The best aquarium fish

maintenance, care, compatibility

Deciding what kind of fish to start first in your tank can be sudden, and can be thought out. Unfortunately, novice aquarists are often guided by the very first impulse, completely without understanding the fish. And then, instead of joy and pleasure, they get a headache and problems.

You need to choose the fish wisely, because their life and your comfort depend on your choice. Before you go to the store or to the market, study all the available information about the fish that you liked.

What kind of fish is not worth buying for beginners, we have considered here. And the top 10 unusual fish here.

And in order to make it easier for you to navigate, we have compiled a list of the best aquarium fish for beginners and briefly described them. All of them are distinguished by unpretentiousness, tolerance to conditions in an aquarium, peaceful nature, livableness and modest size.

We hope that it will help make your choice easier!

One of the most beloved and easy to care for beginner aquarists are unpretentious aquarium fish. Such aquarium dwellers will not cause much trouble due to the endurance of their body and good adaptation even in a hard aquatic environment.

These fish will not be capricious about a small change in temperature or water hardness, and will be able to eat any suitable feed.

Goldfish – Voiletail

Many undemanding fish can easily breed in aquarium conditions. The only exception is haracin, which breeding is only possible for experienced aquarists.

For beginners in breeding recommended all types of viviparous toothed fish. And speckled catfish, antsistrusy can easily spawn in the general aquarium. Also easy to breed danios and barbs.

Labyrinths build foam nests, and cichlids bear offspring in the mouth.

However, in order to be sure of the safety and comfort of spawning fish, it is better to provide them with a separate aquarium and find out if they have a predisposition for cannibalism in order to avoid the death of their fry.

Aquarium pets, which are easy to maintain, pose no problem for responsible beginners in the water world. But the lazy owners of the aquarium will have to comply with the conditions necessary for the normal functioning of the fish, such as clean water and timely feeding, as this will depend on their lifespan.

Otherwise, even the most unpretentious fish will not be able to stretch for a long time.

But what are the most common fish, unpretentious in the care and useful in the aquarium? Aquarium catfish are the best helpers in cleaning and cleaning from deposits and dirt in the aquarium. As food they use the remnants of not eaten feed lying on the bottom and algae.

Like labyrinth, aquarium catfish are able to breathe atmospheric air and do not require the presence of a compressor in the aquarium. It is advisable to replace the water once a week 30% of the total.

Among all the species should be distinguished antsistrusov that are compatible with any fish and perfectly clean the aquarium, sticking to the walls of the tank. For all beginners it is recommended to purchase a pair of antsistrus, they will help the owner with cleaning the aquarium, reaching the most inaccessible places.

The most attractive among all catfish are corridors, the most peaceful are speckled catfish, and in large capacity, Taracatums will take root well.

These wide-spread fish wonderfully enjoy the love of aquarists besides their beauty. The most unpretentious goldfish is a voiletail and fantail.

These pets can go without food for 2-3 days, they are undemanding to the content and food.

What else should be considered when choosing the best aquarium.

– All aquarists, in one voice, I recommend to take initially a large-volume aquarium (from 100 liters). It is right, because such an aquarium is easier to care for, it is easier and faster to adjust the biobalance, adaptation and living aquarium inhabitants is better.

In general, there is less trouble!

However, do not think that small aquariums are worse, no! Just such aquariums need a little more attention.

And given the fact that many people do not have a living area, it is reasonable to start using “oceanariums” from a small aquarium. In addition, in a small aquarium, you can “practice” and see if you are interested in aquarism in principle or not, “get a hand”, well, so decide whether to take a large aquarium or not.

– On sale there are aquariums of the round form, various volume. As a rule, Goldfish are planted in such aquariums.

So, I hasten to warn you and say that such aquariums are not very convenient to maintain, moreover, their image is distorted by a spherical shape, and the fish in such aquariums are bad. Often, having suffered from such an aquarium, people make a decorative pot of flowers out of it.

At this aquarium ends and begins floristry :).

– On sale you can also find high, but not wide aquariums, made as aquarium paintings. Such aquariums are relatively inexpensive, but they are not the best for the title of the best. Firstly, because they are hard to care for, and secondly, aquarium fish will be bad in them, because for them the main length and width of the aquarium, and not height.

Height also plays a role, but in combination with length and width.

– The most common form of aquarium is a rectangular, but you can also recommend a panoramic aquarium or an aquarium with a convex front glass. Panoramic aquarium consists of 6 faces (walls) – which gives more viewing angles.

A tank with a convex front wall gives volume and looks more interesting than an aquarium with straight glass.

– When buying an aquarium, pay attention to its cover. Covers can be plastic, wooden or glass.

The main question is the lighting installed in the cover, which, as a rule, is usually not enough for aquarium plants. If your aquarium will have a lot of aquarium plants, the issue of lighting is best resolved immediately.

Pay attention to the fluorescent lamps on them: the number, power and characteristics.

The lack of lighting can be solved in two ways: self-adding lighting (add. Lamp or diode tape) or the initial purchase of a glass cover, and to it the “right amount” of lighting.

– When buying an aquarium, you should pay attention and carefully check it for the presence of chips and microcracks. Consider that even the smallest crack under the pressure of water will sooner or later turn into a huge hole.

This rule should be especially followed if the aquarium is purchased through an online store. Movers do not really stand on ceremony with the goods delivered.

Carefully check everything when delivering the aquarium to your home.

Talk about choosing the best aquarium can be a lot, but as they say it is better to see once than to hear once. Therefore, we proceed below to a visual study of the issue.

General aquarium – it is intended for keeping fish of various types. As a rule, in such an aquarium fish are selected according to the principle of compatibility.

Most aquariums are just common aquariums.

Species Aquarium – an aquarium in which fish of only one species are contained. A characteristic example is an aquarium with discus.

DISCUSSIONS They are called kings of the aquarium and as a rule they are kept separately because they are expensive, large and fastidious to the conditions of detention.

Photos of species aquarium with scalars

Spawning aquarium – it is intended for cultivation of fishes, spawning, incubation of caviar and cultivation of fry. As a rule, such aquariums do not have a large volume and in such aquariums they create special conditions (temperature, lighting) and certain water parameters (dH, pH), which contribute to the spawning of certain fish.

Spawning aquarium can also be divided into incubator – it is intended for cultivation of caviar, fish larvae, nursery aquarium – it is intended for cultivation of the grown up juvenile fry.

In terms of shape and function, a spawning aquarium is no different from other aquariums, it is needed exclusively as a separate body of water.

Thus, if you want to breed fish, in addition to the general or specific aquarium, you must also buy a spawning.

Quarantine aquarium or medical – as well as spawning is a separate reservoir, but intended to check the newly purchased fish and treat sick fish.

In such an aquarium, a quarantine for new fish is arranged in order not to infect the common main aquarium. The need for quarantine is due to the fact that even if you bought a seemingly healthy fish, signs of illness may appear in a week.

During this period, the fish in the quarantine of the aquarium are checked for lice, and, in addition, adaptation measures are carried out – water is gradually added from the main aquarium to the quarantine. Adaptation is needed because Some fish do not tolerate abrupt changes in the parameters of the aquarium water, from which die a week later.

Quarantine aquarium is especially needed if you purchase fish in the Bird market, as a rule, in such markets there are many contagious and sick fish. In pet stores, this risk is less, but still it is.

In addition, quarantine aquarium can be used as an aquarium for the treatment of diseased fish. The treatment can be carried out in the general aquarium, but firstly, you will unnecessarily poison the healthy – non-diseased fish with chemistry, secondly, aquarium plants may react badly to chemistry and medications, and in general the biobalance and microflora of aquarium water will be disturbed, besides remain the risk of indiscriminate disease of all fish.

Therefore, it is always recommended to remove the diseased fish in a quarantine tank and conduct individual treatment there until full recovery.

Aquariums can also be divided into:

Biotope – in it imitate separately taken underwater landscape (lake, stream).

Biotope Aquarium Photos

Dutch – Aquarium designed for aquarium plants, it is also called “herbalist”.

Photos of the Dutch aquarium

Geographical – in such an aquarium contain fish from one region.

Freshwater, saltwater, marine aquarium – Most aquariums are freshwater bodies of water, but there are aquariums that contain saline or marine fish.

For general development, it can also be said that the structure can be divided into: frame, frameless, asbestos cement, Plexiglas.

And of course, there is still
shrimps, aquariums for turtles, newts, frogs and others.

Popular and beautiful predators from home aquariums

Place a tank for predatory fish in a calm, well-lit corner. The larger the size of the aquarium, the better for all the fish. Predatory pets need optimal water parameters, do not tolerate temperature fluctuations, which also provokes aggressive behavior.

The parameters of the aquatic environment need to be adjusted by instruments, any changes affect the overall condition. Filtration, aeration should be permanent.

Decorate the water landscape with snags, caves, stones, clay pots, water broad-leaved plants with a strong root system. The easiest way to contain predators tsihlazom and cancer because of the larger size and simplicity.

Smaller predators require serious training aquarist. Do not immerse hands in the tank with water, treated with cosmetics, or scratched, with bruises.

Carnivorous species can attack a wounded arm and damage it.

Look at the feeding of predatory aquarium fish.

Predatory aquarium fish just will not attack their neighbors or people. If this happens, then there are reasons for it, among them may be:

  • Desire to satisfy your appetite, hunger;
  • The desire to defend their territory;
  • Spawning and protection of offspring;
  • Conflict between males over a female, or dominant behavior;
  • Similar body color, or bright body color of another fish;
  • The small size of the body of neighbors, their sluggishness;
  • Aggressive human behavior.

When settling it is necessary to take into account that representatives of one species get along better with each other. Exceptions are barbs, polypteruses, sharks, piranhas and other species that live better alone, or in very spacious tanks with other fish. African cichlids do not live with South American for the reason that they need different water parameters.

Dwarf cichlids live well with apistograms, patsils, mollies, scalars, and pelminochromis.

Do not settle small herbivorous fish with predatory, all aquarian inhabitants must be proportionate, have the same taste habits. Feed everyone in time.

Make sure that during the holidays someone feeds your pets, otherwise those who are stronger will destroy the weaker ones. Feed predatory fish in small portions 2 times a day. The abundance of animal feed with protein content is the key to their well-being.

If a hungry predator decides to eat another fish, he can wait for it for a long time from an ambush. Try to avoid such moments, create the most comfortable conditions for all pets.

Dear reader! This article is a team of all the articles on our site.

We also tried to supplement the article with the nuances of maintaining and caring for goldfish in an aquarium.
Why do you need such an article? Everything is very simple.

Many beginners in the aquarium world do not know how to contain them, make gross mistakes, as a result of which in a month the goldfish at best fall ill with fin rot and at worst pop up with the belly up.

For example, often on our forum, and on the Internet as a whole, they ask the question – why does my goldfish swim sideways or belly up? When you start to understand, look for the cause of this disease and ask questions to the owner. the answer is by itself and literally lies on the surface of the water.
Many do not know, forget, or do not want to know that feeding fish should be balanced, that is, in their diet should include dry food, and live and vegetable. Goldfish are gluttonous, prone to overeating, so the question of balance in the diet for them as for anyone is relevant. As for the aforementioned question, the answer is simple – in the process of eating dry food, goldfish swallow air with food.

If you feed them only dry food, fish, due to excess air in the food system, begin to float belly up. The problem is solved elementary – the fish are transferred to the correct, full-fledged feeding and after 3-4 days the goldfish begin to swim normally.
Alas, such examples are mass and it is impossible to highlight everything. But, we still try to do it, by centralizing all the information about goldfish.

We will try to focus on the most important points of the content of gold aquarium fish.

Goldfish: description, types, highlights

And so, you read my article on the launch of a nano-aquarium, or you just wanted to start your own little water world for a long time and now you are thinking about who to settle there.

Quite a lot of options)

All the inhabitants of the underwater world can be divided into vertebrates, invertebrates and mollusks.

Vertebrates include various types of fish. To invertebrates – shrimp, crabs and crayfish.

To mollusks – snails.

You can choose one of these kingdoms (for example, make a shrimp maker), or you can combine two or even all three.

The traditional is an aquarium populated by fish. Only here you cannot plant everybody in a small aquarium; you will have to choose small schooling fish or one or two medium ones.

Possible options for settling the FISH Aquarium:

1. Petushki:

Very famous and common fish. Males are very beautiful, have luxurious fan fins.

Females are less elegant, but also very brightly colored. Breeders are constantly working on breeding new colors of males.

They are satisfied with small amounts of water (but, you see, keeping the fish in an aquarium of less than 5 liters is both cruel and ugly). Water temperature – ideally 26 degrees. The cockerel breathes atmospheric air, swallowing it from the surface.

Therefore, care must be taken that the air in the room is not too cool. You can cover the aquarium cover, but leave a few inches from the surface of the water.

Male males are very pugnacious, so it’s best to keep them alone or in families (1 male and 3-4 females).

The body length of an adult cockerel is about 6 cm.

2. Neons

Also known Russian fish. Neons prefer to live in flocks, so it is better to settle them in groups of 5 individuals.

The water temperature is 22-25 degrees (ideally); at higher temperatures, the lifetimes of these fish are reduced. In principle, neons are unpretentious, like soft water and an abundance of plants.

Prone to obesity, so they should be fed very moderately.

Adult neon can reach a length of 4 cm.

3. Danio rerio:

As a rule, these small fish are always recommended for beginners. Moving, fun and unpretentious danios feel best in flocks. They can live in the temperature range of 15-30 degrees and be content with 1 liter of water per 1 fish (that is, even in a five-liter aquarium, you can run a group of 5 zebrafish).

Easily spawn in an aquarium.

There are several color forms of this fish.

Body length up to 5 cm (but more often 3-4).

4. Guppy:

Probably, it is from this fish that aquarism begins for most people. It was the guppies living in three-liter banks that became frequent inhabitants of Soviet (and then Russian) apartments.

They are loved by millions for their unpretentiousness (they can live even in the most extreme conditions), beauty (thanks to the many unique colors, everyone can find “the fish of their dreams” =)) and fertility (you can buy only one female, and in a month she will give birth to you 20 fry).

Viviparous guppies, i.e. they do not spawn, but give birth to live fry. They eat absolutely everything.

Water temperatures are undemanding.

At first, I really liked them, but now they multiplied uncontrollably. It even annoys me that every week I find at least 20 newborn fry in the aquarium.

The males are guppies slender, with a bright body and a luxurious tail. Samochki larger, thicker, gray and inconspicuous.

But there are quite beautiful purebred females.

Breeders are constantly working on new breeds of guppy.

Dimensions: male – 3-4 cm, female – up to 6 cm.

(last 2 photos – females)

5. Guppy Endler:

In fact, the same guppy. But Endler’s guppy is a wild form that breeders did not manage to work on. Such fish are found in Venezuela. easily interbreed with simple guppies and produce very cute hybrids)

Endler’s guppies are smaller than ordinary guppies: males reach 2-3 cm in length. Look great in small aquariums with a dark background!

6. Corridor:

The so-called “speckled catfish”. In fact, the corridors are very many species, just speckled – the most famous of them.

The corridors love the company, buy at once 3-5 individuals. These harmless catfish do not exceed 5 cm in length, some species (such as the corridor panda) do not grow more than 3 cm at all.

Unpretentious, can live without aeration. The soil should be without sharp stones so that the fish do not hurt their delicate antennae.

The optimum temperature of the content – 24-26 degrees.

Water volume: at least 3-5 liters for 1 fish.

7. Corridor Pygmy:

View corridors, which is worth to say separately.

Pygmies are small schooling fishes, seemingly gray and inconspicuous, but very cute and interesting in behavior. They feel good only in a flock, they like clean, oxygenated water.

Unlike other corridors, they do not sit only in the bottom layer of water, but prefer to “flit” all over the aquarium, like a flock of birds.

8. Cardinal:

Prefers neutral water, rather cool (18-21 °). For 1 fish requires 3 liters of water. Small fishes, 3-4 cm, quite mobile.

They love the abundance of plants, omnivores.

9. Micro disassembly:

An ideal fish for a nano-aquarium. Body length rarely exceeds 2 cm. Water temperature is 22-28 degrees, unpretentious to the composition of water, 1 fish requires less than 1 liter of water.

Unfortunately, micro-assemblies are now rarely available, aquarists have been waiting for these fish to be delivered to stores for months.

10. Norman Blue-Eye:

Cute schooling fish that grow up to 3-4 cm. Their eyes glow brightly with neon light, which gives the aquarium a kind of dynamics and charm.

Peaceful schooling fish, water temperature 20-25 degrees. I live at a higher temperature, very active and playful.

And so, we looked at fish that would be happy even in a small aquarium of 10-30 liters.

Approximate settlement options:

ONLY ONE OF THE PROPOSED OPTIONS!

• 5-7 guppies Endler;

• 5 Norman blue-eyed;

• 7 micro-sampling + 5 danio-rerio;

• 3 Endler guppies + 5 danios-rerio;

• 3 neons + 3 guppies.

• Family of cockerels (1 male and 3 females);

• 1 cock + 3 corridors;

• 10-15 guppies or Endler’s guppies;

• 10-15 Norman blue-eyed;

• 7 pygmy corridors;

• 5 guppies + 5 neons;

• 15 Danio-rerio + 15 microassembly;

• 10 guppies + 3 corridors;

• 7 neons + 3 corridors.

Here the possibilities are even greater) For example, such fish may be settled, which I did not tell about here. A pair of macropods, a couple of honey gouras, a pair of pelvicahromis or apistograms.

The remaining combinations – we look at 10 liters and multiply the number of fish by 3.

Naturally, it is better to run less fish than planned. Overpopulation is very dangerous for such small volumes. In any case, filtration, aeration and a weekly water change of 20-30% should be provided.

Nowadays, shrimpers are coming into fashion – aquariums populated with freshwater prawns.

Shrimps are unpretentious, cute and very interesting.

Aquarium SHRIMPS:

1. Cherry shrimp (cherry):

Small (up to 3 cm) red shrimp. Extremely unpretentious.

It breeds well in an aquarium.

2. Amano shrimp (Japanese pond):

More than a cherry (up to 6 cm). Gray, perfectly fights with algal fouling.

In an aquarium where shrimps live, the plants are always clean and well maintained.

In captivity do not breed.

3. Shrimp Crystal:

Small (2 cm), expensive, rather demanding to water, but very beautiful shrimp.

4. Shrimp Cardinal:

Very beautiful and very rare shrimp. Considered difficult to maintain.

5. Yellow shrimp:

Unpretentious small shrimp bright yellow. If it is undernourished, it can begin to spoil the plants.

If you want to keep only shrimp (without fish), then you can plant a rather large flock in a small volume. For example, 20-25 shrimp-cherries will feel great in 10 liters.

Shrimps do not touch the fish, but some fish are not averse to eat shrimp. Therefore, the ideal neighbors for shrimp will be small fish, such as the Endler guppies, microassemblies, neons, corridors and Norman blue-eyes.

The calculation is approximately as follows:

20 liters: 10 shrimp-cherries + 5-7 guppies Endler (or other small fish).

Shellfish in an aquarium:

Some snails are also quite cute and even useful. They will be excellent neighbors for your fish or shrimp.

1. Helena:

Cute striped snail that feeds. other snails. It helps to get rid of the invasion of pond snails and coils that spoil the plants.

For lack of “live food” eats the remnants of fish food. It breeds well in an aquarium.

2. Neretina:

Beautiful and useful snail. Helps to clear a raid from walls and plants.

It lays caviar, but the whites do not appear in fresh water.

3. Ampularia:

The most favorite snail, very often found in aquariums.

Unfortunately, some types of ampoulyaries spoil the plants. And there is a lot of dirt from them.

RESULTS:

I tried to introduce you to creatures that will feel great in a small (10-30 l) aquarium. Aquarium with small, nimble fish or business-like shrimps will greatly decorate your apartment or office.

With proper and timely care, he will long please you.

About how to run an aquarium, I wrote in the article “The underwater world on your desk.”

I repeat once again simple rules that will help you to always keep your aquarium in good condition:

1. DO NOT HURRY! The launch of the aquarium should last at least 2 weeks (from the water up to the launch of the fish).

2. Down with artificiality! Plants, soil and decorations in the aquarium should be NATURAL.

No plastic!

3. The filter should work around the clock !.

4. Water changes should be done once a week, at 20-30%. Never change all the water at once!

Never wash the scenery with chemicals!

5. Feed the fish a little! One day a week – unloading.

6. If after you install the filter, there was a dregs – do not rush to change the water! All is well, the appearance of turbidity suggests that a balance has begun to be established.

After a couple of days the water will be clean.

7. Do not overdo it with fish! Less is more.

8. Remember: an aquarium is a complex biological system. Do not climb there once again with your hands, do not make chemistry or other drugs.

9. Fish – also alive. And you are responsible for her life.

There is nothing difficult in aquarism. Learn to be patient, do not neglect the advice, do not forget to devote half an hour a week to your underwater world – and he will thank you.

Coming home, you will enjoy the lush green plants and frolicking fish.

Successes to all who decided to start an aquarium!

Next time I will try to tell you something else interesting from the world of aquarism)
