Tetra Firefly (Hemigrammus erythrozonus) – content, breeding

Erythrosonus (Hemigrammus erythrozonus), bearing the name Tetra Svetlyachok, from the family of haracin.

First came to the European continent in 1939, and in 1957 was introduced to the USSR.

Habitat: Hemigrammus from South America. Inhabits the longest river in Western Guyana – Essequibo.

Fish are found in slow-flowing shallow tributaries of the river, located among the forests. The water in them is dark brown, very sour and soft, containing many tannins due to the large amount of decaying organic matter.

Description: the body is elongated, slightly flattened laterally, has a silver-peach or gray-green color.

A distinctive feature of erizotronus is a luminous red-gold band (which is most noticeable in high light), passing along the entire body, from the eyes to the tail. Belly light. Tail fin with two blades.

The anal fin is much longer than the dorsal fin, on which there is a bright red stripe in front. The fins are transparent with tips of a milky color, which in males are richer.

The iris of the eyes is red from above, below is blue.

Tetra Firefly – male and female

There is a small fat fin.

Males are painted more intensely, they are more graceful than females, which have a fuller and convex belly.

The size of the fish does not exceed 3-4 cm.

Arrangement and parameters of the aquarium: The small size of the firefly allows it to be kept even in 20-liter aquariums, but since Tetra Firefly (Hemigrammus erythrozonus) schooling, it will be more comfortable in the society of their relatives in the amount of 8-12 fish. The volume of the aquarium in this case should be from 50 liters.

Plants are planted thickly, you can use any species. For swimming should leave free areas.

To create a shadow zone, floating plants are placed on the surface. The soil should be dark, on a light background the fish look faded.

An imitation of the tropics can be created by placing a snag and some dried beech or oak leaves in an aquarium. Added to the filter pieces of peat will complete the creation of dark tropical waters, familiar to erythrozonus.

Water parameters: 22-26 ° C, dH 4-10, pH 6.5-7.5.

Requires good filtration with aeration, a 30 percent weekly water change. Ill with an increased content of nitrates in water and lack of oxygen.

Tetra firefly can peacefully coexist with almost any non-aggressive species. Good neighbors will be cockerels, rasbory, other tetras, danios, catfish. Permissible content with dwarf cichlid, shrimp and some types of gourami.

But large cichlids will regard fireflies as food.

Nutrition: unpretentious, takes all the food, but if the basis of the diet are live (daphnia, bloodworm and artemia), the fish’s coloring and well-being improves. From dry feeds you can feed pellets and flakes.

Herbal supplement is desirable.

Reproduction: In the spawning tank, the volume of which is 10 liters, with a water level of 15 cm, they place a separator net, several bushes of long-stem plants that will create a shadow, and a small-leaved bush (Javanese or brook moss) that will serve as a substrate.

Water parameters in the spawning aquarium: 25-28 ° C, dH 5-6, pH 6-7. Water must be peat.

Spawning is better to darken.

Before spawning, the fish are divided for a couple of weeks and fed with live food, preferably crustaceans. It is important to ensure that the female does not overeat, otherwise her cyst will develop and the fish will lose the ability to spawn.

For breeding, a female and two males are needed, which are launched into the aquarium in the evening. Fish can spawn in the morning. The female lays 250-300 eggs.

After that, adult fish settle out, the water level drops to 5-10 cm. Whitish eggs should be removed.

Incubation of caviar – 2 days. For 4-7 days they can eat rotifers or infusoria.

It is desirable that the feed be available constantly, but in small quantities. The water in the aquarium should always be clean, you need constant small water changes.

When the fry begins to show a characteristic red strip, you can transfer them to feeding with a cut pipe shaker, which will significantly accelerate growth.

Erythrosonus becomes capable of reproduction upon reaching 6-10 months.

Lives Tetra Firefly (Hemigrammus erythrozonus) 2-4 years.
