Why do Guppy aquarium fish swim on the surface?
Sometimes lovers of guppies notice that their fish have changed behavior, and they constantly swim on the surface. What to do in this case, and with what it can be connected?
Before taking any action, you need to know that guppies are fish that live in the upper layers of water, so if they hover around the surface sometimes, then there is nothing wrong with such actions. But you should pay attention if guppies are near the surface constantly.
There may be several reasons: lack of oxygen, poor water quality and various fish diseases.
This is the most common reason why guppies tend to the surface of the water. If there is not enough oxygen, not only fish will feel discomfort, but also plants – they begin to wither and die.
Why do guppies float on the surface, even if aeration is turned on? Perhaps its level is insufficient to provide all the fish with oxygen.
In addition, it must be remembered that the higher the temperature – the stronger should be aeration.
If the oxygen level is normal, the water is qualitative and not stagnant, filters and aerators are installed, and guppy aquarium fish still float on the surface, then the cause of this behavior is a disease that is not so easy to determine. According to experts, the “symptom of suffocation” characterizes many protozoal, bacterial and helminth diseases.
If only a part of the fish has surfaced, they should be urgently planted from the others, and then treated.
If all guppies behave this way, then it is necessary to treat all with antibiotics and aprotozoal preparations. Digran is added to the aquarium at the rate of ½ tablet per 100 liters, and Antipar – 1 ml per 40 liters.
These procedures are carried out for about 2 weeks, then change ½ the volume of the aquarium and take the dosage of drugs in 2 times less. If the treatment is successful, then gradually the drug must be removed from the water, changing it periodically.
Thus, if you noticed that guppies began to constantly stay on the surface, first check the oxygen level and the condition of the water, and only then proceed to the treatment of individuals.
- Water of inadequate quality (dirty, turbid, toxic). The likely cause of death is poisoning with nitrogenous compounds that are formed after the collapse of fish waste. Improper water purification leads to the fact that nitrites, nitrates and ammonium as toxic substances quickly spread in the water. The correct nitrogenous cycle is a guarantee of the health of all pets. But if the water is poisoned by nitrogenous compounds, it becomes turbid, the smell of rot will appear. The dissolved ammonia can be in a reservoir in high doses at a pH level of 7.5 and above. At lower pH levels, ammonium is not so toxic, but it can harm small fish. Fish die from poisoning with this substance.
Wrong conditions of the settlement of fish, too fast adaptation. Water in a pet store and in a home tank can vary in many ways. If the fish instantly settle into the water of a different pH level, hardness, temperature, with a difference of one unit and more, then they die within 24 hours or one week.
It is advisable to take water from the store aquarium in a portable package, and pour it into a separate container. It is necessary to add water from the main reservoir in portions, not more than 5% of the total volume, at intervals of 10 minutes.
Fish can be transplanted into the aquarium after the part of the aquarium water in the tank becomes higher than 60-75% of the total volume.

Gas embolism is a disease that can lead to the sudden death of a fish. On the eyes, the body can be seen capillaries, the body turns red, the fish swims from corner to corner, the body is covered with air bubbles, the scales are tousled.
The disease is the result of a sharp replacement of water (more than 50%), or the settlement of the pet in the water, recruited directly from the tap.
What to do if you find a dead fish in the walls of the aquarium?
- Look at the number of fish in the tank. Recount them in the morning and in the hours of feeding. What is their condition, do they take food well? Are there fish that refuse food? Is it possible bloating in one of the fish? If you have not found any fish, check all the corners in the aquarium by lifting the lid. Inspect the plants, caverns and all the scenery. If after a few days the dead fish did not float to the surface, it may have suffered from a neighbor in the aquarium, and you can hardly find it. Sometimes the fish fall into an unprotected filter, and die there. In any case, keep searching until you find the visible reasons for the disappearance.
Check the water parameters. Water is often the main cause of poor health. Take tests with indicators, and make the necessary measurements.
The increased content of ammonia and nitrates in water, heavy metals leads to the fact that pets die quickly. If the aquarium has a decorative element made of iron, zinc, copper – this is another pointer.
Some fish do not tolerate metal, and suddenly die.
Watch a video on why water tests are needed and how to use them.
After the test results, draw conclusions. The test will show two results – either you have everything in order in the aquarium, or the water is dirty and there is an overabundance of toxic substances in it. In the second case, you need to enable powerful filtering, and make a replacement of 25% of the aquarium water for clean and infused.
Dramatically change the parameters of the water is not necessary, it can harm living fish.
For some species of fish, lying on the bottom is a natural behavior. If a speckled catfish lives in your aquarium, or another type of corridor, you will notice how it floats in the bottom layer of the reservoir. It’s not scary, just all the corridors, and catfish, too, live only in the lower layers of water.
As natural cleaners, they take uneaten food from the ground, scraping algae that have accumulated on its surface from the bottom.
Other species of fish also swim in the lower layers of the water – these are neons. As representatives of the Kharacin family, they are distinguished by their small size and sensitive body, which will irreversibly suffer with any damage.
The safest place for them is the bottom of the tank, where they will be comfortable and safe.
Look at the unusual behavior of the surgeon’s fish.
You can see how the fish of the family of Viunovye and Tsikhlida often spend time at the bottom of the reservoir. As you know, they love to dig in the ground and dig water plants. For them, there are other types of “entertainment”, but they are accustomed to this way of life.
There are no signs of illness here, they are simply looking for something, perhaps food, or cleaning the body of accumulated mucus. For loaches, it is important to free the scales from mucus, wallowing in stones or gravel — otherwise, one cannot avoid inflammation of the skin.
Many fish swim at night at the bottom of the aquarium. Why is this happening? Everything is simple – this is normal.
Like many living creatures, fish prefer to sleep at night, although there are exceptions. They slowly drift in the bottom layers of the water, often with open eyes.
And if they swim to the surface, then some pets can even be stroked.
Natural behavior – to be in the bottom water layers, when the fish recently settled in the general aquarium. For her, this is a new, unknown world that hides a potential danger. The adaptation process takes place in a secluded place where it is likely not to be noticed.
This behavior is typical if you have settled goldfish, tsikhlidki, kartozubye or labyrinth.
