Starfish antsistrus fish – keeping and spawning in an aquarium

Hello, friends! Today I want to talk with you about another friend of the aquarium, which undoubtedly helps the aquarist keep the bank clean.

Star Antsistrus is a unique aquarium fish, whose homeland is swamps, fast flowing streams and rivers, various ditches Peru and Gaina.

Undoubtedly, this type of ancistrus is not so popular, unlike the common anticrusta, but it also has its charms. The stellate ancistrus belongs to the family of small chain mail catfish. The body of the fish is flattened and elongated in length, and the top is covered with bone plates, only the belly of the fish is not protected from armor.

The aquarium fish is armed with a suction mouth similar to another aquarium hygiene — the girinoheylus. Thanks to this unique structure of the mouth, it can scrape algae and food from various surfaces.

The body of the fish is painted black, which is diluted with a small scattering of white dots, which will become whitish-brown with age. In young, the fins have a white edging, which disappears with age. The head of a male is armed with powerful growths, unlike females, which have no tentacles, or they are poorly developed.

In length, star ancistrus grows up to 8 centimeters.

Due to its simplicity, star antsistrus recommend novice aquarists. The most active fish is getting closer in the evening. If you have very bright lighting in the aquarium, then catfish strives to constantly hide somewhere.

If there are no decorative shelters in the form of grottoes or pots, then aquarium plants and snags are suitable for this purpose. Although the males of this species of antsistrus are very territorial, yet their clashes do not lead to any negative consequences.

A small group of star friends need to be kept in a bank that will be longer than 60 centimeters. Be sure to place in the aquarium all kinds of shelters, grottoes, caves and driftwood.

When scraping catfish snags, he gets vital to him cellulose. I recommend putting stones in the aquarium at the very bottom, but not on the ground, as the fish will constantly dig it under a pebble and may accidentally crush it.

If you do not want the constant clashes of two territorial males of Ancistrus, I recommend you not to spare money for a good and large jar, as for successful keeping of a pair of fish you need an aquarium from 200 liters. Since the fish is unpretentious, the chemical properties of water have wide ranges: water temperature is 20-28 ° C, pH 5.5-7, hardness 2-15 °.

If you settled your antsistrusov in a large aquarium, then there will be plenty of food there. The food will go tableted feed, which feed on bottom fish.

The process of breeding a star friend is similar to spawning an ordinary fellow, there is nothing new here. Spawns in the general aquarium, laying eggs under stones or in other shelters, and in spawning.

If you have problems with the presence of a spawning aquarium, try to breed small fish in a common bank.
