Rhodostomus, or the red-bearing tetra, is a small fish from the Kharacin family, which is often kept in domestic aquariums. In nature, it is most often found in the Amazon delta, where other harazinki are found.
Reservoirs in South America are characterized by soft and acidic water, so in Europe, their natives have difficulty adapting, have partially lost their brightness and are considered to be whimsical in care.
Rodostomus from the Kharacin family.
The red headed tetra looks quite extraordinary. The size of a fish 4.5 cm, the body has an elongated shape.
Special noteworthy is the color of rhodostomus:
- the body is covered with silvery translucent scales;
- a greenish strip passes over the back;
- head and gill covers painted in neon red;
- on the forked tail alternate white and black stripes.
Males have a more slender body and a characteristic hook on the rear fin. In females – a rounded abdomen and slightly smaller size. In the natural environment, fish live an average of 6 years.
In an aquarium, tetra can live up to 8 years of age while creating ideal conditions, it leads an active lifestyle. Rodostomusov distinguishes fearful character.
Males of rhodostomus are more graceful, with a small belly, in females, it is more pronounced, more rounded.
When transplanting or transporting the fish, they seem to grow stupid and may even die from the experienced stress. Handle them with extreme care.
The aquarium fish rhodostomus is considered capricious in its content and is more suitable for experienced breeders. These tetras are of medium size, they live in flocks, they like to swim actively, therefore their aquarium should be from 50 liters. For soil, gravel or large river sand is used.
Since the fish are timid and love to hide in the thickets, it is necessary to plant aquarium plants. For decoration, you can use snags.
It is recommended to throw in the aquarium dry leaves, which will create a layer at the bottom. Such an environment will resemble a natural biotope.
The blanking of the color is the main signal that conditions have worsened in the aquarium.
It is better to locate the aquarium in the depths of the room, where the fish will not be disturbed by loud sounds and crowds of people. For the comfortable existence of rhodostomus (tetra) certain water parameters are needed:
- temperature – 22−26 °
- stiffness – 6−15 °
- acidity – 5.8−8 pH.
Tetras are sensitive to the high content of nitrates and ammonia, so it is better to install an external filter, it cleans better.
Check the parameters of the water should be special test strips purchased in the store for aquarists. The deterioration of indicators is indicated by a change in the color of the fish to a more faded one. Illumination should not be too bright prefer shading effect.
Water change is made weekly in the amount of 25%.
Schooling fish, which include and rhodostomusov, contain in the amount of not less than 6−8 pieces. This species does not have a clearly defined leader, tetras frolic in the water all together. Other peace loving harazinki, rasbora, neons, catfish corridors will perfectly suit them as neighbors.
The last two species live together with rhodostomusami in the wild.
It is recommended to feed the rodostomuses 2–3 times a day in small portions. Feed must be fully eaten within 3-4 minutes.
Fish unpretentious in food. They willingly eat dry fodder, frozen bloodworms, Artemia, and pipe worker.
The flakes need to be crushed before being thrown into the aquarium, as the mouth of the rodostomus is small.
Occasionally can be grated vegetables, so that the fish did not eat the leaves of aquarium plants. The more varied their diet, the better the immune system and better health.
Breeding of rodostomusov can be called a painstaking matter requiring special attention. This is due to the fact that for the fertilization of caviar you need perfectly clean water. Another obstacle in this way is the slow growth of fry.
For reproduction of these aquarium fish, a specially equipped spawning machine with a UV sterilizer built into the filter is needed. Processing aquarium ultraviolet will allow to obtain water of the required quality.
Rodostomusy, which is planned to be diluted, should grow in sour and soft water. Before planting fish for spawning, it is fed live food. Tetra reach sexual maturity by the age of 8–12 months if they were grown in the right environment.
From now on, it will be possible to determine their gender. Before breeding males and females contain separately in softer water, which is warmer than usual at 1–2 ° C and has a pH of up to 6.6–6.8.
The lifespan of a red-nosed tetra is about 5 years.
Water for spawning experts recommend preparing a special way. To do this, mix rainwater and distilled water, add a little water taken from forest puddles, and a decoction of peat.
The mixture is filtered and poured into a container a few days before spawning. At the time of the settlement of tetras water should have a temperature of 25−27 ° C, hardness 2−6 ° and pH.
Compliance with these parameters increases the chances of a successful spawning.
When you start the fish you need to consider that the number of males should be twice the number of females.
The whole process of spawning takes about 10 days. Males actively look after females, and those try to hide from their harassment. Spawning must necessarily cover the top with glass, otherwise the fish can jump out.
Finally, tired females give up and go to spawn. The process begins in the evening, in the morning tetras spawn.
So that the eggs are not eaten on the fly, they set up a grid in the spawn, through which they fall to the bottom.
It is advisable to use an external filter, as the fish are sensitive to the content of ammonia and nitrates in the water.
After spawning Parents are removed from the aquarium and the eggs are shaded for 24 hours.. Then the grid is removed and the water level is lowered. Fry appear on the 4th day.
Each female is able to lay up to 400 small eggs at a time. They feed offspring several times a day with infusoria and “live dust”. By the age of two months, the fry reach the size of adult fish.
The red-bearing tetra can spawn up to 8 times a year.
