Information about African trunks belonging to the family Mastacembelidae, almost never occurs. For a long time, these fish remain mysterious inhabitants of the aquarium, which have much in common with aframastatsimbelbel marmoratus.
However, it is likely that this is a completely different fish.
The body is cylindrical in shape with great muscle mass, and the head ends in a narrow head with a fleshy beak. The maximum body length is 45 centimeters, the minimum is 30.
Along the sides is a wide ribbon of chocolate color, which has a dark speck. The upper back of the male golden-yellow color with short spikes.
In females, the belly is noticeably fuller than in males and they are brown in color.
Despite the decent dimensions of afromastocembela are absolutely safe for fish such as cardinals, red and blue neons, rasbora and nanostomus. Only strongly bothersome bottom fish living in burrows can pinch their snouts.
Most of the time mastacembels spend buried in the aquarium soil, and on the surface there is only a muzzle with flickering eyes that look out some tidbit of a pipemaker or bloodworm. Because of the narrow throat, the fish is not able to feed on earthworms.
Mature fish become three years old. By the time of puberty in females, the belly is strongly rounded and an egg deposit appears, and in males a bright color appears.
If you want to accelerate puberty, you can use pituitary injections for loaches.
Spawning of bandage trunk seasonal and per year fish can spawn up to 4 times a year. The main requirement for spawning aquarium – sterility banks and a large area of the bottom of the aquarium.
The main difficulties occur near the bottom, where future parents twist into a ball. When fish start, caviar crumbles on the ground and adheres tightly to it.
Cannibal tendencies among manufacturers are completely absent. The maximum fecundity of one female at a time can comprise up to 500 eggs, of which no more than 40% is useful.
On the 9th day of life, the mastamembell larvae are already able to feed on rotifers. To prevent the young growth from being sucked into the filter, it is turned off, and the aquarium should be aerated through a sponge filter.
If there is such a need to isolate manufacturers of glass, then it is done only on a smooth bottom. If a small grain of sand falls under the partition, the fish can catch on the edge of the glass and crawl into another compartment. In the same way, trunk snails crawl under small crevices between the walls of the aquarium and the cover glass.
Under good conditions and clean water with temperatures ranging from 24 to 30 degrees, fish can live up to 10 years in aquarium conditions.
