The maintenance, care and breeding of aquarium fish lalius

Fans of aquarism are certainly familiar with a small, but nevertheless very beautiful fish called Lyalius. This species is especially popular with beginner aquarium owners.

Well-known this small fish was made of its elegant coloring, unpretentiousness in leaving and non-aggressive temper.

Lyalius – fish small sizes, belonging to the suborder labyrinth fish. Under natural conditions common in rivers of India.

It prefers soft, well warmed by the sun water and dense thickets of aquatic plants, in which it hides from enemies. The aquarium variety, the lyalius fish, acquired wide popularity in 1903, when its wholesale deliveries to the European market were carried out.

The sizes of these animals range from 5 to 6 cm. The body is streamlined, oval in shape, flattened laterally. Males are larger than females and have a brighter color.

The ends of the fins in males are pointed, whereas in females the fins are rounded. Lyalius reach sexual maturity at the age of 4-5 months.

For breeding, the pair is isolated in separate vessels with a volume of at least 6 liters. The male builds a foam nest on the surface of the water, where he collects eggs after spawning.

Female lyaliusa is very prolific, it lays up to 600 eggs, after which it is deposited, and the male looks after the roe.

Lyalius, being one of the most popular aquarium fish, in natural conditions has only one color. At the same time, there are many varieties of Lalius, bred by breeding. The most popular of them are the following types:

  • Rainbow. This species has a bright striped pattern with green, red and blue lines located across the body of the fish and setting on the fins. Lyalius iridescent is a selection form.
  • Blue. Artificially derived species with a uniform blue body color with a slight intersperse of red dots and a bright sheen of scales.
  • Red. This species is obtained by fixing the mutation. Lyalius red has a bright neon color and a blue border on the dorsal fin.
  • Cobalt This species is painted in a thick cobalt blue shade, giving a metallic sheen. From different angles of view, the color of scales varies from light blue to dark.

In all varieties of lalius, males are most brightly colored, while females have a rather faded shade, similar to the original natural color of the fish.

Compatibility of lyalius in an aquarium with other fish is quite good, provided that they are placed with medium-sized peaceful species, otherwise lyalius may suffer. In order for these fish to feel comfortable in the home water reservoir, they need the following conditions:

  • The aquarium should be quite spacious. For several individuals suitable capacity of 40-50 liters.
  • These animals prefer thick underwater plantations, as well as algae on the surface of the water, under which the fish will easily hide.
  • The water temperature should be close to the air temperature and be between 23 and 28 degrees.
  • Filtration of water is obligatory, it must be arranged in such a way that there are no strong currents in which the fish feel uncomfortable.
  • These fish prefer bright aquarium lighting.

In a small pond, it is better to keep one male and several females, since males of this species can fight each other. If the aquarium is large enough and densely planted with underwater plants, it can contain several males at a time.

This species of fish belongs to omnivorous species. It is recommended to feed lyalius with dry, frozen or live food.

These fish pick up food on the surface, so dry flakes can become the basis of their diet. Food should be given with caution and only in such quantity that the fish eat without residue.

If the food is not eaten completely, its particles rot, which leads to the deterioration of water in the aquarium and the development of pathogens, which can later harm the fish. Feed such as daphnia, small crustaceans, gammarus can be given as an addition to the basic diet.

It must be remembered that these fish are prone to overeating, so you need to carefully monitor the amount of food they consume and arrange a fasting day for the fish once a week.

The amount of feed per feed can be determined empirically by asking the food in small portions. The frequency of meals depends on the age of the fish, as the fry need more frequent feeding than the grown-up individuals.

Adult fish is enough to feed 1-2 times a day.

Before you buy a fish in a pet store or on the market, you need to watch it a little and evaluate its appearance and agility. Healthy individuals are quite active and have a bright color and shiny, tight to the body scales.

It must be remembered that the main protection of fish against disease is their prevention.
