Ramirezi’s apistogram (Microgeophagus Ramirezi) – content, breeding

Ramirezi Apistogram or Ramirezi Butterfly (Apistogramma ramirezi, Papiliochromis ramirezi, Microgeophagus ramirezi) Myers Harry, 1948.

Family Cichl – Dwarf Cichlids.

One of the most elegant cichlids. This, along with its small size and peaceful behavior, makes it very popular among both beginners and experienced aquarists.

South America – Venezuela and Colombia. Most suggest that this species is restricted to the Venezuelan and Colombian llanos of the Orinoco River Basin, although several specimens are said to have been collected in the Rio Purus, Brazil, a tributary of the Amazon, located at some distance from this watershed.

Llanos (a type of terrain) is a vast, very rich in biodiversity, a system of tropical savannas, pastures with plains and forests, covering an area of about 600,000 square kilometers in Venezuela and Colombia. It has well-defined annual weather conditions with pronounced wet and dry seasons and year-round high temperatures.

This fish attracts a lot of attention to the bright blue color on the yellowish-red background of the body, on the sides of which there are black spots. The front half of the body is colored yellow.

The iris of the eye is red with a black line intersecting vertically, in some individuals passing in the region of the forehead and gill covers.

In mature males, the nose is colored in a rich red color. The belly of the females is pink. The fins of the male are longer, the anterior second and third rays on the dorsal fin are longer than the others and are colored black.

The pectoral fins are transparent, the others are orange with red edges, the dorsal, caudal, anal are painted in blue spots. The ventral fin after the anterior black ray is colored bright blue.

Ramirezi Butterfly males reach 7 cm, females up to 5 cm.

Perfectly gets on with any peaceful tropical fish, does not dig the ground, does not damage the plants, and therefore is an ideal object for sharing in the aquarium, stylized as a pond of tropical forest.

The minimum volume of the aquarium 25-40 liters per pair of fish. It will be very comfortable to fish in an aquarium stylized as a pond of a tropical forest.

Feel great if you add alder cones, almond leaves or peat to the water, thus increasing the content of humus, which fish are used to in natural habitat.

A more natural look can be given to the aquarium by a sandy substrate with roots and branches of trees placed in such a way that a lot of shady places and shelters are made, plus one or two flat stones to provide a potential place for spawning.

Temperature: 26 to 30 ° C
pH: 4 to 7.5
Stiffness: 6 to 15 ° dH

It is very important to maintain the temperature not lower than 26-27 ° C, at lower values the fish is subject to various diseases, respectively, life expectancy is reduced. The most comfortable fish at a temperature of 28-30 ° C, they swim briskly, very active and mobile.

Water hardness should not exceed 12-15 ° dGH, the pH can be in the range of 6.5-7.5.

Filtration and aeration are mandatory. Water changes are carried out weekly of the total volume of the aquarium.

Any live (bloodworm, corelet, daphnia, cyclops, tubule), dry and frozen food will suit the Apistogram.

Adult males grow larger than females, have slightly more extended fins and are more intensely colored.

Most females have a pinkish stain on the abdomen, which is absent in males.

For successful breeding, it is desirable to purchase a group of young stock from 9-11 pieces. Butterflies usually reach sexual maturity by 6 months, but may spawn even earlier.

Spawning occurs when the temperature rises to 28-30 ° C, replacing part of the water with a softer one to reduce the total hardness (dGH) to 4 ° and pH 6.

Parents care for caviar, constantly fanning it with fins. It lasts about three days.

Then the parents hatch out the larvae into a small pre-prepared cavity in the sand, where the carefully protected offspring stay for three more days.

When the fry swim and go on an active diet should begin to feed them. The starter feed is “live dust” – ciliate, rotifer, nauplii of Artemia.

There are cases of eating caviar by parents. If this happens, the eggs are transferred to a separate tank immediately or on the second day, with aeration and water from the same tank, adding methylene blue to a slightly bluish color for disinfection.

The temperature of the water is increased by 2-3 ° С, regularly replacing water, and when fry appear, it is necessary to clean the aquarium daily, removing waste products and not eaten feed.
