Star Antsistrus (catfish l181): content, breeding (reproduction), photo, care, appearance, compatibility, feeding

Star Antsistrus – aquarium fish that conquered many. It remains less popular than the ancistrus ordinary. It belongs to the group of Loricarii som (L-Soma), for most of which there is no scientific name.

It was decided to assign a specific number for each species. In aquariums often contains a variation number l181 (“mint stuck”).

In nature, star-shaped catfish inhabit the rivers, swamps and lakes of the Amazon, Brazil and Peru. They like ponds with a stony and clay bottom.

In shallow water there are young individuals, and adults – in shaded areas.

The maximum size of the oblong body is up to 9 cm. There are protective plates on the back. Color of body and fins is black with small white dots.

As the points grow fade to brown. On the head are dark eyes and a mouth with a suction cup and a scraper. There are numerous processes.

The fins of young stellate catfish with white edging, which tarnishes with age.

Star Antsistrusy – peaceful and shy soma, preferring a nightlife. During the day, uncommunicative fish hide in shelters, they can freeze in one place for hours.

Well masked. Skirmishes are inside the view.

Newly acquired individuals are fearful, but, having become accustomed, they are more often shown from the shelter and take food in daylight.

Antsistrovy catfish lives on average 10 years.

Starfish catfish unpretentious, survives with wide ranges of temperature and water hardness. You can recommend the fish to responsible newcomers who will monitor the cleanliness of the soil and water.

On one star Ancistrus enough 50-liter aquarium. For two individuals, 200 liters is best to prevent skirmishes.

Optimal contain male and 2 females. Place the snag, which will serve as a source of useful supplements. Wood plays an important role in the digestion of fish.

Ancistrus gnaws nutrients from the surface of the sludge. Neglect of this advice will lead to diseases of the fish. Other shelters are needed, among which the star catfish will hide:

  • grottoes;
  • caves;
  • heaps of stones.
  • L404 tank again with l404 and L181 juvies leaving caves all the time. # l404 # l181 #hypancistrus #ancistrus #starlightpleco #pleco #countrys Post by Carl Dutton (@countryside_aquatics) on Oct. 1, 2018 at 8:54 am PDT

    Weekly change a quarter of the volume of water to fresh and clean the ground with a siphon.

    Many plants are not needed, but a few plant shelters are desirable. The ratio of star catfish to plants is different. Sometimes ancistrus damage delicate plants, especially echinodorus and lemongrass, even if the diet includes a sufficient amount of herbal supplements.

    In some cases, the fish are kept in herbalists, where the plants remain intact. Fix the roots, crushing them with a stone or attaching the plant to the bark, then the catfish does not dig them. For content with ancistrus fit:

  • Anubias;
  • vallisneria;
  • java moss;
  • kladofora;
  • duckweed.
  • Place pebbles or gravel on the bottom. You can mix the stones with sand.

    Make sure the stones have no sharp corners. Boil the soil before placing it in the aquarium.

    For the full life of the fish will need:

    Provide antsistrusam aeration and filtration. Heating of the aquarium is necessary at low temperatures indoors.

    If there are light-loving plants in the aquarium, make sure that they have enough light. Ancistrus is comfortable with dim diffused light.

    Feed star catfish in the evening or at night with sinking vegetable food:

  • cucumbers;
  • squash;
  • granules with spirulina;
  • spinach;
  • peas;
  • carrots.
  • Sometimes feed antsistrus live food in an amount of not more than 20% of the total diet. Catfish eats the remnants of feed of other fish.

    Follow the feeding process: the feed must necessarily sink, you can attach a load to it.

    Star Ancistrus is compatible with non-aggressive neighbors:

  • iris iris;
  • swordtails;
  • danios;
  • parrot fish;
  • barbs;
  • scalars;
  • gourami
  • Familiarize yourself with the required water parameters for each species and create conditions under which it will be comfortable for all inhabitants of the aquarium. Too small fish star antsistrus swallow because of the natural reflex.

    Star antsistrusy – caring parents, do not eat deferred caviar and fry. Spawning occurs in a common or separate aquarium.

    Stimulate spawning by frequent water changes and a gradual decrease in temperature to 20 degrees. Equip the aquarium with ceramic tubes with a diameter of 4–5 cm, in which the fish will put the laying.

    Determining the sex of a star catfish is easy:

  • males are more elongated and larger than females;
  • the belly of females is fuller;
  • a mustache grows in front of the male’s head (at the age of 2 years);
  • males have a pointed face;
  • the female has fewer processes on the head; they are located closer to the edge of the lip.
  • Sexual maturity in stellate fish occurs at 8–12 months, the male chooses a place for spawning and clears it of pollution and algae. When the shelter is ready, the male invites the female. The female lays 50–200 eggs of pinkish-orange color.

    After spurring, the female can be deposited. The male takes care of laying, fanning the fins and removing the barren eggs.

    Often, the male stops feeding during the breeding season. Incubation time up to 10 days.

    After the hatching of the offspring, expel the male, since from that moment he stops to take care of the offspring.

    Maintain stable water parameters and change water a couple of times a week. At 1.5 months, the fry can be relocated to adults. Feed small catfish on the 3-4 day of life with nauplii of Artemia or Cyclops

    Serve shredded adult catfish feeds later. Diversify the diet of live food.

    Before serving, wash and treat food with methylene blue or by freezing it. Put a small snag or boiled coconut shells for an hour for the growing fish to gnaw them.

    Star-catfish have strong immunity. When water is polluted, the inhabitants of the aquarium are subject to:

  • Ichthyophthyriosis The disease is known as “semolina”. White growths appear on the body, the pet loses its appetite and does not leave the shelter. Treat the disease with drugs from a pet shop based on copper sulphate or malachite green. Carefully read the instructions, because an excess of the drug is dangerous for aquarium inhabitants.
  • Oxygen starvation. Hypoxia often occurs at high temperatures. Cool the water and increase the aeration. Another reason for the lack of oxygen – overpopulation of the aquarium.
  • Poisoning. Excess nitrite and ammonia provokes poisoning in Ancistrus. For prevention, check the water tests for the content of nitrogen compounds. Replace up to 40% water. Add air conditioners to neutralize hazardous substances and enhance aeration.
  • Oodiniumosis. Another name is velvet rust. If you notice that the fish is scratching about the scenery, it is shaking, the skin is covered with a yellowish bloom, increase the temperature of the water and pour copper sulfate into the aquarium, according to the instructions. Do not turn off aeration during treatment.
  • Star-like inhabitants of the aquarium lead aquarists to delight. Breeders appreciate the fish for their sluggishness and unique appearance.

    Many star Ancistrus helped in the fight against algae.

    Sold different color variations, different from each other in tiny details. The price depends on the size of star Ancistrus.

    Size, cmprice, rub.
    Until 3200–330
    3-5330–700
    5–6700–990
    6–9990–2100

    Star antsistrus – a combination of unpretentious care and unusual appearance. Fish does not require expensive feed and is well compatible with others.

    It is smaller than common antsistrus, so it does not need a lot of free space. Plus to this catfish – orderly aquarium.

    Antsistrus removes algae from the glasses and decorations and eats the fallen particles to the bottom of the forage, thereby providing itself with food. The downside is the size of the catfish and the likelihood that it will spoil the plants.
