The content of males and females pseudotrophus lombardo cichlids

Pseudotropheus Lombardo Pseudotropheus lombardoi is a type of cichlid that is considered to be unique. By their nature, the fish are quite aggressive and even not all experienced aquarists are ready to start such predators in their aquarium.

Cichlid is very demanding in terms of habitat, so you need to be patient.

The lombardo cichlid, or mbuna, is the inhabitant of only one lake in the world. This is a tropical fish that favors the warm water of Malawi. Interestingly, before the pseudo-trophy was only on Mbenji Island and Nktomo Reef, where it was found and described for the first time in 1977.

To date, the area has expanded somewhat, and now mbunu can be found near the island Namalenzhi (Namalenje Island).

Lombardo – This is a near-bottom species of fish that likes to swim between large stones in sandy or silty areas. Males build nests in the form of pits in the sand and protect them from other male individuals.

Females and males that do not have their nests, as well as youngsters, gather in small shoals that migrate in the African lake.

Under natural conditions, Lombardo fishes reach a length of no more than 13 cm, while in an aquarium they can grow somewhat larger. If we talk about how to distinguish the female from the male pseudo-trophy of Lombardo, then there is one nuance. At first glance, everything is simple.

Individuals have a blue color and dark transverse bands along the body. The males are bright and their body is yellow.

But this characteristic applies only to alpha males. Subdominal males will be very similar in color to females, making it difficult to distinguish them.

Mbuna, like all cichlids, is very aggressive in nature, so Lombardo aquarium fish will not be able to get along with everyone. Their only neighbors may be only other representatives of cichlid ones, but peaceful ones are not suitable for this role.

As for the content, these fish are very fond of cleanliness, so any pollution affects their general condition.

Mbune will need to create The following conditions:

  1. The volume of the aquarium should be at least 200 liters per one male and two females.
  2. The water is warm, the temperature of which is in the range of 24−28 degrees.
  3. Fish prefer alkaline water, so it is necessary that the pH was in the range of 7.8− 8.6 units. To achieve this value, you can add coral chips or normal egg shells to your tank.
  4. Water hardness recommended 10−15 dGH.
  5. Sand is the ideal substrate. It is much easier to clean it of all kinds of pollution, especially ammonia. In addition, fish love to rummage in it.
  6. Since cichlids need clean water all the time, it will be necessary to take care of the presence of a good filter, and it will be necessary to change water every week without fail.
  7. Lighting should be moderate. In the aquarium should not get direct sunlight.
  8. Not all aquatic plants are suitable for a pseudotrophy aquarium, as their fish will constantly pull out. The ideal option in this case would be Anubias, which belongs to the hard-leaved species.
  9. As the decor fit all kinds of shelters that are very fond of Lombardo. But it will take time to time to check their stability, since cichlids can easily break them.
  10. You can feed a variety of food: both live and dry food. Since in natural conditions fish feed on algae, which they tear off from stones, it will be necessary to give vegetables or spirulina periodically at home.
