Chlamydomonad green alga: habitats and feeding method

Aquarium with fish perfectly fit into any interior. But besides the fish, various ornaments and algae are placed inside. In most cases, algae are safe for the inhabitants of the aquarium, but there are exceptions.

Chlamydomonas (chlamydomonas) – unicellular green alga. In the aquarium can get accidentally with dirty soil or food. It can be dangerous for fish, and getting rid of such a “neighbor” is not easy.

Dangerous neighbor for domestic fish is simply indispensable in wildlife.

Chlamydomonas – unicellular algae, can be dangerous for aquarium fish

Algae tenacious, and habitat for it does not matter. The answer to the question of where Chlamydomonas live is simple. It can be found as well as in warm marshes, and in cold pools.

For her only sea salt water is uncomfortable, but even in such conditions it sometimes survives.

Alga has different species. One of which can live under the ice or in the thick of snow.

During flowering, chlamydomonad colors its habitat in different colors. Ice and snow in places of their life can be of yellow, red, green or black shade.

Inside the cell there is a section in which the single-cell chlamydomonad stores spare nutrients. The cell stores protein.

The alga has a red eye. It responds to lighting, helps to determine which side the light source is located.

Chlamydomonad moves in that direction. There are vacuoles next to the eye, they secrete cell waste products.

Chlamydomonad – algae with a mixed diet. It is capable of photosynthesis, like grass or trees, and it can also feed on organic matter.

The way of organic nutrition occurs after sunset, when photosynthesis is impossible.

Reproduction occurs in two ways:

  1. Asexual flagellated reproduction. The nucleus of the cell is divided, forming other cells. This type of breeding is simple and fast. A day later, the “new” cells themselves are ready for reproduction.
  2. Sexual reproduction. Chlamydomonas “fuse” in pairs and are at rest for some time. Some chlamydomonad emit male and female species.

In the study of algae, the question arises, chlamydomonas is a plant or animal; it is not easy to answer it. It does not fully apply to either one or the other.

It can feed and reproduce like living organisms, but at the same time it produces photosynthesis like a plant.

Scientists attributed it to the plants, but disputes about it do not subside even now.

Everyone knows the concept “Water bloom”. So it looks Chlamydomonas, small algae rise from the bottom and tighten the surface of reservoirs.

In this way they purify water, eat dirt and waste left by man.

When everything is eaten, the water is purified, and single-celled return to the bottom to wait for food. Scientists also grow them in artificial conditions and add them to dirty water bodies.

Chlamydomonad is used to study genetics. Despite its simple appearance, the alga has a complex structure.

To keep fish is a lot of work. Such a “resident” gets into the home aquarium under different conditions. Main reasons:

  1. Insufficient care, lack of water filters. The soil in the aquarium should be of good quality, the water filter is required. Aquarium should be regularly cleaned from the life of fish.
  2. The aquarium gets direct sunlight. The aquarium should not stand on the window or near batteries and radiators.

Chlamydomonas can get into the aquarium due to inadequate care.

  • Rare water change. A complete water change should be carried out at least once every few months. Replacing 10% of the total water every other week. Water for the shift should be at least two days.
  • The decoration in the aquarium was not processed and washed in when placed in water. All items before being placed in the aquarium should be washed with running water. It is impossible to install “alien” decorations from other aquariums.
  • When other fish are moved into the aquarium, it is necessary to maintain quarantine for 7 days. Regularly inspect new fish and watch for their behavior.
  • Green algae multiply quickly when released into the aquarium. They spoil the appearance of water, leaving an unpleasant residue on the walls of the aquarium.

If algae are found, it is necessary to immediately remove them with a net and add hydrogen peroxide to the aquarium. But this does not always help, the most effective way – completely change the water.

Useful in nature, chlamydomonas at home can be harmful. It is better to prevent its occurrence than to suffer from its removal.
