In flowing rivers and streams of Southeast and Central Asia, there is an exquisite Mastatzambel fish. Opened in 1800, fish are now easier to find in aquariums than in their natural environment. The species began to disappear, as it is caught for gastronomic purposes and exported in large quantities.
It is believed that due to the large size and unique nature of the content of valve at home is troublesome. But because of its unusualness and beauty, mashast-cum-colored armpits are very popular.
Aquarists like to keep it in aquariums around the world.
Because of its unusualness and beauty, mastacembel armatus is very popular.
Mastamembel armatus (Mastacembelus armatus) looks like an eel, one of its names is Asian eel. But he is not true eel.
The internal structure of mastacembela is similar to perciformes. There are also obvious external differences, for example, the nose in the form of a proboscis, large eyes, the shape of the mouth and its location in the lower part of the head.
These fishes – representatives of the family Mastacembelidae – are probobyl. The habitat is not only Asia, they are also found in East Africa (mainly in Lake Tanganyika).
Mastamblembels have a serpentine body up to 52 cm long. In natural conditions, their sizes can reach 90 cm.
On the sides, the body is slightly flattened. The oblong muzzle ends with a fleshy tactile proboscis. With it, fish grope food at the bottom.
The scales are small and delicate, therefore, for additional protection, the body of the mastembells is covered with a mucous toxic secret. Lower fins absent.
The extended dorsal and anal fins are connected to the caudal fin.

The low dorsal fin, starting at the head and turning into the caudal region, is covered with thorny spines. This feature has given mastacembelam another name – spiny eel.
The injection of thorns to a person is harmless, but fish mucus, once in the wound from the injection, can cause inflammation.
Hands need to be washed and sanitized with chlorhexidine or alcohol. Zelenka or iodine is better not to use, they paint the skin, so you can not notice the first sign of inflammation – redness.
It is advisable to take a drug for allergies, for example, suprastin, tavegil, claritin.
The body of prickly eel is dark brown, with a lighter shade on the belly. Two thirds of the body is covered with dark or black spots, zigzags and stripes.
Dark stripes stretch across the fish’s head, painting the area around the eyes.

Color and size vary depending on the type of fish. Popular species contained in aquariums:
- Mustambell carapace (M. armatus). It is also called the arched mastamble furniture. Growth ranges from 35−40 cm. The color is chocolate-olive with an intricate pattern. This species is most common in aquarium content.
- Mastamembel red-striped (M. erythrotaenia). This species is larger, it can grow up to 50 cm. It differs in that on a dark brown body there are strokes and spots of bright red or orange color.
- Thailand Mastastsemble (M. sircumcinctus), or Coffee Mast. It grows in an aquarium up to 30 cm. It has a yellow-gray color. The little body is obliquely painted with brown vertical stripes.
- The species M. armatus flavus hora was bred in India, while in Russia it is rarely encountered. The peculiarity of this species is the light color of the body, with darker zigzag stripes on the sides. Size – about 20 cm.
- Mastamembel Tanganyik (M. tanganicae) is of African origin. Sand color with a “marble” brown pattern. The size of the fish is about 20 cm.
At home, it is better to contain one representative of spiny eels. They do not suffer from loneliness, they always find something to do. These fish – night residents, in the daytime swim out of their shelters just for food.
They live in the aquarium from 8 to 18 years.

Even if the mastamblembel has not yet reached adult size, it is better to select an aquarium for the future. The fact is that the fish react extremely nervously to the change of residence.
It is optimal to buy mastamblembe with an aquarium familiar to him.
If the mastetsambel was released to a new aquarium, the owner should be prepared for the fact that the pet will be acclimatized for a long time – several weeks, up to a month. All this time, the fish will try to hide, will be apathetic and lethargic, may lose appetite. During this period, you need to try not to disturb the mastamblembel.
Over time, he will calm down and get used to his home.
Spiky eels spend most of their lives at the bottom of the aquarium, so when choosing a tank you need to pay attention to its shape. Height is not very important.
The main thing is that it is spacious in width and length.
The volume of water contained in the aquarium should be at least 200 liters. If it is possible, then it would be optimal to stop at an aquarium with a volume of 430 liters, having a length of 120 cm, and a width and depth of 60 cm. The aquarium should be constantly covered with a lid.
Armatus can squeeze through even a small gap and fall out.
