Hello dear lovers of aquariums. The royal tetra is widely found in forest streams in the northwest of the Cordillera mountain range in the territory of the South American state of Colombia. Royal tetras have an elongated powerful body, slightly flattened on the sides.
The back of the fish is more arched than the abdomen. In young fish, the sides of the brownish shade, and with age, the sides of the fish should lighten.
On the sides are two wide strips that end near the tail. The upper band can be either light blue or light green, and the lower can be either black or brown. The iris of the eyes has something in between green and blue.
The fins of the fish are yellowish-green, and the anal fin has a light-green border around the edges. The tail is painted in a reddish-brown tone.
The extreme and middle ray on the caudal fin in males are rather strongly elongated. It is possible to distinguish a female from a male by the iris of the eye: it is blue in the male and green in the female.
The adult fish does not exceed 6 centimeters in length.
The royal tetra is a schooling and peace-loving aquarium fish that feels great at any level of the aquarium. In the flock of royal tetras, the law of the hierarchy is clearly visible: the stronger male contains more territory and more females in his harem. It is therefore very important when buying a flock of fish to purchase more females than males.
Keep this cute fish can be a common aquarium, and in the species, which is more preferable.
For a flock of 7 fish (a pair of males and 5 females) to feel well, an aquarium 70 centimeters long is enough. In the aquarium must be floating plants, places with dense vegetation are also welcome. On forget and about the shelter of stones and snags.
It is not recommended to place more males than females in a small aquarium. It is likely that a stronger male will take over all the territory for himself and force all rivals to seek shelter in thick grass. The water in the aquarium with royal tetras should have the following parameters:
- water temperature: 23-26 degrees;
- water hardness: not more than 8 degrees;
- active reaction environment: 6-7 pH.
By six months of life, the royal tetra becomes sexually mature. Spawning for a male and several females should be 60 centimeters long.
But fish can spawn in the species aquarium. Some aquarists believe that if you spawn a female and a male unprepared for breeding, the latter can easily kill her. But if there are several females, the male will be distracted and nothing terrible will happen.
The presence of Javanese moss in spawning is welcome. In addition, create lush thickets of plants, using for this purpose elodeyu, a peristististnik and a few floating plants (riccia and pistis).
Water in spawning should have the following parameters:
- water hardness: not more than 5 degrees;
- water temperature: 24-28 degrees;
- acidity: 6-6.8 pH.
Caviar can ripen with softer and more acidic water, but in the future small things can get edematous. Before spawning the dominant male should be held separately from the female. If you plant fish in spawning in the evening, the spawning itself should occur in the morning.
Over time, the female can sweep from 50 to 150 eggs. As soon as spawning is over, the producers are removed from the spawning ground and returned to the general aquarium.
After that, the water level in spawning should be reduced to 8 centimeters and the aquarium priten. After a couple of days, the fry will slip and they will be able to swim in 4-5 days.
You can feed fry from the start with rotifers, ciliates, and then nauplii of artemia.
