Shrimp in a fish tank

maintenance, care, compatibility

If an aquarium with its first inhabitants appeared under your roof, then it is safe to say that soon you will want to make a small underwater world richer. Amazing fish, small mollusks and crustaceans are quite familiar to the inhabitants of the domestic reservoir. For those who like to surprise, we recommend settling shrimps in an aquarium with fish.

The richness of species, as well as the beauty of underwater plants will allow you to create a real garden under water.

Before completely new organisms will master the space, it is important to take care of the neighbors. Not all the fish will be happy to meet the new inhabitants, and some will perceive the shrimp as a “tasty addition” to the feed.

If in the familiar environment shrimps are able to hide from predators due to the color of their shell, then they are absolutely not protected in the aquarium. Often, decorative shrimps of bright colors are planted in the home pond: blue, yellow, red.

Big Fish will scare away your new wards. Therefore, shrimp often try to dig into the sand or go to the nightlife. As a result, bright crustaceans may lose their color.

Each fish that is larger in size for shrimp automatically becomes a threat to new inhabitants. Of particular danger are the swordtails, cockerels, platies, goldfish and others that are popular among aquarists.

Therefore, the main task for fans of underwater fraternity to pick up shrimp in the aquarium with fish, given the compatibility of species.

When buying colorful toddlers for an aquarium, it is important to take into account with what fish the shrimps get on. This approach will create a comfortable environment for all inhabitants without any particular risks.

  1. White pearl – calm, peaceful shrimp, thanks to the transparency and lightness almost imperceptible in the water. The threat to small inhabitants will be aggressive fish. Crustaceans are at risk especially during molting. For comfortable conditions, it is important to provide sufficient presence of algae, moss, and other plants. This species prefers to be in the pack. It is recommended to settle them in a new house in the amount of 10 individuals.
  2. Yellow pearl – Golden crustacean, which is absolutely not picky to the environment. Perfectly gets on with a small fish and the relatives of the small sizes. For them it is important to pick up a sufficient amount of moss, plants. When there is a shortage of feed for crustaceans, algae can be used as food. Baby shrimp eat underwater greens. For the solar shrimp in the aquarium, keeping with the following species of fish: danios, guppies and other harmless creatures.
  3. Blue tiger – a completely young type of ornamental shrimp, which have a beautiful rich blue color. The presence of snags, moss, pebbles, a sufficient amount of greenery will allow you to create the perfect home for crustaceans. It is better to settle the “blue tigers” in a separate aquarium.
  4. Cherry shrimp or, as they are also called, shrimp-cherries are quite a popular resident of domestic ponds. They get along well with the peaceful representatives of the underwater gang: guppies, danios, micro-collections. Cherry is very shy and try to quickly escape from possible danger. Permanent movement through the tank exhausts the shrimp.

We create comfortable conditions

Before settling shrimps, remember that sharing them with fish requires a special approach, namely creating a comfortable and safe environment for crustacean babies.

  1. In the aquarium there should be enough sand, plants, stones so that the crustaceans have enough space to hide.
  2. Try to feed for the new inhabitants fell between the plants. Fish will not go there, and shrimp without any risk will be able to eat.
  3. Neighborhood fish should be smaller than shrimp.
  4. Do not run new pets into the aquarium right away. If there is such an opportunity, observe the crustaceans, whether fish are hunting for them.

In this case, crustaceans act as nurses of a domestic artificial reservoir. The fact is that aquarium fish always leave quite a lot of waste, the lion’s share of which are food remains, pieces of bitten vegetation.

It is just this waste that serves as an excellent food for shrimps crawling around the aquarium. By the way, if the fish died for some reason, then nimble orderlies will eat it pretty quickly.

But it is better to remove it immediately from the reservoir.

From a nutritional point of view, a common aquarium is a real shrimp expanse! In this situation, they need only a little feeding in such a way that uneaten “products” do not remain at the bottom and in the water column.

You can gradually give, for example, small pieces of pre-scalded zucchini, spinach, pumpkin and cucumbers, which shrivochki are very fond of. In addition, these products retain their nutritional properties and form in water for a long time, without polluting the environment.

Giving extra food should be no more than 2-3 times a week, carefully monitoring that there are no uneaten “products” left in the aquarium. Leftovers should be cleaned.

Cherry Shrimp – Cherry: content, compatibility, reproduction, photo-video, description.

The big stress for these animals is moving to a new tank. Therefore, if you purchased cherries, you need to transfer them to the water of your aquarium very gradually, for at least an hour, first dropping a bag with them into the aquarium and leveling the temperature, and then gradually adding water from their new home to the package of their native water.

When shipped in a bag of cherries, it is imperative to place a bunch of moss or a sprig of small-leaved plants so that the shrimps can cling to them and are not affected by shaking.

In the first minutes after the cherries are in the new aquarium, they usually behave very actively, swim in all layers of water. But this is more of a panic than the joy of housewarming.

In half an hour, they will all hide in the thickets of plants, behind pebbles and under seashells, where they will spend the next 2-3 days.

The fact is that after stress and changes in conditions, the shrimp shed and, until they have hardened a new shell, try to keep in safe shelters. But it will be quite a bit of time, and they will crawl out into the light again and begin to frantically busy all over the whole aquarium.

Cherries are omnivores, and they eat almost any kind of food they offer. It is difficult to name what they refuse.

Overfeeding is best avoided – you can get a massive case. If there are fish in the aquarium, you do not need to give the shrimp food specifically – they will pick up crumbs after the fish.

When keeping a cherry in a monoculture, it is optimal to feed once every other day.

If shrimps already live in the aquarium, then new individuals should be settled in it, of course, after quarantine.
However, the complexity of keeping shrimp in temporary isolation is that they will not fit the usual empty sanitary container.

In quarantine should be the substrate, shelter, living plants.

In addition, it should be noted that at the end of the quarantine, when transferring cherries to a permanent aquarium, they will again have stress, they will start shedding, samochki will lose caviar. Therefore, if there are no other types of shrimp in a permanent aquarium, and new copies are purchased from a reliable vendor, quarantine can sometimes be neglected.

Cherry Shrimp – Cherry: content, compatibility, reproduction, photo-video review

Water parameters: temperature: 14–29 ° C, pH 6.5 – 8.0, kH 3 – 10;
Lifespan: 1-2 years;
Body length: up to 4cm;
Colors: red;
Nutrition: omnivorous;

Red Cherry Shrimp, Cherry Shrimp, Cherry Red Shrimp and RCS in abbreviation (hereinafter referred to as Cherry Shrimp) is complex in structure, brightly colored in brilliant red, a peaceful representative of a freshwater aquarium, and undoubtedly one of the most popular shrimps in the world , due to its relatively easy ability to be fruitful, as well as the ability to survive with different parameters of water. Many lovers of shrimp begin with this species, due to the ability to multiply well and not demanding to the habitat.

Gaining experience in the content of Cherry Shrimp, shrimp lovers move on to the content of more demanding types of shrimp, such as Tiger Shrimp and Red Crystal Shrimp.

Cherry or Cherry Shrimp – selective shrimp bred in Germany, obtained during the long crossing of wild shrimp Neocaridina Heteropoda.

An aquarium with shrimps of this type must be well planted with plants, on which Cherry Shrimps spend a lot of their time just to sit, and be sure to have shelters in which they hide for protection, especially after molting.

Like all invertebrates, Cherry Shrimps are sensitive to copper, so copper-based medicines should not be used in an aquarium with decorative invertebrates. On the counters of pet stores, you can find air conditioners that remove or neutralize copper, lead, and other metals from tap water, making it absolutely safe for shrimp.

It is worth mentioning that the Cherry Shrimp responds well to the color of the substrate, so if the shrimps are located in an aquarium with a light substrate, they will become pale, or even completely transparent. But on the substrate of a dark color, the shrimp become intensely red.

The color intensity of these invertebrates depends on the diversity of the diet.

Cherry shrimp compatibility with fish and shrimps

When kept in an aquarium, Cherry Shrimps easily become a living target for nearby fish. Even a small fish will wake up for hours to pursue them to eat. Therefore, the neighbors should choose with extreme caution.

Small, non-aggressive fish such as Rasbora Harlequin, Blue Neon, Red Neon, Dwarf Corydoras, Otozincles, Dwarf Gourami and some Killy species can become good neighbors for adult Cherry Shrimp. However, young shrimp are likely to be eaten by any fish, with the exception of Otozincles and some other herbivorous fish.

It is very easy to feed Cherry shrimp, as they accept virtually any kind of food made for shrimp or fish: blanched spinach, zucchini, seaweed, shrimp granules, fish flakes, bloodworms and much more. In a word – Cherry is not picky about any food.

It is worth paying attention to the period of feeding, which is a good indicator of health. If shrimps are eaten in packs, then this is a good sign, as those who are dissatisfied with food are constantly hiding.
Feed better once a day. The amount of feed needed for shrimp should be eaten within a maximum of 2-3 hours.

Excess feed adversely affects shrimp. Overfeeding can lead to their death, as well as affect the quality characteristics of the water in the aquarium. Remember that shrimp are garbage collectors in the wild.

They eat everything they find within 24 hours 7 days a week. When kept in an aquarium, it is recommended not to feed one or even two days a week.

Aquarium Shrimp Feeding, Shrimp Feed Overview

Feeding aquarium shrimp,

shrimp feed review

More and more attention is growing towards these small, multi-fingered and mustached inhabitants of freshwater aquariums. And, if previously they were in the background, as a kind of addition to the overall picture, with the popularization of nano aquariums, shrimps became the main actors, to which all attention is riveted.

The article is dedicated to feeding small freshwater shrimp (2-3 cm long), such as cherry and crystals. Feeding of filter feeders, omano shrimp and macrobrachia is slightly different.

Shrimp, by nature, eats almost everything. In their native conditions, they eat, as a rule, fallen leaves, algae, microorganisms and everything that comes up.

Once in the aquarium, the shrimp also has everything. This is both good and bad at the same time.

It is worth noting that feeding shrimp variably:

1st option: when shrimp live with other fish.

Option 2: when they live separately.

Feeding in an aquarium with fish. In this case, the shrimp performs the role of a medic, picking up all the food that the fish did not eat.

In addition, it is well eats up algae on plants and glass, “wilted” plants, etc., thereby doing an indispensable service to the owner. She will not refuse to eat and dead fish, and makes it much faster than the snail.

However, for the safety of the aquarium, it is better to take the dead fish. In such conditions, food for shrimp is plenty and it is very diverse.

You can feed it only a little, because with an increase in food, it can abandon its other functions, the remains will rot and become dangerous, both for shrimps and for the aquarium as a whole.

Quite another case – the life of shrimp separately without fish. There are no remains of fish food – the main diet of shrimp.

Of course, they can be fed only to algae, “withered” plants and microorganisms. But such a diet will not give them all the necessary elements for the development, color, molting and gestation of offspring.

The best and easiest option is special feeding. dry food. All of them contain most of the necessary vitamins and beneficial elements, so there is not much difference between them.

The main form of such food is small dry granules, similar to tablets for bottom fish, only they are of such size that a small shrimp can easily take and transfer them. Getting water “pills” swell and become soft.

It should be noted that 2 – 3 of these granules is enough to feed 10 shrimps. Thus, one can of food is sometimes enough for more than a year.

In addition, there are other types of feed for shrimp: liquid, plates, raznorazmerny – for feeding shrimp at different periods of their lives.

Special attention must be paid natural feed, which you can do yourself. On the mnogolapym well go boiled or scalded with boiled water pieces of vegetables, herbs and fruits.

For example: zucchini, carrots, cabbage, pumpkin, spinach. Particularly like shrimp pieces of the liver, live bloodworm and dried daphnia.

Favorite additive are pounded snail coils.

For natural food to sink well to the bottom, it should be wetted with water. Shrimp are unlikely to eat the whole piece of food, …. as soon as the interest in him disappears – it should be taken from the aquarium.

To live plants in the aquarium shrimp are also good. They are very fond of Richia and Limnobius.

If shrimp eat plants too actively, it can be concluded about insufficient feeding.

Given the specific nature of the natural existence of shrimp, it is impossible not to isolate such interesting type, like fallen leaves. Leaves, falling off naturally and getting into the water create a specific environment and water parameters, certain microorganisms and bacteria develop on the leaf.

All this is perfect shrimp. To feed the shrimp dry yellowed leaves of peach, cherry, oak, etc. are suitable.

It should be good to rinse the sheet from dirt, then soak for a while and serve to the table. One or two leaves will be enough for a small shrimp population. When only a skeleton remains from the leaves, it must be taken from the aquarium.

It is important not to forget about safety, because leaves from the street, besides all benefits, can bring various toxic substances. On sale you can find branded dried almond leaves, already prepared for eating.

Feeding place. The best solution to this issue is to choose a single and open place for feeding. So you will kill several birds with one stone: on the one hand, you will always see the approximate number of shrimps and will monitor the population.

On the other hand, it will be clearly seen how quickly they eat this food and when it should be taken. Throwing food into the thickets there is a risk that it will remain unnoticed or inaccessible to shrimps, which as a result will lead to rotting.

Well, and perhaps most importantly, your pets will be visible: feeding them in the foreground in the open area you can admire them and follow their every movement, take pictures, etc.

Frequency and dosing. Shrimps are not eaten as quickly as fish, so food is ground to very small sizes. Shrimp can be fed several times a day.

But the best option to maintain their tone will be feeding somewhere 1 every 1-2 days. In any case, you need to make sure that they all eat up in a few hours.

Thus, they not only will not overeat, but also perform their functions well in cleaning the aquarium from algae. It will not be superfluous to make them fasting days, not feeding them several days every 1-2 months.

This is useful both for them and for the aquarium as a whole. Well, do not be afraid to leave them for 1-2 weeks without food.

Shrimps can last much longer without food than fish, because in fact there is enough food without you in the aquarium itself. In this case, the main thing is to feed them more than usual.

Feeding time – feeds shrimp better at the same time. And not so that they have better digestion, but simply that this process is not spontaneous. A single feeding time is key to avoiding overeating.

It is best to feed – 1 hour after turning on the light, when the shrimp wake up and crawl out of their homes. However, this is not important and depends on your capabilities.

I hope this information is useful to you. I wish your shrimp a good color, regular offspring and long life.

Below is an overview of some types of dry JBL NovoCrabs shrimp feed.

Specially designed feed for crustacean shellfish. It looks like pellets with a diameter of up to 8 mm, which slowly sink in the water during feeding. This feed has a fairly dense structure, and therefore, does not dissolve in water for a long time.

The composition of this feed is different from feed for aquarium fish, because shellfish should receive in the process of feeding a sufficient number of elements necessary to form and maintain their shell cover. Therefore, JBL NovoCrabs includes up to 5% of special wood fibers, designed to ensure the formation of chitinous shells in crayfish, crabs and some species of large shrimp.

For small shrimp, this food is not suitable. For them, JBL produces special food in the form of small granules, which we will discuss below.

JBL NovoCrabs 100 ml, JBL NovoCrabs 250 ml.

JBL NovoPrawn – for shrimp, young crayfish and crabs

These are small pellets in the form of balls with a diameter of about 2-3 mm, sufficiently dense in structure, and therefore do not dissolve in water for a long time, allowing the multi-fingered shrimps to find them in the aquarium and slowly rush. The composition contains a large amount of spirulina, which favorably affects the color scales of shrimps.

In order for the shrimp chitinous cover to form quickly, JBL NovoPrawn feed contains a high proportion of rapidly digestible cellulose.

It is recommended as the main feed for all types of shrimp, as well as for young crayfish and crabs. JBL NovoPrawn 100 ml, JBL NovoPrawn 250 ml.

Tetra Crusta Menu – food intended for shrimps and crayfish

As part of the feed, less attention is paid to the content of cellulose and spirulina, but the focus is on raw materials from the crustaceans themselves – shrimp, artemia, fish meat, as well as additional proteins and minerals are used as raw materials.

One package contains four different types of food in a mixed form – chips, granules, small tablets and sticks, which differ in their composition.

Food is used to feed all types of shrimp and small decorative crayfish. Tetra Crusta Menu 100 ml;

Some experts believe that the optimum for cherries is the content in the shrimp, where only the shrimp and many green plants are present. But in the general aquarium, this type of shrimp will also feel great.

It is important to create the necessary conditions and provide neighbors with whom they have good compatibility. It should not be predatory fish such as cichlids or large individuals.

Even a harmless golden fish is not averse to eat cherries. The thing is that this type of shrimp lacks any protective mechanisms.

Their only salvation is a disguise. And the inconspicuous ancestors of cherries, who live in natural conditions, perfectly use this ability.

But brightly colored cherry or yellow aquarium shrimp does not have such an opportunity. It is easy for the neighbors in the aquarium to catch them, so the content of cherries is possible only with small peace-loving fish.

Perfect compatibility with shrimps with guppies, rasbor, neon, otozinclus, corridor, gourami. All of the above fish should be miniature in size.

And do not forget that even dwarf fish can eat newborn shrimp. Therefore, the compatibility of fry with other fish is zero.
