Snake fish: description, care and maintenance of aquarium fish

Already one name – Calamoichthys calabaricus (Kalamoiht) – gives this aquarium fish a kind of mystery. Her snake-like body beautifully twists around the plants and moves around the aquarium, as if in some unusual dance, but at the same time the snake-fish is rather shy and tries to hide behind pebbles or algae at the slightest rustle.

Snake fish is fearful, afraid of any rustling

Kalamoiht Kalabarsky is one of the most popular and popular types of aquarium fish. This exotic beauty lives in warm reservoirs with a slow current and fresh water. It is found mainly in West Africa.

Due to the unusual structure of the respiratory system this fish is able to live even in water with low oxygen content, and moreover, it can be outside water, since its lung apparatus is adapted to absorb atmospheric oxygen.

Kalamoicht has an elongated snake-like torso, covered with scales, hence the name. The thickest part of the body has a diameter of about 1.5 cm.

The color is yellowish with a brown tint, but there are milky-brown individuals. On an angular head, resembling a flattened triangle, there is a large, toothy mouth and small antennae responsible for touch.

On the upper line of the body are well visible spikes, the number of which varies from 8 to 15 pieces. The ventral fins are located on the tail part or are completely absent.

The size of the calamoich can reach 40 cm. Females are usually slightly larger than males.

The aquarium fish, which looks like a snake, is very curious, has a rather peaceful disposition. Despite its appearance, it can frighten even the smallest inhabitants of an artificial reservoir.

It is chosen from shelter mainly at night, but it can be active in the daytime, if you just feed it.

Aquarium fish of medium size are ideal as neighbors for the kalamoihtu. Snake fish cannot live near neons, guppies and other mobile fish that can destroy all food in seconds.

In addition, they can be eaten by the snake themselves.

Plants planted in an artificial reservoir need additional strengthening, since Kalamoiht, living on the bottom, loves to dig in the ground, because of which the root system suffers a lot. Use only soft soil, as aquarium snakes like to dig in it and in case of unsuccessful choice can damage scales. The best option would be fine smooth gravel or sand.

At the bottom of the aquarium, you can land aponogeton, anubias or vallisneria.

Main content requirements:

  1. The tank should have a volume of at least 100 liters and a tight lid.
  2. The average water temperature is 25 degrees, its hardness should be from 2 to 17, the acidity – 6.1–7.6.
  3. A prerequisite is the presence of many grottoes, stones and other shelters – the fish should feel safe.

At the same time, it is necessary to monitor the tightness of the lid and eliminate the cracks in time. Kalamoihty very curious and at the first opportunity to try to escape.

They are able to travel long distances by land, but they cannot be without water for a long time. Avoid sudden fluctuations in hydrochemical parameters of water.

In case of urgent need to replace the fluid, you must use special air conditioners that will help you quickly restore the necessary indicators.. The most popular of them are the following:

  • Stresscoat;
  • Biotopol;
  • Akklimol.

Snake fish prefers live protein feed

Kalamoihty, unlike most other species of fish, have a magnificent sense of smell. In food, they prefer live and rich protein feed.

For example, they can be given pieces of frozen food or shrimp, fish fillets, earth or small worms, Artemia, squid, bloodworms.

Kalamoihty are very slow, so it is recommended to feed them separately from the rest of the fish 10−15 minutes after the food was in the aquarium. During this time, the snake will feel the presence of food and will get out of its shelter, or you can put a treat in front of the calamoiht.

Young animals are fed 5−6 times a day, adult fish – 2−3 times.
