Red-tailed (Orinok) catfish – maintenance and feeding of fractoceph

Aquarium with fish will fit into any interior. It is interesting to watch these creatures, their appearance and smooth movements are calming.

Fish species are diverse: from small ones, the length of which is no more than 2 centimeters, to huge predators. Catfish are very popular, they are often kept at home.

Red-tailed catfish or fractocephalus (Orinok) is a large predator with a bright orange tail.

Red-tailed Catfish – is popular among fans of bright and beautiful fish.

The birthplace of fish is South America, the Amazon River. The weight of an adult individual grown in natural conditions is 75–80 kilograms, the length reaches 175 centimeters.

Life expectancy of this fish is about 20 years. An adult fractocephalus can easily drag small animals from the shore and feed on them.

For humans, the predator is not dangerous, although among the locals there is a legend that once the red-tailed bird dragged a child into the river.

Despite its large size, predator has an attractive appearance. The body is oblong, the back is gray with small spots, the belly is white with a yellow tinge.

A large head and two bulging eyes immediately attract attention.

Fractocephalus has three pairs of whiskers: one pair is on top, the other on the lower jaw. Mustache, which are located on top, longer than others.

The red-tailed tail gets its name because of the bright tail fin, the color of which can be orange or red.

The fish is capable of making trumpet sounds, similar to the roar of an elephant, carried to a distance of up to one hundred meters.

Catfish grows quickly and reaches a large size in a year. Sometimes predators are bred for meat.

Fish meat is considered a delicacy.

Red-tailed catfish is picky. Ground at the bottom of any suitable: sand, gravel or small stones.

You need to be careful with stones, fractocephalus can swallow them, and the rough surface of the stone will damage the internal organs of the fish. Still necessary for content:

  • Aquarium at least 350 liters (as you grow the aquarium should be increased).
  • Moderate lighting, somas do not like light.
  • Water temperature should be from 21 to 26 degrees.
  • pH 5.5−7.2
  • Water hardness 3−13 degrees.
  • Weak current
  • High-quality water filter.
  • Shelter.
  • Water change daily or at least several times a week.

The red-tailed fractocephalus is very voracious, it is impossible to contain small fish in the same aquarium. An adult catfish is inactive and is nocturnal, during the day it can lie motionless for several hours.

In the daytime, he hides in a shelter or buries himself in the ground. The decorations in the aquarium should be large, otherwise the predator will take them for food and swallow them.

Soma can be settled in an artificial pond or pond. The main thing – to monitor the temperature and water quality.

Som red-tailed aquarium is peaceful, rarely shows aggression and easily gets along with fish of the same size. Aquarium for two fish should be at least twice as large. As neighbors fit:

  • other types of catfish;
  • large cichlids.

To keep at home a few big fish is almost impossible. Most often, large predators can be found in aquariums. At home in the aquarium it is better to keep one fractocephalus.

Two redtails can not divide the territory in the aquarium and cripple each other.

Orinok’s catfish has a wonderful appetite, its gluttony often leads to obesity. It catches everything that goes into the aquarium.

Favorite treat – insects and fruit pieces. Adult catfish are fed a variety of:

  • white fish fillet;
  • earthworms;
  • shrimp;
  • mussels;
  • specialized feed;
  • frogs.

The diet of the red-tailed catfish needs to be changed, the fish gets used to one food and can refuse it. It is impossible to give the predator fresh meat and liver, it will lead to disruption of the internal organs and diseases with a fatal outcome.

Feed the predator is necessary once a day. As the fish matures, a hearty meal takes place once a week.

It is almost impossible to breed a predator in captivity. At the moment there is no information on the differences of sexual characteristics, and the aquarium for breeding should be huge.

Red-tailed catfish in captivity bred for meat. In Russia, there are no farms for breeding such fish.

They are mainly located in Brazil.

Keeping a house of any fish and animals requires certain knowledge and financial costs. You can not irresponsibly treat the aquarium and the living conditions of the fish. It is necessary to buy such a predator after studying its conditions of detention.

If you follow all the recommendations, the catfish will live for many years. A close aquarium and improper feeding is deadly.
