Tetra Kitty (Hyphessobrycon heliacus) described by ichthyologists in 2002.
Tetra Kitty, Hifessobrikon Heliacus, Tetra Heliacus – all these are the names of the fish, which appeared recently in European and domestic aquarists.
Habitat: An elegant Kharacin fish inhabits the Tapajos River, located in Brazil.
Tetra Kitty’s natural habitat (Hyphessobrycon heliacus) – the Tapajos River
Description: body high, flattened laterally. The eyes are large, the iris is yellow, and the pupil is black. The upper third of the eye is red.
The color is golden, smoothly turning into gold-olive in the upper part. Near the gill covers dark strokes.
Unpaired fins with a pinkish tinge, brighter in males. At the base of the tail stalk is a large black spot. In males, this spot passes to the tail and seizes the anal fin from the edge, smoothly flowing into a narrow black border.
Dorsal fin crescent and high. The adipose fin is rather large in comparison with the fin of similar-sized haracin fishes of other species and is strongly shifted towards the caudal fin.
Typically, the size of tetras Heliacus does not exceed 3 cm, sometimes 4 cm.
Arrangement and parameters of the aquarium: a pair of heliakusis requires a 20-liter capacity, but since the schooling fish, it is better to keep at least 10 individuals in an aquarium from 100 liters.
In the aquarium we need both areas with dense vegetation, and free space for swimming. Plants can be planted any, fish to them are absolutely indifferent.
In order to display the coloring of the tetra Kitty in all its magnificence, the lighting must be mixed – luminous and ordinary. It is in this spectrum that the emerald hue on the back and pink on the fins are most noticeable.
Water parameters: 23-26 ° C, dH up to 12 °, pH 6.5-7.
Persistently tolerate a short-term increase or decrease in temperature.
Installation of the filter and the aerator is desirable. Replacing a quarter of the water should be carried out weekly and carefully monitor the content of nitrogen in the water.
They usually stay in the middle layer and closer to the bottom. In the normal state they are inactive, they can freeze in one place without movement.
They begin to show extreme activity after feeding, rapidly moving together in a flock along the aquarium.
Tetra Kitty (Hyphessobrycon heliacus) compatible with calm and equally small haracin and carp fish.
Nutrition: accepts any type of feed of suitable size.
Reproduction: The spawning volume for breeding tetra kitty should be 10, maximum 20 liters. At the bottom of the separator is laid mesh, placed Javanese moss.
It is advisable to install in the aquarium spray with a slight movement of air.
Tetra Kitty – male
Water parameters in the spawning aquarium: 27 ° С, dGH 1.5, pH 6.4.
To reduce stress in fish, spawning is covered with dark paper on three sides.
Tetra Kitty – female
Producers (one pair) run into the aquarium in the evening, and spawn the next morning.
Eggs are not sticky, yellowish. One female is able to sweep about 150 eggs, but half of them, as a rule, will not be fertilized.
Fry hatch on the second day. Gray larvae, very small, but with a large yolk sac. During this period, the spawn can be completely darkened, since the fry are very concerned about light.
By the third day, they form eyes and dissolve the yolk sacs. At this point, it is important to remove the unfertilized eggs and its membranes from the aquarium.
On the fourth day, the fry amicably spread across the aquarium and are able to take the ciliates and nauplii of Artemia. In the first week, food for the fry should be available constantly and in small portions. Before the juveniles reach one and a half months, feeding is carried out by nauplii of Artemia twice a day.
Then the ration is expanded thoroughly washed and crushed tubule.
Tetra Kitty – teenager
The first month of the Kitty tetra fry develops extremely slowly, but in the second month of life the growth becomes rapid and the fish within two weeks can double the dimensions, at the same time acquiring the form of the body of adult individuals. Three-month fish have fully formed color, characteristic of adult helakusy.
Sex differences appear by half a year, and at 8 months the fish are already able to multiply.
Lifespan Tetras Kitty (Hyphessobrycon heliacus) ranges from 2 to 5 years.
