Brown algae in the aquarium: the fight with brown plants

The appearance of brown algae in an aquarium is a disturbing signal that the ecosystem of a small reservoir is disturbed, and ornamental plants are in danger. The reasons may be different.

Urgent measures are needed to combat the actively developing lower representatives of the plant world.

The appearance of brown algae indicates insufficient lighting and low water temperature in the aquarium

In the aquarium, various living organisms coexist: plants, fish, algae, mollusks, bacteria and fungi. Not all of them are visible to the human eye, but at mutual equilibrium they bring certain benefits in cleaning the aquatic environment from organic matter and poisons.

Algae, unlike aquarium, belong to the lower aquatic plants. The presence of pigments gives them a variety of colors: purple, green, pink, blue, orange, red, brown. And in appearance, they may resemble moss, fluffy bunches, mud, slime.

Algae can be seen in any natural and domestic pond. Light, water and food are necessary for their vital activity, and all these elements are present in the aquarium. Here you can often encounter these types of lower:

  • Euglena green – water bloom;
  • xenokokus – scurf of green color on stones and glasses;
  • blue-green algae – colonies of bacteria rare in domestic water bodies;
  • filamentous – Kladofa, edogonium, spirogyra, rhizoclonium;
  • black beard – refers to malicious red algae;
  • Vietnamese or antler;
  • diatoms.

These types of algae appear in the aquarium for various reasons, and the methods of controlling them differ.

Brown algae (diatoms), which are found most often and are quite harmless, also belong to microscopic living organisms. Like all protozoa, they multiply cell division.

Very fond of shaded places in the aquarium and the abundance of organic matter. There are 25 thousand species of diatoms.

In the conditions of domestic water bodies, such representatives of diatoms as pinnilaria, cymbel, and navicula are common. They look different, and the reasons for their appearance and methods of dealing with them are common.

When creating favorable conditions, when the balance of light, organic matter and carbon dioxide is disturbed, brown algae begin to grow rapidly, sometimes forming whole colonies, and displace aquarium plants, disrupting their photosynthesis. For fish, brown and other types of protozoa are not dangerous, but they spoil the appearance of the reservoir. It seems that the aquarium is sprinkled with brown, dark green and brown sand.

The solid outer shell of these single-cells is explained by the high content of silicon oxide.

The formation of a brownish dust-like deposit on glass, stones, soil, leaves is the first characteristic sign of the appearance of brown algae. The layers of plaque are rapidly growing and becoming darker.

Fish, snails, mollusks and all other living organisms living in the aquarium are also deposited in the separated water for several days.

Observe the proper maintenance regime so that the brown algae does not appear in the aquarium. Fighting them will bring a lot of trouble. There are a few simple rules for caring for a domestic pond:

  1. Take care of sufficient lighting. For additional lighting devices are suitable lamps with red spectral light.
  2. Change water more often using only purified water.
  3. The water temperature in the aquarium should be within * 22−28 *.
  4. Install special filters to absorb silicates that promote the reproduction of diatoms.
