Psevdotrofeus Sokolov (Pindani): photo and how to contain

Hello dear friends! Today on the agenda of the evening we have an aquarium fish of their cichl family called Psevdotrofeus Sokolova. This aquatic species lives in the African Lake Malawi, which is located in the Eastern part of the African continent.

There is a fish on the rocky-stony landscape, which is located in dense thickets of aquatic plants. This representative of the Cichlians is referred to as Mbunam, which means “inhabitant of the rocks”.

This name was given to all the cichlids that inhabit the rocky shallow waters of Lake Malawi.

Psevdotrofeus Sokolov is very popular among aquarists, as he is known for his “intellectual behavior” of bright coloring. Like other tsikhlovye, males Sokolov very territorial guys. Fish tries to occupy the area between the stones and rocky protrusions.

Females and juveniles prefer to dwell either alone or in small groups. Unlike males, females do not protect their territory.

The body of Pseudotrofeus is slightly elongated. Body color in males and females is the same – pale blue color, which in rare cases has a purple tide.

The color of young animals is the same as in adult fish. The first rays of the pectoral and caudal fins are painted in a dark blue shade. Anal fin blue.

If the fish is very frightened, then purple spots can appear on its body. It is possible to distinguish females from males only in size and more developed fins. In the male on the anal fin you can see yellow spots similar to eggs.

Males can be up to 12 cm long, and females up to 10 cm.

Since the hero of our article today is a Cichl representative, he needs a large body of water with a huge number of all kinds of shelters. The ideal decor option for a cichlid aquarium is a rocky landscape with caves, grottoes and other rock formations. In order to weaken the intraspecific aggression, it is desirable to maintain a high degree of population of the reservoir in the tsikhlidnik.

And it is not necessary that these were pseudotropheus, you can add other African cichlids of the same size to them, for example, Psevdotrofeus Demasoni.

Since Psevdotrofeus Sokolov is considered a polygamous fish, for males you need a small haremchik consisting of 2-3 females. Observations have shown that the fish is quite livable with other neighbors. For the successful maintenance of a hydrobiont in an aquarium, the conditions are as follows:

  • active reaction: 7.2-8.5 pH;
  • hardness: from 8 to 25 dGH;
  • water temperature: 24-27 degrees;
  • weekly substitution in the amount of 1/3 of the volume;
  • good aeration and filtration.

In nature, the cichlid prefers to eat algae, which it nibbles from stones and rocks, and in rare cases it can be supported by plankton. In aquarium conditions, Pseudotrofeus Sokolov should be fed with combined, vegetable and live food.

But the basic diet should be vegetable. The life of a cichlid in an aquarium is no more than five years.

Pseudotrophus reaches sexual maturity at the age of 9-12 months. Similar to other cichlids from this bioetope, Sokolov females incubate eggs in their mouths. During spawning, the female can postpone from 25 to 90 eggs.

The incubation period of the calf in the female’s mouth can last from two to three weeks, at the end of which the young go outside. Since the cichlid cherishes the offspring, it can be aggressive towards other fish.

Starter feed for fry: Cyclops and Nauplii Artemia.
