Red paku – how to keep, breed at home

Hello, friends! Red pacu lives in nature in water bodies located in the Amazon delta. In South America, this species of fish is considered commercial.

In the red pac, the body is flattened on the sides and the whole body is covered with small silvery scales. The fins and belly of the fish are red, and there is a dark stripe on the edge of the caudal fin.

Unfortunately, this fish has no obvious sexual differences.

Females are slightly larger than males and the belly is of a slightly different shape. In nature, the fish grows up to a meter in length and its weight can reach 25 kilograms.

In the same aquarium conditions, their size rarely exceeds 40-50 centimeters. The natural life of a red pacu in natural conditions, scientists were able to fix recently – 28 years.

But in conditions of captivity it is unlikely that a fish will live more than 10 years.

Although the red pack belongs to the piranha subfamily, the hydrobiont cannot be called aggressive, rather even peace-loving. All your free time fish eating vegetable food. In order to contain a pack, it is better to do this in a specific aquarium at the rate of 100 liters per fish.

You can find out from some sources that it is generally advised to provide one cube of water per fish. This can be done only in an artificial pond, but not in a home specific aquarium. Red pack is better to keep a small flock, which should be at least 6 fish.

Under acceptable conditions, your pets will grow fairly quickly. For the content of this Amazonian guest you must provide the following points:

  • temperature: 22-28 degrees;
  • hardness from 5 to 20 dH;
  • acidity: pH 6 to pH 7
  • weekly water change in the amount of 30%;
  • good aeration and filtration of aquarium water.

As aquarium soil is best to use coarse gravel. Live aquatic plants are not recommended in aquasa paca, as they will quickly go as feed.

Only Javanese moss will survive. Therefore, to more or less beautifully arrange an aquarium with a pacu, use plastic plants for this.

It is also necessary in Aquas to make a couple of stone shelters in the form of caves of such size that an adult fish could fit in them.

Red pacu can be fed both live and vegetable feed, which should occupy the lion’s share of its diet. Sometimes you can give bloodworms and brakes, but do not give them all the time.

This is likely to be a dietary supplement to the basic plant diet. From the vegetable food can be given nettle leaves, lettuce, dandelion, vegetables and oatmeal.

In addition, the fish can eat the beef, but if you give it systematically, your pet from a gentle lamb will turn into an aggressive monster.

Mature red pacu becomes aged from one to two years. In the network and other literature you will not find comprehensive information about the breeding of this fish in artificial conditions.

But it became known that pituitary injections are a stimulating factor. Huge aquatic, intensive and rich feeding greatly affect the probability of obtaining offspring. It is also known that when spawning females should be less than males.

When the female spawn, the male fertilizes it immediately. After that, the parents throw their eggs without observation.

Cichlids would not allow this to happen. Starter feed for fry – Artemia. If the young are fed abundantly, they will quickly grow.

So that there are no signs of aggression inside the growing flock, as they grow, it is desirable to sort and seat the fry.
