Shark Balu: maintenance, care, breeding in an aquarium

Hello dear readers! Shark Balu come from Thailand, or rather, is often found everywhere on the islands of Southeast Asia (Sumatra and Klimantan).

The fish prefers to stay in fast-flowing rivulets and streams. I do not know why, but this hydrobiont has a huge number of names: black-necked balantioheylus, silver shark, fire-tailed barb, shark barb.

Aquarists of the former Soviet Union learned about the ball not so long ago, the first time he got to us about 10-15 years ago.

If we draw an analogy, the shark ball is very similar to our river roach. The body of the fish is narrow, its sides are compressed and stretched in length, the eyes are large and the head has a lower position of the mouth.

The body of the fish is covered with fairly large scales of silver color, which shimmers in the light. The fins of the fish are either yellowish or completely transparent.

There is a black edging along the edges of the fins. Females are somewhat larger than males and fuller in the abdomen.

In the young individual you do not distinguish gender in any way! The hydrobiont grows rather quickly and grows about 30-35 centimeters in length.

The maximum lifespan of this fish is about 10 years.

Despite its solid dimensions, the shark ball is considered to be a peace-loving schooling fish. The optimal number of individuals recommended about 6 pieces, but if the volume of your aquarium does not allow to contain such a number of sharks, you can keep a couple of fish.

Balu excellently gets on with large and peace-loving aquarium fish. Basically, all the fish sold for sale are brought from Asia, so they are very shy and subject to stress.

When the aquarium is being cleaned and the fish sees a sharp movement of the aquarist’s hand, it can become frightened and jerk sharply to the side, which sometimes ends with injuries from strikes against the stones or walls of the aquarium.

Basically, the fish got used to the new environment, it needs about a month. In order to successfully contain a shark barb in its aquarium, it requires a capacity of 150 liters, as the content of fish in a smaller aquarium leads to a reduction in the lifetime and growth rate.

The shark ball is quite a jumping fish, so be sure to cover the aquarium with a cover glass. The aquarium is decorated with stones, branched snags and aquarium plants (Anubias, Echinodorus and Vallisneria).

Do not forget to leave enough space for swimming!

The water in the aquarium should meet the following parameters:

  • hardness: 12-15dH;
  • acidity: 6.5-7.5 pH;
  • temperature: 24-27 degrees;
  • filtration and aeration of the aquarium + 30% water changes once a week.

There is a shark ball almost everything: live food, vegetable and dry. Periodically, you will need to change the diet, and in particular to pick up a new dry food. I do not recommend doing serious experiments with food, as it only hurts the fish because of the weakness of the stomach.

For example, you do not need to feed this fish with bloodworms and cheese, since chitinous shells will clog the digestive tract of the fish and cause frustration.

Shark barbs become sexually mature at 2 years of age. Unfortunately, breeding this fish in captivity is very problematic and time consuming.

Basically, aquarists bother about this and simply buy imported fish in stores.

Unfortunately, the video is in Ukrainian, I could not find another one.
