The appearance of the aquarium is largely determined by the correct selection of the plant world. It is precisely how they are combined in color, whether light does not overlap each other, whether nutrients do not interfere with the roots, not only aesthetic perfection, but also the prosperous coexistence of all its inhabitants depends. Brazilian Lileupsis – perfect neighborhood for any company of plants.
This, similar to ordinary grass, the aquarium ground cover plant belongs to the umbrella family and can be represented by nine species.
Living in nature in wetlands, the plant has adapted to grow in home aquariums. Here it looks like a soft fluffy rug, which fits tightly the territory of its habitat and makes it cozy, affectionate and well-groomed.
This is an underwater semblance of a neat lawn, recently trimmed and carefully protected from damage (numerous photos are available on specialized sites).
This appearance is provided by the features of the morphological structure of the Brazilian lyleopsis (lilaeopsis brasiliensis). It has a long stem that grows horizontally and partially hides in the ground.
On the stem, at a certain distance from each other there are nodules that give rise to clusters of lanceolate leaflets. The leaves are so perfectly adjacent to the stem that the transition is almost invisible and it looks like the grass is growing directly from the ground.
The brightness of the green color is complemented by the glossy shiny surface of the leaves, while the whitish roots go deep into the ground and become completely invisible.
Such an appearance does not make the plant attractive neither to fish, nor to snails, nor to other inhabitants. Therefore, its growth does not interfere, except that the parameters of water that it is desirable to maintain at a certain level.
Paludarium – the best way to decorate the room with lyleopsis
Recently, the paludariums have become a fashionable innovation to the culture of decorating residential premises. This is the so-called water garden.
It is a closed system in which all the conditions for its independent existence are created. This kind of florariums, successfully combining the natural energy of water and the bright life-affirming power of a living plant, are useful for the ecological balance in the room and give it a special charm.
Often palyudariums are used for growing meristem plants – those obtained by microcloning, practically in laboratory conditions.
For lyaleopsis paludarium is the best option for life. In such conditions, it quickly and densely grows, gaining strength, covers with its external softness quite large areas of soil.
What is it for in the apartment? In some cases, this is the habitat of exotic animals, in others – just an original decoration or design element.
And in this and in another case, Lileopsis for him is the best option.
For the growth of lyleopsis optimal conditions for the content are:
- water temperature in the range of 20-26 ° C
- neutral or slightly alkaline environment
- hardness from 5 to 15 dGh.
Being loyal to a fairly wide range of water temperatures, the plant does not like its abrupt changes. For him, it looks like stress, so the growth of the leaves stops.
According to the assessment and description of aquarists, the plant is hardy. It can grow safely even in salted water.
However, in general, the chemical composition of water is sensitive. For example, the lack of iron will lead to the yellowing of its leaves.
There are cases when the plant acquires a brown color. This is a signal of the need to feed it.
The best option is liquid fertilizer, based on magnesium, calcium, iron, manganese. Use should be as recommended by the manufacturer.
Sand or fine gravel is suitable as a soil.
Brazilian Lileupsis (lilaeopsis brasiliensis)
The light level must be selected individually. According to published data, a level of 0.5 watts / l will be quite enough for a low and dense mat to cover the allocated space and look neat.
If the illumination does not reach this criterion, then the appearance of the grass can change not for the better: its leaves will stretch upwards, towards the light, become large and turn brown.
If you provide the necessary level of illumination at least 10-12 hours a day, you can quickly get the bright emerald color of this aquatic plant.
But for New Zealand’s lileopsis, the light level is needed a little higher (at least 0.6-0.8 watts / l.)
With such a simple care, there is one caveat: it is imperative to remove obsolete leaves. A presentable appearance can be provided by regularly cutting off old yellowing elements, thinning thickets and removing those shoots that are knocked out of the total mass.
If you like this plant, you need to take care of saturation of water with carbon dioxide. The minimum allowable amount is in the range of 5-10 mg / l, however, the plant will be grateful for a concentration of 10 to 20 mg.
Growing grass under optimal conditions will be quick and intense. Given this, plant bushes should be at a certain distance from each other (1-2cm).
Within a month, the whole area allocated for this grass will have a decorated appearance. But you should not relax.
Brazilian Lileupsis do not like thick vegetation. It is better to thin out its leaves (at least once every three months), although due to entangled roots it is not easy to do this.
If it is necessary to engage in artificial reproduction of a plant, then you can simply pinch off a small bush from the existing thickets and plant it in a new soil with a height of no more than 2-3 cm. It is better if it is gravel. Need to quickly create a natural green cover?
There should be several bundles and it is advisable to plant them close to each other.
The Brazilian lyleopsis has a “stepbrother”. This is Lilaeopsis Mauritius.
In nature, it grows on the islands of Mauritius and was first discovered in the early 1990s. It is very similar to the lileopsis from Brazil, but requires a much lower level of illumination.
That is why it is attractive to aquarium designers. Often you can find simultaneous growth of both plants.
However, lilaeopsis is often planted in a pot, which is equipped with a special weight for stability.
