Christmas moss (Christmas, Christmas moss, montagnei): content in the aquarium, care, features, reproduction

Christmas Moss (Vesicularia montagnei) – a representative of aquarium algae family Vesikulyariy. One of the first bryophytes, which began to be used in aquarium.

Areal is considered to be the rivers of Brazil and Asian countries. It grows in springs with pure water, which is enriched with oxygen.

Another name for this mocha is Christmas Moss, since the arrangement of the branches forms a Christmas tree. It looks like a javanese bush.

On the central stem a lot of twigs of different lengths. On them are located small round leaves with pointed tips.

The plant has no root system. Christmas clings to the walls of the tank or decorations using rhizoids.

Plant height does not exceed 10 centimeters. In addition to decorative qualities, serves as a shelter for fish and other inhabitants of the aquarium.

  • Christmas moss grows in the temperature range from 20 to 25 degrees. Negatively reacts to regime change. With a sharp decrease in temperature, the bush slows down in growth, the leaves become dull green.
  • When the content in the aquarium acidity and water hardness do not play a role, but it is recommended to adhere to average values.
  • The lighting level is adjusted from the preferences of the fish in the tanks. For moss, these figures are not important. With an increased level of illumination, thickets become thicker, in darkened areas – healthy growth. With thick growth you need to resort to trimming – trim the tips of the twigs.
  • Clean water affects the health of the bush. In a dirty tank, growth slows down. After a time, the plant dies. To maintain health, vesicularisation requires the installation of compressors. The uneaten remnants of food and feces of inhabitants settle on the leaves of the plant. Siphon algae is required once a week.

The dwarf shrimp uses moss for shelter and helps cleanse:

  • twigs, eating settled food particles;
  • leaflets on which there is a lot of ciliates.
  • It is necessary to regulate the number of shrimp. With a lack of food, they begin to eat moss leaves.

To protect the newborn fish, they are placed in an aquarium with algae, because they lay eggs in the overgrown plants.

It is not recommended to place Siamese algae-eater in the Christmas moss tank. He will destroy the plant in a few hours.

Fast-growing algae infect moss, as it slowly consumes organic matter.

To increase the growth of christmas moss, you need to supply carbon dioxide to the tank. This procedure is optional and is performed at the request of the aquarist. With an additional supply of CO2 you need to increase the level of lighting.

Thick thickets form a shade, and the lower part of the moss begins to rot.

Reproduction occurs as in many algae – the division of the twigs. The cut part of the plant is placed in a new place.

The moss of Christmas is actively used for decorating objects of the landscape of reservoirs: for decorating the walls of the aquarium, stones and snags.

It is required to firmly secure the vesicular with a thread or a fishing line to the decoration element. After a few weeks, the plant will take root and begin to wrap around the entire surface.

Used as flooring. Over time, vesicularis grows over the entire bottom area, forming a vegetative carpet.

It is required to regularly maintain cleanliness and monitor the growth of algae.

And also the rear wall of the aquarium is made.

  • First you need to prepare a piece of plastic or iron mesh.
  • Moss is attached to it with a thread.
  • The network is installed in the aquarium.
  • The vesicularia eventually grows and forms a green wall.
