Hello dear readers! Siamese seaweed is common in Southeast Asia in rivers and streams. Also this aquarium fish can be seen on the Malay Peninsula and Thailand.
Algae-eater got to the territory of Europe in 1962. Ten years later, aquarists realized that this aquarium attendant was very useful in dealing with unsigned guests.
Due to its unique ability to mercilessly eat algae in aquariums, even beginners try to get this aquarium fish in every possible way. To date, the Siamese guest has a second name – the flying fox.
In Siamese algae, an elongated body, compressed near the caudal fin. The body color is gray-brown, and a black stripe runs along its entire length. The belly of the fish is gray-silver and the back is dark.
Each scale has a black border. This border is particularly noticeable against the background of a horizontal black stripe. Fins are dull or transparent at all.
The upper lip of the fish has a V-shape with a small mustache, which look forward with its fringe. If the fish is at rest, the whiskers are pressed to the cheeks.
Females are slightly larger than males. Often in adult females there is a change in the color of the lips to red or orange.
It happens that even the fins change their color to a yellowish hue, and the dorsal fin darkens significantly. But these qualities are inherent in adult fish.
Young individuals such color transformation is not inherent. Under natural conditions, Siamese seaweed grows up to 16 centimeters in length, and rarely exceeds 14 centimeters in aquariums.
The greatest size of a fish comes at two years of age, and can live in captivity up to 10 years.
Flying fox among aquarists is famous for its tireless algae fighter. Fish passionately eats almost any plantation of lower plants with decorative elements, the walls of the aquarium, zagryag, stones and leaves of plants.
It is best eaten by algae young individuals, whose body length does not exceed 7 centimeters. While other orderlies in an aquarium who eat algae, such as antsistrus and girinoheylus, do not eat hard algae and nervously smoke to the side, algae doesn’t shy away with such things.
The Siamese fox does not even ruin the consumption of such well-known algae as black beard and Vietnamese. But an aquarist should know that during the residence of a fish with other aquatic organisms (moth, neon, scalar), an algae species may lose interest in algae and it may begin to eat the traditional food that you give to other fish.
Algae food compared to the other sweepers is famous for its rather nasty temper, which manifests itself in the form of aggression towards its neighbors. However, in most cases, it is still a peaceful inhabitant of the underwater garden.
As the fish matures, its body is larger and stronger. If there are two-colored labo or clown fighting in your tank, a real war for territory can begin between the algae and these fish.
The fish do not cause harm to their relatives during territorial skirmishes. It is worth noting that, due to their active lifestyle, Siamese algae sometimes contribute to relieving stress in other fish, such as dwarf cichlids.
For an adult algae you need a large aquarium, preferably from 100 liters, with a large number of aquarium plants and all sorts of shelters. At the slightest danger, the fish rapidly disappears in the grass.
Another interesting feature of the fish – his posture for the rest. Since the Siamese is not well developed swim bladder, when the fish is resting, it does not lie on the belly. The body of the fish is in a semi-suspended state of the anal and caudal fins, and at the same time the pectoral fins never touch the bottom or leaves of plants.
Young animals prefer to rest on plants, and adults like to hang around the bottom and on low-growing plants, for example, some species of cryptocoryne.
The composition of the aquarium water fish is not demanding, but it is in need of strong aeration and powerful filtration. Since algae-eaters live in nature in fast creeks and streams, they have a natural need for oxygen-rich water.
If the fish lives in your tank and there are stagnant zones in it, this will immediately affect their well-being. For this reason, it is recommended to create a small flow of water using filters. The temperature of the water in the aqua with a Siamese fox should be between 23-29 degrees, the acidity is 6.2-8 pH, the hardness is 5-20 dH.
As mentioned above, be sure to organize powerful aeration and filtration. It is also desirable to replace every week 1/3 of the water from the total.
Unfortunately, the Siamese algae outside the natural environment does not reproduce. Most likely, this is due to the special conditions required in running water and as yet unknown. This is now impossible to achieve in aquariums.
Therefore, all the fish come to us in stores exclusively from supplying countries, where these amazing aquarium fish are found.
