Psevdotrofeus elongatus: a beauty with an aggressive character

Adherents of aquariums in an exotic style can recommend one of the most spectacular species of African cichlids – pseudotrophus elongatus. It will not leave anyone indifferent and will add to your authority in fish business a big plus, if you cope with its content.

Dwelling in their homeland – Lake Malawi in East Africa, they reach a length of 10 cm.

The body shape is classical for all cichlids – it is elongated and flattened laterally. The front end ends with expressive lips and large eyes.

The males have a fat pad on top, giving the appearance of aggressiveness.

Another feature is the specific structure of the teeth of the upper jaw.

Appeal to fish gives its coloring. More often it is bright blue with dark vertical stripes. The tail fin and the back of the dorsal are often colored bright orange or yellow.

The ventral fin and the area around the mouth are rather dark.

According to experienced aquarists in the company of elongatus, not all fish are bright. The most spectacular color has a dominant individual, all the others look faded.

Known brown, red, agate variants, not less original and noticeable.

The size of fish in pet stores usually does not exceed 8 cm (for the male) and 6 cm (for the female). However, there are smaller instances.

The well-being of an aquarium with Pseudotropheus elongatus will depend, first of all, on the existence of mutual understanding between its inhabitants. Such fish rarely make friends with anyone, except with representatives of their native penates (tsikhlovymi: Stephen aulonacara, Greshaki Maylandia, Bensha aulonocaro).

You should not even try to settle them with small fish, smaller in size or having a modest peaceful nature.

If there are unwanted neighbors in the aquarium, the elongatuses will not use their fins to shorten.

Internal relationships have a chance to become peaceful if the company has one male and 3-4 females.

Secondarily, attention should be paid to the microclimate parameters. Water temperature should not exceed 24-28 ° C.

In cold water, the pseudo-tropheus is under stress, and in this state the brightness of the stripes dims and the fish lose their chic.

For indicators of water hardness, the tolerance interval is wider: 4-20 units.

The normal acidity index (pH) is 7.2-8.5.

Being engaged in breeding Pseudotropheus elongatus, one should be prepared that the most stringent requirements are imposed on water quality:

  • perfect cleanliness;
  • high level of aeration;
  • weekly change of at least one third of the available volume.

For a good mood fish need for secluded corners where you can hide. They welcome the thick green thickets and heaps of stones.

Among the zebra-like elongatus, you immediately notice the pseudotrophus elongatus chevere. Their narrow and long hull is well adapted for caves and cracks.

In nature, they realize their habits through cave excursions. At the same time inside the cave, they are often located belly up.

Psevdotrofeus elongatus chevere

Large owners of the territory. Where Chevery live, it is unlikely to be able to distinguish another species.

They love to scrape rock outgrowths with their special teeth, raking in algae and other loose material.

Psevdotrofeus Elongatus Mpanga

Psevdotrofeus elongatus mpanga on a purple-blue background have from 5 to 12 black stripes. This elongatus in nature lives at a depth of 4-20 m, preferring a plot without sediment.

Perhaps this is the only species that can be conditionally classified as trouble-free and easy to maintain. However, he needs:

  • large aquarium;
  • specific rock scenery;
  • suitable team of “neighbors”.

The description of the composition of the water should be as close as possible to those places where Malawian cichlids live (water 22-32 ° C, hardness with an indicator from 3 to 19, acidity from 7.3 to 8.4).

Psevdotrofeus elongatus chaylozi

A very beautiful and interesting fish – pseudotrophus elongatus chaylozi (there are many photos on the Internet). The brightness of its color can overshadow all other residents. When properly selected, its body is poured gold.

A strip of the same shade runs along the outer edge of the dorsal fin, creating a peculiar areola around the body.

In nature, the way of eating pseudotrophs is very unusual. Scraping off special growths from underwater rocks, it is located at an angle of 15-45 o to them and is not imprinted on the stones, but slowly sucks everything that fell into the area of their mouth.

More often it is algae or silica from thickets of such algae.

The difference in feeding in aquarium conditions is the following: it is necessary to combine in the diet 60% of plant food and 40% of live food.

To taste elongatus daphnia, cyclops, coretr, tubule and bloodworm.

The plant component can be represented by scalded lettuce, crushed dandelion stem or nettle.

Do not forget that the remains of food in the water can quickly rot and spoil the impeccable quality of the habitat. Therefore, immediately after the expiration of 20-25 minutes of feeding, they should be carefully collected with a special net.
