Hello, friends! Today we will talk and grind the bones of a small fish called Tarakatum, the birthplace of which is considered the island of Trinidad and South America.
When kept in a large aquarium, catfish tarakatum can grow up to 18 centimeters in length. Because of its prevalence in nature, the fish has a bunch of ecotypes, differing from each other in body shape and color.
The whole body of the catfish tarakatum is covered with white spots. The male differs from the female in that it differs in the first ray on the pectoral fin, which passes into a powerful bone spike with teeth.
When the spawning period comes, the male builds a large nest of foam under the plants that float on the surface of the reservoir. In aquarium conditions, these plants can be replaced with plastic bowls, upside down.
For one spawning, a female taracatum can throw out about 1000 eggs. When spawning is completed, an inverted bowl with sticky caviar must be transferred to the spawning pool, which should have the following water parameters: temperature – 24 °, pH – 6.5-7.0, dKH – up to 2 °.
Pre-tint the water in the spawning pool with methylene blue. In 4-5 days, larvae with developed fins and antennae will appear from the eggs.
Two days after the birth, the larvae turn into fry, which are fed at the beginning of Artemia. Youngsters are afraid of the light and are constantly looking for shelter in the form of pots, in which I would advise you to make many small holes.
Som tarakatum is considered a peaceful nocturnal fish. He loves to stir up the water digging in the ground. Tarakatum requires large enough aquariums with dim lighting and a decent amount of shelter.
Just do not forget to pritenyat sites of the day. If you do not want to throw pots and other ceramics into the aquarium, you can create shelters with the help of lianas roots or steep and interesting snags.
The water temperature in an aquarium with taracatums should be in the range of 20-24 ° C. Tarakatum is a large fish that can even lift up to 25 centimeters and weighs 350 grams. The body of a tarakatum looks like a roller with a thick base of the tail, smoothly turning into the tail fin itself.
The skull fish is quite powerful; there are long whiskers in the corners of the mouth and upper lip.
You will not be able to breed and maintain tarakatums of labor, even if you are not an experienced aquarist. It can even be classified as unpretentious aquarium fish, although here I can slightly bend the stick.
But still, fact is fact. In order to not dig the ground, the substrate must be large, as for astronotus.
If you neglect this moment, then the Tarakatum without a problem will tear up all your planted aquarium plants.
There were even such cases that a few hours spent hoplastiches in an aquarium with cryptocorynes, vallysneria and ferns, led to the fact that all the grass is floating on the surface of the aquarium. But despite such negative moments, Tarakatum are considered one of the most interesting bottom aquarium fish.
It is bad that the fish is nocturnal and it is difficult to detect it actively during the day. In order for your hoplotherns in the home aquarium to be comfortable, the bank must be 100 liters minimum with a large bottom area.
In addition to coarse soil, you will have to find powerful aquarium plants with a well-developed root system, put a lot of bark, grottoes and caves into the aquarium. It is desirable also to float broadleaf plants on the surface. Take care of more powerful filtration and aeration of the aquarium, as in nature tarakatums prefer oxygenated water and flow.
In addition to the appendage still in the aquarium plants that live in the water column.
I want to draw your attention to the fact that catfish Tarakatum loves to jump from the aquarium. Rather, jump is not in the literal sense, although it depends on how the bank is protected on the surface. Hoploternum lovers to sit quietly at the bottom of the aquarium and sharply push up to take a breath of air, and then again to return home.
Therefore, I recommend you to get cover glass and put it on top of a jar, otherwise it will collect your soms on the floor near the pedestals. Practically everyone eats Hoplosternums, however, like most of their relatives, they prefer animal feed.
That’s all. Thanks for attention!
