Triton in a fish tank

maintenance, care, compatibility

These handsome men should live in a cozy home filled with fresh water with plants, on the surface of the reservoir should be dry land. Since tritons are amphibians, sometimes they need to come to the surface, breathing in atmospheric air.

Content is acceptable in a water tank or aquaterrarium, resembling a natural biotope.

Look at the alpine tritons close up.

Aquaterrarium can be made by yourself with the help of decorations sold in pet shops. It turns out to build hands land, small floating islands. Also do not forget about snags, embankments, stones, rafts.

Not all cold-blooded people often appear on land, but it must be present. Sooner or later the amphibian will come out to get some air.

Newts – crawling animals to protect themselves from their sudden disappearance from the nursery, cover it with a lid.

Content is permissible with other fish, but often this is problematic, not all fish are ready to live in cool water. Sometimes amphibians are settled with snails, but there have been cases when these animals clashed and injured each other — snails seized newts into the shell, while people did not help the animals to free themselves from each other.

Acceptable water temperature for amphibians – no more than 22 degrees. Small fish such as danios, guppies, cardinals and neons can adapt to water with a low temperature range.

Only here small fish will be eaten with pleasure, it is better to keep amphibians separately.

There are several requirements that, if you fulfill them, you will protect your newts from diseases, and they will live a long time, delighting you with their amusing behavior and bright exotic coloring:

  1. A terrarium or aquarium may be unheated, but it must have a dry part. Tritons live in water, but sometimes they crawl out onto the land to warm themselves. You can buy either a special aquarium or make a “raft” in the usual way, securing it with a home-made “anchor”. You can also make “Triton Island” of gravel or sand. The volume of the aquarium should be at least 15 liters per triton.
  2. It is possible to contain newts and several individuals, they get along very well with each other. But tritons may not get along with other fish, as few of the fish prefer such a low water temperature (+ 21 ° C and below). Amphibians are cold-blooded and overheating can be fatal. Some aquarists combine newts with guppies, neons and goldfish in the same aquarium. These fish will not harm the tritons, and will stay away from them.
  3. Tritons do little to pollute the water, but it is advisable to have at least one filter in the aquarium, especially if there are plants in it. Water should be used that is settled, but not boiled.
  4. If there are live plants in the aquarium, then the issue of lighting is important. If there are no plants, tritons are not at all demanding of light, lamps can be left out.
  5. Tritons do not touch the greens, but snails can be eaten. Tritons also eat their skin after shedding, making it easier for you to clean the aquarium.
  6. One needs to feed the newts every other day with small fish, bloodworms, earthworms, one can give finely crumbled boiled fish, meat, liver. Once a month it is advisable to arrange a fasting day. It is important to use vitamins and trace elements.
  7. Tritons reproduce very well at home. The female is transplanted to another aquarium with dense vegetation, which will help the little tritonians to hide after birth and survive.
  8. Do not take a pet in his arms. He will not harm you, but you can. The average temperature of a triton is 18 ° С, yours is 36.6 ° С. A triton can burn your hand.
  9. For the winter, newts may lie in hibernation. To do this, they need to create a temperature regime from 0 to 10 ° C, depending on the variety.

The maintenance of aquarium triton will not give you trouble. They are neat and unpretentious.

With good care aquarium newts live up to 27-30 years.

Diseases in aquarium tritons are the same as in aquarium fish. Before you begin treatment, you need to correctly diagnose a newly infected triton.

An infection in the aquarium can get on the leaves of plants, on decorative elements, with food, the disease can occur from a temperature drop or poor-quality water. In any case, it is better to invite a specialist to the house so that he can examine your newts, make the correct diagnosis and prescribe treatment.

Often, newts have oncological diseases that are surgically treated.

Having settled in your newt aquarium, you will become the owner of a good-natured cute dragon.

Red-bellied newts, unlike many other amphibians, are considered to be purely aquarium animals. This means that the aquaterrarium equipment with a full-fledged land area is not mandatory for them, it is enough to have a small cork or foam island in the aquarium, some of which will be flooded so that animals can get to it.

Instead of an island, you can put a moss overgrown with moss or anubias, which will protrude from the water – it will additionally serve as a decoration.

A pair of tritons will require an aquarium of 15–20 liters, always with a tight-fitting lid, as they easily climb along the vertical glass walls and often run off, crawling into the smallest gaps, for example, into the holes for wires and hoses.

The water is poured to a level of about 20 cm. It is very good if there are live plants in the aquarium, better hard-leaved or forming large floating leaves.

Small shelters are equipped.

Some authors indicate that a UV lamp and a light day are needed for about 10 hours for tritons, according to other sources, they do not need light, and the lamp is installed only if there are living plants in the aquarium. I have a part of newts living with light, and a part – without it, no difference in their state of health is noticeable.

One of the main and difficult conditions for the maintenance of newts is water temperature. It should be low enough, ideally 20-22 ° C, maximum 25 ° C.

At higher temperatures, animals increase their risk of disease and shorten their lifespan.

If there is no special cooling system in the aquarium, and there is no air conditioning in the room, then it is easiest to cool the water in a hot season using a computer cooler or bottles and ice packs from the freezer. The main thing is that the temperature change was not abrupt.

The rest of the newts of this species are undemanding. They are capable of dwelling in water with different physicochemical characteristics (sensitive only to chlorine, so water must be defended for at least 24 hours and it is advisable to use dechloroators), they easily tolerate temporary organic pollution.

Being animals intelligent and not particularly voracious, they themselves pollute the water a little, so in the aquarium there is a rather small filter without aeration.

Oxygen dissolved in water is not needed by tritons, they float to the surface for air. The water flow regulator from the filter should be set to a minimum, because newts do not like a strong flow.

Siphon bottom and water changes in the aquarium should be carried out once a week or two.

Compatibility versus other aquarium animals

After wintering, the temperature in the aquarium is raised to 24 ° C, aeration is switched on, and the tritons proceed to reproduction. Their fertilization is internal: the male lays the spermatophore, which the female pulls in with his cloaca, and then, after 2-3 days, heats out up to 300 eggs, attaching them to the plants.

If there are no live plants in the aquarium with tritons, small strips of polyethylene can be placed there as a substrate for caviar.

Laying must be removed to another aquarium or to set up adult newts, otherwise they may eat eggs or larvae. After a day or two, they remove the dead eggs, leaving only those eggs that remained transparent, and the embryos into them from balls turned into comma-like ones.

Some time after laying eggs, tritons usually shed and eat their old skin, and then often enter the next land phase.

Larvae hatch in 2-4 weeks. At first they are very small, resembling thin lines with a prominent head, in the general aquarium with soil and plants they are practically not visible.

Only with anxiety, they fly apart, like specks.

They are fed with live dust – infusoria, rotifers, nauplii of Artemia. If there are few larvae and they live in the main aquarium with a stable biological balance and live plants, there are enough small food organisms there.

It is possible to additionally place several snails ampoules to the larvae, in the mucus of which infusoria are well propagated.

When the larvae are kept in a special nursery aquarium, they are fed several times a day with nauplii of Artemia or specially grown infusoria. As the larvae grow, they transfer to feeding larger animals, best of all with daphnia.

In the future, you can begin to feed them with a cut pipe maker and a small moth, but this must be done carefully, as there is a great danger of introducing parasites or infection with this food.

It is much safer to give babies home-grown daphnia right up to the very metamorphosis, and then try to go straight to feeding on shrimp meat from the tweezers. Ideally, if there is an opportunity to feed tritonchikov worms auloforusom or enkhitreey home breeding, as well as fry of aquarium fish or young freshwater shrimp.

The larvae and juveniles of newts do not require special maintenance, only aeration is required, regular cleaning of the aquarium, the temperature is about 22 ° C.

Because of the branched external gills on the sides of the head and the big mouth, the grown larvae are very funny, they resemble small smiling tailed cheburashek. The color of the babies is usually dark gray or brownish, the belly is paler.

The larvae metamorphosis – the loss of the external gills and the change of the skin structure – occurs gradually between the ages of two and four months, at which time they are 3-4 cm long. The larvae begin to emerge and swallow air from the surface of the water.

At this point, they need to ensure the possibility of access to the land, that is, to place in the aquarium an island on which it would be easy to get out.

Sometimes, after a metamorphosis, young tritons may for several days refuse feed. Further care for them is carried out in the same way as for adults. It will be possible to place them in a common aquarium with their parents as soon as they grow up so that adult newts cannot swallow them.

Young tritons usually enter the aqueous phase 2–3 months after the metamorphosis. Sexual maturity dwarf tritons reach the age of 1-3 years.

Aquarium tritons: maintenance and care :: Triton aquarium species :: Care and education

Aquarium fish and turtles have now become obsolete. Another thing – aquarium tritons.

They can rightly be called quite rare inhabitants of houses and apartments. In nature, they are also quite difficult to meet, since these amphibians are nocturnal.

With proper care, these amphibians can live in captivity (in an aquarium) for up to 30 years. These animals are direct relatives of other amphibians – salamanders and are protected. That is why their content is strictly limited.

Another thing is the ordinary subspecies of these newts (spiny, comb, ordinary, alpine). Their content is not regulated by anything, which allows you to acquire such unusual pets.

At home, you can contain about 10 species of tritons, but the most common are three of them. The first is an ordinary newt.

It usually grows in length up to 9-12 cm. Its olive-brown back and yellowish belly give it a mysterious look. Also, these newts are dotted with a scattering of yellow specks.

The common newt has longitudinal lines on its head. A male on the back (from head to tail) grows a comb.
The next type of aquarium tritons – comb. This amphibian is much larger than its previous relative.

It grows in length up to 18 cm. Comb tritons are painted black or brown.

Their abdomen is orange, there are numerous spots on it. As the name of the species suggests, these creatures also have crests, only they are slightly shorter than those of ordinary newts.

Comb tritons as a defense against enemies use a poisonous substance secreted by skin glands. Therefore, their content requires special care.
And, finally, the third type of aquarium newts is a spiny newt. This creature is considered the largest of the domestic amphibians. In length, it grows to 30 cm.

This newt got its name thanks to the tips of the ribs sticking out on the sides of its abdomen. At rest, they are hidden, but if the needle-like newt starts to get excited, they bloom, forming needles.

These amphibians are colored dark green and have a pale yellow abdomen. Their whole body is littered with black rashes.

It is not entirely true that the content of newts in captivity is troublesome and costly. To properly maintain these amphibians at home, you must have an elementary set of knowledge.

First, we must not forget that amphibians are cold-blooded animals: their body temperature is completely dependent on the surrounding. Therefore, the optimum aquarium temperature for them is from 15 to 20 ° C.

No additional heat sources (UV lamps, incandescent lamps) are needed here.
Secondly, tritons are amphibious animals, i.e. they can live both in water and on land. Therefore, do not forget about equipping the aquarium with an artificial “island” (stones, awnings, rafts).

Of course, there are completely aquatic species of tritons, but they are not popular among aquarists.
Thirdly, aquarium tritons can live both in groups and alone. For them it does not matter.

Of course, the more tritons you plan to start, the greater capacity you need to purchase an aquarium. One triton should have at least 12 liters of water.
Sand or gravel should be used as a primer. In the aquarium, you can place both live and artificial plants. Usually newts do not touch them.

Only during the breeding season, they wrap their caviar in them. Aquarium decorations should not be too expressive, so that the amphibian does not hurt about them.
It is important to know that aquarium tritons feed exclusively on live food: earthworms, small fish, shrimps, larvae, flies, snails. These creatures will not refuse small pieces of meat, kidneys or liver.

Seasoned aquarists are advised to give vitamins to tritons once a month. Young individuals need to be fed every day, and adults – every other day.
You need to know that from time to time aquarium newts shed. Usually before that they rub their heads against the stones.

As soon as their skin breaks, they tighten it and immediately eat it. These amphibians are rather slow creatures. They can spend hours in limbo, clinging to the walls of an aquarium or to plants.

Puberty tritons reach by the 3rd year. At this time, the animal lays its eggs, carefully guarding it.

Fry appear in a month.

Ensuring the existence of a needle-like newt in the home water is not difficult. Several individuals can be identified in one reservoir, so that there are 15-20 liters of water per Pleurodeles waltli.

The latter should be defended in advance for 2-3 days. Further provide the following conditions:

Water environment. To the aquarium water is not muddy, and remained clean, install the filter.

However, aeration of water in domestic water bodies is not envisaged – tritons do not breathe oxygen dissolved in water, they float to this surface.

Tank bottom can be covered with granite chips, be sure to plant any plants for the aquarium. In addition, various shelters of decorative elements, broken pottery shards, and other improvised material are settling at the bottom.

Amphibians are important to have shelters where she will hide from time to time.

Temperature. However, the most important point in the content is to ensure the optimum temperature in the aquarium. Here it is necessary to take into account the fact that a triton is a cold-blooded creature, so the temperature for it is not higher than 15–20 ° C. It is rather difficult to provide such conditions for a high ambient temperature.

For this purpose, cooling installations are used, fans are used, which are located directly above the water surface, and sometimes aquarium water is cooled with the help of bottles with frozen water dipped in a container.
