Three-striped iris or melanotenia – very interesting fish

Hello dear readers! Do you know what fish I dream about? I really like the three-striped iris.

A long time ago, my father kept a small flock of these beautiful fish, but then the aquarium exhausted and nothing was left of it. When I was in Krivoy Rog, I saw a pet store selling red melanotenias.

However, I could not buy them, because I would not bring them to the house, and the price of one fish was substantial – 70 hryvnia.

For the first time melanoteniyu caught Knut Dahl (Norwegian zoologist) in 1895. Nearly thirty years later, Helmar Rendal published a scientific description of this fish caught in the Australian Meri River. Iris lives in the northern regions of Australia.

In the year of my birth (1989) several fish were caught on Melville Island. Under natural conditions, the three-striped iris is included in a large flock together with melanotaenia splendida and melanotaenia nigrans.

The temperature of the water in the reservoirs inhabited by iris irons varies from 24 to 33 degrees Celsius. Basically, the water where they live melanotenii neutral 7.2-8.0 pH.

It has never been observed that the iris lives in reservoirs with a pH below 6.5. In general, melanotenias are kept in flocks near branches hanging above the water or underwater vegetation.

Thus, the fish tries to hide from predators and collects various bugs that fall from the branches into the water.

Three-striped iris is a high-body and rather large aquarium fish. Under natural conditions, it can grow up to 18 centimeters, but in aquarium conditions it rarely exceeds a decimeter in length.

If you, of course, take care that your melanotenias get as much comfort as possible (an aquarium of liters per 100, feeding for slaughter is not a small flow), then the fish will be able to grow up to 15 centimeters.

What I like about this fish is the wide variety of colors and colors. In stores you can find red, yellow, turquoise, gold and many other coloring options.

The elegance and a certain elegance of iridescents are given by a metallic gleam of scales that seems to play in the sun. Fins often have red, yellow and orange colors, and in combination with dark strokes it looks amazing. However, all of the above colors are not clean, for example, red can be fiery, pinkish or scarlet, which makes it even more attractive.

I doubt that you can find a fish with a standard color, as it is not in principle.

Pictures on the body of the iris are directly dependent on the natural conditions where the fish lives. It happens that the appearance of fish in some waters is so changeable that it is necessary to determine the iris to be a subspecies. The literature speaks of several options for coloring, but in nature there are about 40!

If you look closely, you will see three lanes, thanks to which the fish got its name. Sex differences are well marked in adult fish. Men are well-fed, larger and higher than females, and in the spawning period they are much brighter colored.

At the time of spawning during clashes, photographers will be able to make a lot of unique photos.

I would like to talk about the aquarium for iris. A flock of 6 individuals without problems fit and get along in a 100-liter jar. When you choose an aquarium, consider the fact that the fish is quite mobile and very nimble.

Therefore, I recommend to buy you a lengthened aquarium. Such housing is ideal not only for melanotenia, but also for other members of the melanotenia family.

Just do not forget to cover the aquarium cover glass, otherwise nimble guys can jump out of their homes.

The temperature of the water in the aquarium with melanoteniy should be within 24-26 degrees Celsius, so the heater and other equipment for the aquarium is simply vital. In addition, do not be lazy to regularly replace the water every week for fresh with the same parameters as in the aquarium.

To emphasize the beauty of the three-strip iris, it is advisable to buy special lamps at the pet store. When you make out an aquarium, try not to use stones with sharp edges, on which the fish can easily get hurt while driving around the bank.

I do not recommend to place any grottoes and large stones in aquas with melanotenia; with such fish, such decorative elements do not look aesthetically pleasing.

It looks very nice fish in an aquarium with not a large aquarium soil of a dark color and thick planting vegetation. If you worry that the iris will close the grass like Sumatran barbs, then I dare to calm you down – they don’t touch the plants.

Unless they can accidentally damage a tender small-leaved plant, for example, an ambulium or a cabomba, when they rush through the aquarium one after the other. As neighbors you can choose both cichlids and harats, for example, ternsii.

About blue neons with iris immediately I want to say that the blue beauties will go in the form of food as soon as the melanotene grows up.

Three-striped iris omnivorous fish, but in natural conditions, it prefers the larvae, small insects, seeds and algae. In aquarium conditions, it can be fed with a pipe maker, bloodworm, cortex and seafood. Do not forget also periodically to feed their pets feed of plant origin.

The tastier and more abundant you feed melanotenia, the faster they grow and reach puberty. The fish becomes sexually mature by 6 months of life, but the process of maturation can take up to a year.

Everything depends, again, only on the quality of the conditions of detention.

In order to stimulate the fish to spawn, you need to recreate the Australian spring in the aquarium, that is, often replace the water with fresh and that it was warmer a couple of degrees in the general aquarium. Before spawning, selected individuals are heavily fed, greater emphasis is placed on animal feed.

After such care for producers, healthy individuals need to be deposited in a spawning aquarium. Instead of soil, small-leaved plants are laid on the bottom, Javanese moss is ideal. Be sure to install a filter and aerator in the spawning tank.

Then you will need to raise the temperature of the water in relation to the general aquarium by several degrees.

As a rule, spawning in melanotenia lasts from one month to two, during which the male actively cares for the female. For one litter the female can give up to two hundred transparent eggs, and for all spawning up to a thousand. The substrate for spawning is removed from the spawning aquarium and placed in another container, where the eggs will ripen further.

If the female started throwing fewer eggs in one set, then the future mom is just tired and she should be placed in a common aquarium for the rest. Rest can last about two to three weeks, during which manufacturers are restored and prepared for a new approach.

Incubation of caviar lasts a week. Small things that are about to hatched are not difficult to feed. From the first days of life, fry of melanotenia can eat Nauplii Artemia.

As you grow older, you can enter larger feeds in the form of a cyclop or squid fillet. These two products will enhance the color of the young fish.
