The content of macrognatus eel in aquarium conditions

Macrogatus is an aquarium inhabitant of the Mastazembelid family. According to the shape of his body, behavior and appearance, he looks like an ordinary eel. Its content in the home does not present any particular difficulties, but requires some knowledge.

In addition, the breeder will need to spend on an exotic pet a lot of time and money.

Makrognatus unpretentious content

The aquarium eel macrognatus is one of the most beautiful and unusual inhabitants of domestic reservoirs. Experienced aquarists have learned how to maintain it and create the most comfortable conditions for it.

Due to this, he will live long and multiply rapidly.

This representative of the aquatic fauna has a long and elongated, like a snake, body. At its end is a small and oblong head.

In the wild, acne macrognatuses can grow up to 40 cm long, and their aquarium relatives can only grow up to 25 centimeters. The upper body is covered with many thorns, which are used to protect against natural enemies.

Macrogatuses can reach 40cm in length

As a rule, females are slightly larger than males. Individuals of both sexes have anal and dorsal fins, which create a semblance of a tail.

Depending on the environmental conditions, their color can vary from light brown to red. On the dorsal fin, small dark spots are clearly visible, surrounded by a golden rim.

This species of aquarium eel has no pectoral fin.

The body of pets is colored unevenly. On it you can find brown, olive or light red shades. The sides of macrognatus are covered with a blurry pattern, and the head and body are covered with yellowish spots.

The abdomen is more uniform in color and much lighter than all other parts of the body.

This unusual fish is quite demanding on environmental conditions. Because of this feature, it is rarely found in the wild and lives only in several Asian countries.

On the other continents, macrogatus can be found only in an aquarium with special habitat conditions. In the wild, a representative fauna is found in the waters:

This fish prefers to settle in small rivers and lakes with fresh water. Sometimes it can be found in slightly salty water bodies.

Among the large number of species macrognatus there are several major, which are suitable for maintenance at home. The rest are absolutely not adapted for life in captivity and may die when trying to domestication. The most popular aquarium macrognats:

  1. Coffee. This aquatic inhabitant has a long dark brown body on which lighter fins are located. These fish are nocturnal and do not like a lot of light. They arrange for themselves cozy shelters in the snags, where they spend time before dark. This species is predisposed to various diseases and requires special conditions of detention.
  2. Siamese. This pet comes in a variety of sizes and colors, which vary according to environmental conditions. The fish is quite large, with a thick body and spots of marble color on the sides. Its neighbors can only be representatives of the fauna of the appropriate size, as it will consider smaller individuals as potential prey.
  3. Pearl. This kind of macrognatus is considered one of the smallest. The length of his body rarely reaches 17 centimeters. It is painted brown with silvery inclusions. The fish quickly adapts to changing environmental conditions and tolerates its proximity with other species.

Not all types of macrogatus are suitable for home keeping.

The content of ogly macrognatus can cause a lot of trouble to the owner. The main requirement will be to create a pet optimum conditions in the aquarium and providing it with specific food.

In order for an eel to feel comfortable at home, you need to try to recreate its natural habitat conditions. Only in this case, the fish will be healthy, strong and have an attractive appearance.

Proper care entails rapid reproduction. Given the value and high cost of this representative of aquatic fauna, the owner is guaranteed a good profit from the sales of offspring. Necessary conditions for the care and maintenance of macrogatus:

As a “house” for eel, you need to take a large aquarium with a tight-fitting lid.

For one individual, a reservoir volume of at least 100 liters is required. This is the minimum figure, which, if there is free space and opportunity, should be increased.

Macrogatus aquarium should have a closing lid

  • In the aquarium must be present soil. It should be poured in a thick layer on the bottom of the tank and try to avoid various sharp elements. This is done so that macrognatus can easily do their favorite thing – to dig in the ground.
  • It is recommended to plant a lot of green vegetation with a strong root system. If you can not find or buy it, you can use the method of planting in special pots. This will help the plants to resist contact with large inhabitants.
  • Pets need to get rid of the mucus that forms on the surface of their bodies, so large stones must be present in the aquarium. Before putting them in a container, they must first be sanded, which will protect the acne from getting any injuries.
  • In the wild, macrognats live near the shores, where there are many different tree roots, algae and snags, so it is recommended to add these components to the aquarium. However, it should be done in moderation, as excessive use can lead to insufficient space for swimming.
