Rules of the maintenance of catfish agamix star

Tropical catfish Agamix star-shaped is a rare member of the carp family. Among ornamental fish carp are widespread, but not agamix. Somica is mainly brought from the wild, as artificial reproduction is a very complicated process.

This circumstance explains why the spectacular and elegant fish is rarely found in pet stores. Som attracts attention with appearance, habits and is able to decorate any aquarium.

Star agamix belongs to the family of Bronyakov catfish.

White-spotted Agamixis, or star-shaped, is known as a singing (grumpy) fish. Somiki do not make throat sounds, but the crackling of bony plates on pectoral fins can be heard at a distance of up to 30 meters.

And also agamiks reproduces sounds, resonating with the help of a swim bladder, sometimes straining or relaxing the muscles of the back. A tropical inhabitant uses sound signals not only during the mating season, but also in order to frighten enemies, which he has quite a lot in the wild.

Agamixis the white-haired is found in the upper reaches of the Amazon. Somica is also caught in the Orinoco River (Venezuela) and some lakes in eastern Brazil, Ecuador, Peru. Agamix is a freshwater predatory fish and feeds on snails, mollusks, distinguished by its gluttony.

It prefers clean, warm water with an average flow rate, refers to the bottom representatives of the aquatic fauna. Sometimes found in swampy areas of lakes.

If the fish experiences a serious lack of oxygen, it rises to the surface to fill the intestinal loops with air.

Som stellate agamixis is active at night, and during the daytime it sleeps in secluded places among the stones, snags, hides in the folds of the soil. Fish for a long time without water.

There are cases when agamixes crawled from a reservoir into a reservoir, using fins that are strong and hard because of bony plates for movement.

The body of agamix black, massive and somewhat flattened on top, gradually tapers from head to tail. All fish, except the tail, is protected by bone plates. The fins covered with prickles, having the same black color as the body, are distinguished by their special hardness.

If the catfish feels danger, then instantly straightens them, becoming like a small porcupine.

On the body of an adult individual there are large yellow specks, which are closer to the tail merge into strips. The spots of young fish are white.

Catfish got its name due to its spectacular coloring. The head is large and corresponds to ¼ parts from the entire body.

The head is decorated with three pairs of black and white whiskers.

Aquarium agamixes reach a length of 10 cm. In the wild, catfish grow to 17 cm.

The life expectancy of a fish with a good content in the aquarium is 12 years.

It is worth noting that agamix stellate in content unpretentious. Organize the conditions under which the fish will be healthy and live a long time, perhaps without much stress.

The optimal volume of aquarium for star catfish is at least 100 liters. With a smaller volume, the fish will slowly grow.

Light should be muffled, as at the bottom of a natural reservoir.

General content options:

  • aquarium with a volume of 100 liters;
  • temperature of water + 25 degrees Celsius;
  • the acidity of the aquatic environment from 6 to 8 units;
  • fresh water, about 8 degrees of hardness;
  • weak current;
  • partial replacement of water is done every 4 days and makes up 15% of the total;
  • the presence of a bottom filter is necessary, since abundant waste is generated as a result of the life of the fish.

As a soil, it is recommended to use a thick layer of specially treated sand or fine gravel. Soil layer must be massive, because catfish love to dig bottom substrate. Grottoes, caverns, snags are necessary to create conditions as close as possible to the natural ones, and to provide shelter for agamix for rest in the daytime.

In the wild, catfish live among the dense aquatic vegetation of the tropics, so the presence of algae in the aquarium makes the life of agamix comfortable.

If there is a need to catch catfish, then you should use a plastic or glass container. Hard fins will get entangled in the net, which will cause concern fish.

In addition, there is a real risk of injury by sharp bone plates.
