Somik speckled – Content, description and breeding

Hello, friends. Glad to see you again on the blog and I want to share with you a new post in which I will, at the request of the reader, talk about such an interesting and popular aquarium fish as speckled catfish. I already wrote for Ivan a couple of articles at his request, and now he turned to me again.

You can get acquainted with the two previous entries on this and this links.

Speckled catfish are the most common representatives of a very impressive kind of armored catfish which people plant in domestic aquariums. Day after day, these laborers run along the aquarium soil in search of something tasty.

They can eat picked up uneaten food or very nutritious worms (in case of living in the open air).

Spotted catfish in Osonovo live in shallow waters in coastal areas, where there is not so much flow and soft, silty soil in which you can dig deeper in search of food. These fish come from the basin of La Plata in South America.

Also, these workers can be found in small lakes where the depth does not exceed half a meter, or in non-dried puddles after large river flooding.

The speckled catfish have a short body with a convex back and a flat belly. On the body there is a large number of bone plates that lean on each other like tiles on the roof of their house. Thanks to such armor, catfish belong to armored ones.

The female from the male can be distinguished primarily on the dorsal fin: in females the fin is short and slightly rounded, while in the male the fin is elongated and sharp.

The most common color of these catfish is considered greyish-olive, and from the side and on the covers of the gills, you can see a metallic sheen. The abdomen has a yellowish tinge, and the back is dark. There are fanciful specks on the fins and throughout the body.

The mouth apparatus of the catfish has two antennae, thanks to which the fish is looking for food in muddy water.

As in most cases, female speckled catfish grow larger than males, and sometimes even a couple of times can exceed the size of the male. Usually, males grow to 5 centimeters in length, and females are 8–9 centimeters.

I plan in the near future to write a post about the most unpretentious fish, as this question often sounds on aquarium forums. So, what am I carrying this for?

Yes, just speckled catfish can rightfully occupy the first place in the list of unpretentious aquarium fish. Catfish can survive in critical temperature conditions: 2-35 degrees. Just do not make such O_O big eyes, I was not mistaken :).

In addition, this aquarium fish will feel good in dirty old and muddy water and will burst everything that is edible for it.

Thanks to an interesting method of breathing – intestinal, the fish will be able to survive even in water that is not rich in oxygen. Only in this case the fish have to float to the surface and inhale air, while oxygen will be produced in the large intestine of the fish.

However, these catfish have a feature of constantly periodically floating up to the surface and inhaling, and then back to the bottom. But this does not mean the lack of oxygen in the water, it’s kind of a joke about them. Maybe in order not to forget how to breathe differently 🙂

Although the fish is not demanding to the conditions of detention, it is better not to check it for survival. Just create optimal conditions and let yourself enjoy life.

To contain speckled catfish, you have enough and 40-liter aquarium. It is advisable to select neighbors for the fish of the peaceful, such as swordtails or neons.

I do not recommend the girinohaylusov, since both fish are lovers of roaming along the bottom, which can lead to a clarification of relations in terms of territory.

The water temperature should be not lower than 18 degrees, but not higher than 28. The summer time of the year can be an exception, when you want it or not, and the water temperature in the aquarium rises to 34 degrees. It is not recommended to keep these fish in slightly brackish water, so if you decided to make any preventive procedures with other inhabitants of your aquarium, it is better to plant fish, or to plant fish with which you will carry out these procedures.

Just in salt water, the catfish quickly falls on its side, begins to breathe heavily, which can later lead to the death of the fish if it is not placed in another container with fresh fresh water.

Although fish and night scouts, but still lovers sit in dense thickets of aquarium plants. Therefore, before buying these fish, take care of creating plant shelters (you can plant a bush of cryptocoryne, wallisneria and alternantera next to it). Plus do not forget about the stones and snags.

Try to create an interesting design for your aquarium, so that your eye will be happy and its inhabitants will be comfortable.

Now I want to talk a little about the ground. The soil in the aquarium should be small, since large catfish pellets can not shovel.

But get ready for the fact that when the catfish will rummage in the substrate in search of food, they can decently raise the turbidity from the bottom. To prevent such moments from occurring, aquarists decided to use small pebbles that the fish could not move.

However, I do not think this approach is correct, maybe someone will not agree with me, I will be glad to discuss this point in the comments.

Just catfish will feel in such a ground is not very comfortable, plus everything else, all the dirt will fall between the granules of the soil and rot there. And this is extra organic matter and food for algae, which are sometimes hard to overcome. Better to take the soil for less, the filter for more powerful and everyone will be pretty.

Just wash it regularly and all matters.

The speckled catfish can, in principle, feed on any kind of food, however, the best is the bloodworm and the tubule. Do not forget also to feed the fish with special bottom feeds in the form of tablets and granules, which will fall to the bottom, where catfish will crack.

Since such food quickly sinks, the rest of the fish practically don’t touch it, which is in the hands of our catfish. Fewer yummy competitors.

In principle, breeding speckled catfish from a novice aquarist will not be labor. Sometimes even beginners are advised to tame their hand in breeding fish on these representatives of aquarium animals.

As a breeding ground, you can take a container with a volume of at least 10 liters, but it is better that there was a spawning under 50 liters. Thus, you will kill two birds with one stone: it will be a spawning at the same time and a nursery aquarium where the future generation will grow up.

The stimulus for spawning speckled catfish can be several factors:

– lowering the water temperature by a few degrees;

– enhanced aquas aeration;

– regular replacement of fresh cold water.

Soil can be used, but you can not use. It is better to take a bush dwarf Anubias, press it with a stone. Before spawning, spawning is placed near the window, thanks to which catfish will be stimulated to spawn with the rays of the morning sun.

A couple of catfish in spawning placed in the evening. If you are lucky, the fish will spawn for 1 day, and if you are not lucky, leave a couple for another couple of days, let them do their job.

For the duration, spawning lasts 3-4 hours. From the beginning of spawning, the male begins to drive the female across the bank, and then the lady collects milk in her mouth and fertilizes the eggs and attaches her to the illuminated wall of the aquarium. And the cycle repeats again.

During one spawning, the female can fertilize a couple of hundred eggs, and she can spawn again in a week.

When the eggs are swept away and fertilized, maintain the temperature in the spawning aquarium 24 degrees during the week. The incubation period is large, therefore, before spawning speckled catfish, you should buy yourself some anti-fungal drug before spawning. Just for a week, a fungus begins to appear on the calf, and if you want to preserve future offspring, it is better to use antifungal agents.

I heard about one tricky trick when breeding krapchatik. Experienced aquarists, in order not to use anti-fungal drugs, increase the temperature of the water in the aquarium to 28 degrees, which helps to reduce the incubation period.

And as soon as the fry are born, the temperature gradually returns to its original elevation.

Youngsters from krapchatik are rather large, that is why there are no problems with the selection of food. You can pour as a powder for fry, mashed dry food that you give to adult fish. By the way, you can also add to the diet Artemia and finely chop pipemaker.

In addition, it is very convenient to give tablets for catfish. They become limp with time and little things can easily be disposed of later. If you feed the younger generation well, regularly change the water, aerate it well, then by the month of their life the fry can grow up to 1 centimeter in length.

Capable of reproduction speckled catfish They become eight months old, and live for a maximum of 8 years, which is, in principle, a decent period.

I have everything on it, maybe someone doesn’t agree with what was said, do not spit at the monitor, write threatening letters and so on) Better write an adequate comment on the article and we will communicate with you over a cup of tea and discuss what’s what: ) Do not forget to subscribe to blog updates, because in a couple of days the second part of the article about friends of aquarium plants will be released. With the first part you can find here.

All, all bye!

P.S. The joke of the day:

– The wedding night was – shake! The whole apartment went shaking!

– And who first said: “Enough, I can not anymore!”?
