The blue dolphin or cichlid is an unusual aquarium fish brought from the African Lake Malawi. Among the representatives there are quite large individuals, at home males grow up to 20 cm in length.

Dolphin, this fish is called for an amazing external resemblance to a mammal. In adulthood, these inhabitants of aquariums on the forehead appears lump of adipose tissue, resembling the head of a dolphin.

Enlarge the similarity of large eyes and protruding lips.

Dolphins have a lean elongated body, slightly flattened on the sides. Fins are short and thin, directed back.

Young fish have a gray-bluish color with a metallic sheen. With age, the shade fades, large dark spots appear on the center of the body and on the tail.

During mating games, the males acquire a bright blue tint, the forehead turns yellow, and transverse dark stripes appear on the body. The sex of the fish can be determined by the colors.

Females differ in more pale color, and also they are smaller in size than males.

In nature, the blue dolphin can reach 25 cm.

The nature of the fish blue dolphin is quite peaceful, but at the same time males get along hard with each other – they begin to fight for territory and females.

It is best to keep in the aquarium one male and several females.

These aquatic inhabitants shy, but at the same time good-natured and peaceful. Many aquarists believe that dolphins have intelligence, get used to the owner and even communicate with him through the walls of the aquarium.

The content of the blue dolphin is not particularly difficult, but it requires compliance with some standards. With proper care, cichlids feel confident and free, inspect their homes with interest and are friendly to each other.

Blue dolphins can’t stand loneliness, therefore, it is best to keep a few fish. The most harmonious will be the union, when there are two females for one male.

This aquatic inhabitant loves freedom, therefore he feels comfortable only in a spacious aquarium. It is best to choose a capacity of 300 liters and more. Cleanliness is a prerequisite for keeping pets.

They like good aeration and enough high water temperature – from 25 to 30 degrees. This is explained by the fact that in Africa, their homeland, fish live in warm lakes.

The fish will feel comfortable under the following conditions:

  • water temperature up to +30 degrees;
  • bright light;
  • Replace a third of the water in the aquarium weekly; it must first be passed through biological filters;
  • alkaline water;
  • good aeration;
  • in the aquarium should be no more than ten individuals.

In the aquarium should be made grottoes and arches, the local inhabitants will explore them with interest. They like to swim around the snags and hide in the caves. Soil is best added from the coarse sand.

The fish of the blue dolphin is not distinguished by aggression, so it normally gets on with other species of aquatic animals. The most harmonious relationships they have with frontozami, African catfish, voile synodontis, aulonocara.

You can run into the aquarium with dolphins labyrinth fish, and catfish, which will clear the bottom.

Dolphins are pretty shy, so may suffer from more aggressive inhabitants aquarium. It is not necessary to place them together with large cichlids, cichlisomes, mbuna and similar species, for example, with haplochromis.

Proper feeding is one of the main points of successful breeding and maintenance of dolphins. Aquarium fish requires both dry and live food. At the same time, it is necessary to take into account the preferences of a certain type of individuals and include more food in their diet.

Nutrition should be balanced and contain proteins and vegetable ingredients.

Crustaceans must be present in the diet of the blue dolphin.

The menu of fish must be present:

  • artemia or the pipeker;
  • frozen feed;
  • various minced meat and concentrates;
  • plant food.

In nature, cichlids are predators, so they can feed on dwarf fish. But such feed should not be given, as it is not always possible to check its quality, and the presence of pathogenic microorganisms provokes the development of putrefactive processes in the aquarium.

Some owners give their pets finely chopped meat or minced meat. But the blue dolphin is an aquarium fish, so there are no enzymes in its body for digesting heavy food.

From such a diet obesity and atrophy may develop.

It is necessary to control the amount of food eaten, as the blue beauties are prone to obesity and can not stop in time.

Successful breeding of fish depends on their health and quality of nutrition. Puberty cichlids reach the age three years old.

A few days before spawning, the male becomes more active, starts digging holes in the ground, or clears out the stone, where the female then deposits yellow oval eggs.

It is impossible to determine the sex of the fry, therefore 8–10 individuals should be acquired immediately, then males and females will be among them. When the fish reach a size of 15 cm, their sex is already visible, so the males are seated in different containers.

During the breeding season, males behave aggressively, and females, on the contrary, are fearful.

For the period of spawning in the aquarium is placed large stone with a smooth surface, where the female will lay eggs. The male fertilizes the eggs, after which the female hides them in the mouth and bears them. Spawning process lasts about an hour.

During this time, the pair manage to postpone more than a hundred fertilized eggs. From them it turns out to deduce up to 60 fry.

Incubation period continues from 16 to 25 days, and all this time the female can not eat at all, becoming very exhausted and weak.

Appeared fry grow slowly. First them fed with daphnia and small cyclops, trying not to allow errors in nutrition.

In sensitive fry, diseases develop very quickly with improper feeding and the state of water in the aquarium.

With proper care, cichlids will deliver many joyful minutes to breeders. These beautiful and interesting fish will live for many years, calming a person in disturbing moments.
