Red neon fish (paracheirodon axelrodi): keeping, breeding, photos, feeding, behavior, differences of male from female

Unpretentious fish – red neons, common among aquarists, has earned attention due to its bright color and small size. This pet will be a good choice for beginner aquarists.

Paracheirodon axelrodi, a species of ray-finned fish found in the fresh waters of tropical forests, belongs to the Kharatsyn family. It was first described by Schulz in 1956, 20 years after the discovery of blue neon.

Natural habitat in nature – slow rivers and lakes of South America. They live in a flock of 10 fish.

Prefer middle layers of reservoirs, near the bottom and the surface float rarely.

Prone to neon disease, which affects the skin of the body and discolor them. It leads to the death of fish.

Red neon is often confused with a relative – blue neon. An inexperienced person doesn’t really distinguish them at first sight, because they look similar in color.

Red neonBlue neon
The blue line on the body runs along the upper part of the middle of the body from the mouth to the base of the tail. The blue stripe stretches across the entire upper part of the body from the mouth and ends a little further than the dorsal fin.
The bright red line occupies the entire lower part from the bottom of the head to the tail. The red strip starts from the middle of the body on the abdomen and ends near the base of the tail.
Larger size.Smaller size.
They require more thorough care.Unpretentious.

The body length of the females does not exceed 5 cm, and the males are 3 cm. Their upper back of the neon is not brightly colored, but has a beige color, and the belly is olive-white.

The fins and tail are transparent.

The species of fish belongs to schooling animals, therefore, without a company, they feel uncomfortable in solitude, some are prone to death, therefore the minimum number of fish in an aquarium is 5 pieces.

Do not differ aggressive nature and behavior. Therefore, get along with fish that are neutral to them.

When close to large fish are under stress.

In the natural environment, the lifespan does not exceed one and a half years, but when leaving in an aquarium without diseases and hunger, they live up to 5 years.

The main condition for the content of red neons is a pack of 7–20 representatives. Otherwise, they are unpretentious and care for them is no different from other neons.

The size of the aquarium ranges from 20 to 60 liters, depending on the number of flocks and the density of the population of other fish. Fish like to swim fast in flocks, so it is better to make a choice in favor of an elongated aquarium than a high one.

Be sure to equip the lid, neons easily jump out of the water.

Comfortable water temperature – 21-27 degrees, but it is better to lean towards a lower temperature, because it prolongs the life. Water hardness 5–6 dGH.

Prefer acidified water, which helps the color to be brighter.

Neons love to swim among a large amount of vegetation, so land on the edges of the aquarium Javanese moss, echinodorus, fern. They do not spoil the foliage and roots of plants, so you can not worry about the state of the vegetation.

For the ground, dark themes are more often chosen, in which the color of neons appears brighter. River sand, pebbles and gravel are suitable as substrates.

For shelters placed on the bottom of snags and clay pots.

Although neon and unpretentious, they need an aerator to enrich the water with oxygen, and a compressor, to remove food debris and fish waste, keeping the aquarium clean.

Too bright lighting unnerves neons, they feel safe in shady places or with diffused lighting. In a dark tank their color looks brighter.

These fish are picky in their food, eat live, dry, frozen food. In nature, their diet consists of crustaceans, insect larvae, worms.

The size of the feed pellets should fit the mouth of the fish so that it swallows it.

Of particular importance for fish is the vitamin complex that comes with food. For this purpose, specialized vitamin flakes are sold, which compensate for the lack of important substances.

The feeding time of the pack does not exceed 5 minutes and is carried out 2 times a day. But if possible, feed more often, but in smaller doses, so that the feed is eaten in 2 minutes.

The most successful version of the neighborhood of red neons will be a society of similar fish, because the flock helped them to survive. But they feel good with other species, if they are not harmed by the fish.

Neon and small fish like rasbor, labyrinth, dwarf cichlids, catfish corridors, nanostomus, erythrozonos are compatible. The size of the neighbors should not exceed the size of neons, and ideally be even smaller.

All large species of fish that are capable of swallowing neon are not suitable for living together, especially this applies to predators, aggressive and territorial fish. Even if they do not swallow the red neon, they will create a stressful environment for the fish.

These include cichlids, discus, roosters, goldfish, angelfish, astronotus, akara, tsikhlazomy.

Breeding of red neon begins at 8-9 months, when the fish reach sexual maturity. Neons differ in fertility, but for reproduction they will need to create natural favorable conditions.

Selected representatives for a week and a half before spawning are transplanted into separate medium-sized containers with high temperature and an abundance of food. The day before fertilization, feeding stops.

They are transplanted into a prepared spawn and fed again.

New tenants. I like red neons very much, because they are knocking off into a flock, which is very beautiful in the small amounts. # AQUA # neon # redneon

As a spawning tank, a 10-liter tank is selected, in which distilled and aquarium water is mixed in equal proportions. Water temperature 23 degrees; pale, diffused lighting.

More often, moss is laid out on the bottom or an unpretentious plant (live or artificial) is planted, to which the eggs will be attached.

The choice of producers is especially important in the subsequent sale of fish, the health of fry, their coloring and fertility depends on it.

Breeding candidates are painted in a bright color that symbolizes health and vitality. The male is distinguished by activity and quickness. Females are chosen for a thick belly and large size.

These characteristics will give healthy and viable offspring.

After transplanting into spawning steam begins to swim one after another, studying the partner. After dark, the female spawns eggs, and the male fertilizes them.

One female throws out 150 eggs, which stick to the surrounding vegetation, on the walls of the aquarium. Adult representatives are moved to a common reservoir so that they do not eat offspring.

Malky require low light, bright, direct rays are not allowed. After 4 days, the young become active and begin to explore the reservoir.

As a food serves ciliates, the egg white, carefully crushed, and rotifers. Gradually increase the hardness of the water to the aquarium with adults.

After a couple of weeks, the features of the coloring appear on the body of the fry, and after a month they are outwardly indistinguishable from adult representatives. They are transplanted into the main aquarium.

The prevalence of red neons among aquarists is high, everyone notes their brightness, nimbleness. They give the aquarium a feeling of fullness. And the coloring attracts attention and allows you to escape from the problems of life, bringing tranquility.

But difficulties arise with the adaptation to other fish in the aquarium and the reproduction of neons.

The cost of a representative red neon depends on the age of the fish, its external data size.

Average prices of fish red neon depending on age group:

  • Watch the parameters of water – a sharp decrease in temperature will lead to blanching of the fish and poor health.
  • Provide space for swimming.
  • Do not feed only protein foods, because then the fish refuse any other food.
  • Neons do not fight and fight for food, so with high competition they will remain hungry. Add more feed, or move the flock to a separate tank.

Red neons are prevalent due to their easy care and attractive color. With the establishment of these fish, every aquarist will get aesthetic pleasure and closeness with nature.
