Shubunkin’s aquarium fish: photos, keeping and feeding, breeding and breeding

Shubunkin (Carassius gibelio forma auratus) – a fish bred in Japan, sometimes also called a sibunkin or calico. In Shubunkin’s peace-loving nature, these pets get along perfectly with other members of their own species, but it’s better not to contain them with hyperactive or predatory fish.

The shubunkin’s scales are very delicate, almost transparent, the fins are rather long. You can see that this fish has an elongated body, on the sides it is slightly compressed. Caudal fin bifurcated, its size is quite large.

The main advantage of this fish can be considered a bright multi-colored color of blue, red, yellow and white. Full color is manifested only at one year old. Individuals whose colors are dominated by blue-violet and bluish shades are most appreciated.

Fish grow up to 16 centimeters.

The volume of the aquarium for shubunkin should be at least 50 liters, it is desirable to contain fish in flocks, from 6 to 8 individuals. In a 15-liter aquarium, you can keep a couple of fish.

Soil is preferable to large – it can be pebbles or coarse sand, the fish love to scatter it. Choose large-leaved plants, since shubunkins can gnaw them, the best choice is algae with hard leaves and a good root system, it can be elodea, sagittary, vallyssneria. Temperature range – 18-23 degrees, pH – 5.0-8.0, rigidity – up to 18.

The tank should have aeration and filtration, regularly need to change part of the water, the lighting is bright. You can feed your pets in the morning and evening, plant and animal feed.

Shubunkin reaches sexual maturity at the age of 3 years. For the female and a pair of males, they take a spawn, with a volume of 50 liters, with fresh water, gradually raise the temperature to stimulate spawning.

Spawning lasts several hours, the female rushes around the aquarium, laying eggs, and the males fertilize them. Goldfish are deposited after spawning, after 5-6 days the fry appear, they are fed with “live dust”, and later transferred to specialized feed.
