Tsichlazoma tetrakantum: content, photo and reproduction

Dear colleagues. I apologize for not having contacted us for five days, now it is a season of conservation and rest on the lake shore.

Therefore, I decided to organize a few days off and relax. And we will talk today about the next representative of the Tsikhlovykh – tsikhlazom tetrakantum.

In nature, this fish lives in freshwater and brackish waters of Barbados and Cuba.

The tsykhlazoma tetrakantum has a flattened body and slightly elongated in length. The head is large, big eyes and thick lips.

The dorsal fin originates from the head itself and runs along the entire length of the body of the fish, down to the tail. After a certain period of time, the color of the cychlosome changes. The main color is gray-green and sometimes with a yellowish sheen.

Throughout the body, one can observe a scattering of various spots and strokes, which create uncomplicated zigzags around the head of the fish. The end of the dorsal and anal fins in males has a pointed shape. When a male reaches puberty, a hump grows on his forehead.

During spawning in males you can see the seed line. In females during spawning, a truncated large organ appears, with which the fish spawn.

In aquarium conditions, the size of the cychlasma does not exceed 20 centimeters in length.

The Tikhrazyom Tetrakantum, like its other relatives in the family, is famous for its aggressive temperament, which is clearly visible both in the flock and in other aquarium inhabitants belonging to other species and families. Therefore, for the fish is very important to provide enough personal space. If you want to keep this aquatic animal in your home aquarium, you will have to buy a small flock, because couples form in cichlids very early.

If a fish is suddenly left without a pair, it must be removed in another container.

Tsikhlasoma prefers to stay in the lower and middle layers of the water column. At the bottom you need to install a sufficient number of various shelters of snags, stones and ceramic pots.

To distribute the territory between several pairs, you will have to put several large stones upright. In the designated areas also need to build several caves so that the fish could hide in them.

The activity of the fish manifests after dusk. Floating plants (pistes, riches, naiad) are welcomed in the aquarium with tsikhlazomy. The water in the aquarium must meet the following requirements:

  • water hardness up to 45 °;
  • active reaction environment: 5.7-8.5 pH;
  • water temperature: 25-30 degrees.

Cichlasoma tetrakantum feeds on various feeds of animal and vegetable origin.

Spawning fish can be both in the general and spawning aquarium, in which aquarium soil must necessarily be present. To stimulate spawning, the aquarist needs to change every week to two volumes and raise the temperature of the content by a couple of degrees.

There were cases when couples were created at an already mature age. However, until the fish get used to each other, the aquarium should be divided into two parts with glass.

But it was noted that such a method does not always bear fruit.

Spawning occurs on a large flat stone or in a spacious cave. The incubation period of eggs can last up to 6 days, at the end of which, parents transfer their offspring to small, previously prepared indentations in the substrate.

After a few days, the fry can swim and eat on their own. Both parents take care of the offspring.

Starter feed for fry – live dust, nematodes and cyclop nauplii.
