Tsikhlasoma labiatum: tips on content, photos and breeding

Hello dear friends! Cykhlazoma The Labiatum is an aquarium fish belonging to the tsikhlovy family. Homeland habitats of this species are the lakes of the two Central American countries Managua and Nicaragua.

Gubasty tsikhlazoma has in its arsenal a whole set of various colors: yellow, red, pinkish and brown-gray tint. In fish, sex differences are quite clearly expressed. Males have a more prominent forehead, the anal and dorsal fins are elongated, the body is slightly larger than that of the female.

Under natural conditions, the fish grows up to 25 centimeters, but in aquariums their size does not exceed 20 centimeters.

In tsikhlazomy labiatum rather aggressive. The fish is very territorial, as well as its relatives in the family, so it is very important for them to have their own territory.

To keep a pair of adult fish will need a bank with a capacity of 200 liters. If the aquarium is even larger than this, then this tsikhlasom will be able to get along in the same container with other large representatives of tsikhlovyh (managua, salvini, fest and eliot).

When you will equip housing for your pets, remember that blasted tsikhlazomy love to uproot aquarium plants, so I would advise you to give up on them.

In addition to the aquarium soil, in the aquarium with tsikhlovyh must be present grottoes, caves and ceramic tubes. The water in the aquarium must meet the following requirements:

  • acidity: 6.0 – 8.0 pH;
  • hardness: 15-25 degrees;
  • water temperature: from 20 to 30 degrees (24-26 is more preferable);
  • high-quality filtration, aeration and regular changes.

In nature, labiatums usually feed on small fish, insects and various larvae as well as crustaceans. In aquarium conditions it is very important to provide the fish with a varied diet, which should include live and frozen food, shrimps, dry food pellets and food of plant origin.

The intensity of the color of red fish mainly depends on the presence of astaxandins in the diet. It is found in sweet varieties of paprika and artemia, as well as in the specialized feed “Red Parrot” and “Astacolor”.

Tsichlazoma labiatum becomes mature at the age of one. To stimulate spawning, it is necessary to replace ¼ of the water in the aquarium and raise the temperature by a few degrees. The water in the spawning tank should meet the following requirements:

  • hardness: 10-30 degrees;
  • acidity: pH 7.0 – 8.0;
  • water temperature: 26 – 28 degrees.

A male, before throwing female calves, carefully prepares the surface of a pot or a flat stone. The number of eggs in the litter depends on the age of the female, the conditions of the parents and her size.

Like the other Cichlians, the spongy tsikhlazomy carefully takes care of its offspring. The incubation period of the eggs may vary from 3 to 5 days, and at the end of 5-6 days, the fry already swim and feed on their own. Starter feed for fry need this: Nauplii Cyclops, Artemia and diaptomus.

If in the aquarium conditions you try to cross a spongy tsikhlazoy with citron, you can get a hybrid offspring.
