Sterba Corridor (catfish): content, spawning, photo, diet, aquarium, water parameters

The Sterba Corridor is a fish common in Russian and foreign aquariums. Its popularity is due to its peace-loving nature and unpretentiousness to the surrounding conditions of detention.

From other catfishes, usually having an unremarkable dull color, Sterba has a brighter color.

Сorydoras sterbai or Sterba’s corridor is a bottom species belonging to ray-finned fish from the family Carapace catfish. Distributed as an aquarium fish. The name was in honor of the famous zoologist from Germany Günther Sterba.

The natural habitat is Brazil and South America; it lives in large numbers in the Guapor, Amazon and Mato Gross rivers, in its upper reaches.

It lives in fresh waters, prefers rivers, streams with a weak current. Sometimes found in small swamps, backwaters, lakes, ponds.

In such bodies of oxygen, a small amount comes to the bottom, so the Sterba fish learned to breathe air.

The body size at the corridor is 6 cm, in the natural environment the length of the body is a couple of centimeters longer. They have a soft color, but it still attracts attention.

The main background is dark gray-brown. The whole body is covered with small spots of light color, pale yellow, beige or white.

On the head, specks are scattered chaotically, and on the body, fins and tail form visible lines resembling dotted lines. The number of lanes ranges from 4 to 8.

Such a spotty color makes it look like the Schultz corridor. But the difference is that the Schulz catfish is white with dark spots, and Sherba catfish is the opposite.

Pectoral and abdominal fins are colored orange-yellow. The same color has and iris.

The corridor does not tolerate loneliness. The only possible way of life is keeping in flocks from 5 to 20 representatives in size.

Fish has a peaceful temperament, there is no aggression towards other fish or representatives of their own species. Skirmishes occur only during the spawning period, when males fight for females.

Aquarists say its fearful nature, so it is better not to make sudden movements and not give the fish cause for fear.

These fish are rather difficult to tolerate transportation or change of residence, and some representatives get used to the new environment for a long time. At this time, they behave restlessly, often float up, beat against the walls.

After some time, the catfish calm down and get used to it.

Longevity of soms depends on the conditions of detention. In captivity, the fish do not live more than 4 years.

In the wild, wild fish live to be 7–8 years old.

For a comfortable stay populate a flock of corridors. The cover of the aquarium should not fit snugly, because the catfish sometimes float to the surface for oxygen. Provide places for recreation and shelter.

Catfish absolutely do not tolerate the content in water of salts or chemical impurities, so be careful and follow these indicators. Weekly replaced by 1/3 of the water.

For a flock of fish in 6 representatives will require an aquarium of 100-150 liters. The length of the wall is 50–60 cm, and the bottom space should have a large area.

Shelters are set: snags, turrets, stone mounds, coconuts, shards.

Catfish are thermophilic and the water temperature they need is not lower than 25 degrees. Water hardness does not exceed 20 dH, and acidity is about 7 pH.

Vegetation in the aquarium is necessary for the normal development of catfish. When spawning, white eggs are laid on it, in dense grass they hide in danger.

Protects the vegetation of fish from bright light, creating shady places.

Because of the love of catfish for digging the soil, choose vegetation with a developed root system, which it does not hurt, or buy artificial plants. Another option – plants that do not have a root system and freely floating on the surface.

Suitable plant species:

  • vallisneria;
  • water fern;
  • cinema;
  • cryptocoryne;
  • Anubias;
  • richie;
  • duckweed.

It is better to choose soil with small granules, for example, sand, crushed pebbles or gravel. The edges of the substrate of the bottom should not have chips and cracks, about which catfish can damage the face when digging.

The soil is preferably dark.

When digging the ground, the corridors raise turbidity and dust in the water, so a powerful filter with a sponge in the aquarium is a must-have equipment. Aerating devices are introduced at will, as soma can breathe air, but to do this, air must circulate between the lid and water.

It is better to install a not too powerful compressor.

Catfish are predominantly nocturnal and twilight animals, so they do not tolerate direct light. Lighting make diffused and weak.

Natural food of corridors – earthworms, crustaceans, insect larvae and insects themselves, vegetation. During life in aquariums, they feed on particles of food that have settled to the bottom. When hunger rises for food to the surface.

Make sure that other nimble fish do not eat catfish or buy heavy feed particles that settle quickly on the bottom. Eat at dusk or dark.

Fish is considered omnivorous, but a variety of diet will ensure the health of the pet. Feed them allowed all kinds of food: dry, live, frozen, special flakes or compressed food in the form of tablets or pellets.

But do not feed som protein food too often.

Well suited artemia, bloodworm, earthworm, daphnia, tubim. Feed 1-2 times a day.

Because of the peaceful nature get along with all the fish. But aggressive and territorial fish, like cichlids and discus, will attack catfish, so it is better to avoid neighborhoods with them. Well suited haratsinovye, carp, all catfish, tetra, labyrinth fish and viviparous:

Prepare a separate spawning tank, which will spawn and fry will be grown. It settles the substrate, plants are planted, which will be the eggs.

Its size should accommodate a flock of 5–6 fish, but if the volume does not allow, then the female and 1–3 males should be transplanted from the total flock.

For the approximation of spawning in the aquarium change the environmental conditions. Water changes become daily, and the amount of feed increases. So the fish will understand that now is a favorable period for procreation.

Water temperature is reduced, because in nature it means the onset of the rainy season, which provides an abundance of food.

Sterby catfish have a well-developed sexual dimorphism and it is not difficult to distinguish representatives.

  • Females They have a larger physique and are larger than males. The belly is rounded and convex, and the color is more modest.
  • The males. Differ in beauty and graceful constitution, but the smaller size. The body is elongated, the stomach does not bulge. The fins and part of the abdomen are brightly colored orange; This is especially noticeable during the breeding season.

When the female’s abdomen starts to round, this means that eggs will soon appear. More often, the female spawn at night. It swims many times to plants and produces about 5 eggs at a time.

The total number of eggs is 100–200 and their throwing lasts half a day or the whole day.

Make sure that the spawning is over and send the parents back to the general aquarium. If this is not done, then the catfish will eat caviar.

They have no parental instincts. For the development of fry, the temperature in the spawning pool rises to 25–27 degrees.

A week later, fry appear from the roe. Activity comes to them after 2 days, before that the fry are almost immobile.

A miniature feed in the form of ciliates is suitable for feeding fry. Adolescents fed crushed tubule, earthworm or artemia.

Sterbi are characterized by strong immunity and are not susceptible to most diseases. The most common are:

  • ammonia poisoning, nitrates;
  • stress from moving or fighting with other fish;
  • muzzle damage on sharp edges of the ground.

Aquarists who have bought this catfish note their interesting behavior and eye-catching spotted color. They are nimble and do not give the aquarium look motionless. But some buyers have difficulty in reproduction, and soma parents eat eggs.

Another small minus – you can not keep them alone, only a bunch.

The cost of fish depends on their age, health and body size. You can buy in pet stores or online stores.

Size, cmCost, rub
Fry, 1-2100
Teens, 2–3250
Young representatives, 3–3.5350
Adult fish, 3.5–4.5400

The popularity of Sterba som for a long time will not pass, because this type is suitable for beginners and experienced aquarists. Fish have a long life, and for a long time will be your pets and friends, pleasing the eye and uplifting.
