Pennant piranha: photo and how to keep in a species aquarium

Hello colleagues. Today we will talk with you about a representative of the Kharacin family, called flag piranha. In nature, this fish can be found in the Orinoco, Paraguay, Amazon river basin.

The territory of its distribution is very impressive, piranha can be found on the territory of five South American states: Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Venezuela and Gaina.

In the piranha flag, the belly is reddish, and the rest of the body has a silver color with a greenish-gray tinge. There is a large red spot on the gill cover. The anterior rays of the anal and dorsal fins are slightly elongated with respect to the others.

The fish got its name thanks to this interesting feature. When transporting fish to your aquarium, be extremely careful, as these fins can be easily broken and they will no longer recover.

The anal fin is orange and all the others are gray.

The tail fin at the base is black. A male from a female can be distinguished by a darker and convex caudal fin. Also, the males have a more elongated lower jaw.

The main distinguishing feature of the flag piranha in relation to other species of this fish is the interesting shape of the teeth, which are located in the oral cavity on the upper jaw in two rows. Adult piranha can reach 15 centimeters in length and its lifespan is from 10 to 12 years.

Like other species of piranhas, the pennant is an ingrained predator which is not recommended to be placed in a common aquarium inhabited by swordtails, red neons, Sumatran barbs and other peaceful medium-sized fish. Otherwise they will go as feed for breakfast.

In addition, these fish can not be settled with large fish, because they can lose fins and scales. This line of behavior piranha is obliged to the upper jaw with teeth-scrapers, which allows the fish to lead a semi-parasitic life.

If you bought a group of young individuals, you can keep them in the same aquarium, but if some fish are lagging behind in development, larger specimens should be separated from the main mass. With age, females become intolerant of males and begin to attack them regularly. Thanks to a strongly developed musculature, powerful head and jaws with sharp teeth, pennant piranha can cause quite serious injuries to other inhabitants of your aquarium.

Extremely aggressive fish become in the event of stress, namely with a lack of food, lack of free space, as a result of transportation, fear and deterioration of the chemical composition of water.

Young fish prefer to keep in small flocks. When piranha reaches sexual maturity, it begins to lead an isolated lifestyle.

Pennant piranha excellently feels in the thickets of aquarium plants, and in the pile of bark and stones. It is recommended to plant aquatic plants with a strong root system in the aquarium soil.

Since piranha grows to a decent size, the aquarist will have to acquire a fairly spacious aquarium, which should have floating aquatic plants (pistiya, riccia, javanese moss), large stones and branchy snags.

I would like to draw your attention to the fact that the flag piranha very sensitively reacts to fluctuations in the chemical composition of aquarium water. In order to prevent sudden changes in the chemical parameters of the water in the aquarium, it is recommended to regularly replace the water in small portions.

You can feed a pet with small fish, mussels, shrimps, earthworms and meat, which you can pre-cut into small pieces. Just do not forget to diversify the diet of plant foods, which should be in the diet up to 40%. As a vegetable feed, you can use nettle leaves, lettuce and spinach.

Before serving green piranhas, scald it with boiling water. Aquarium water in a piranha jar should meet the following requirements:

  • active reaction environment: 5.8-7.2 pH;
  • hardness: not more than 15 °;
  • water temperature: 23-28 degrees.

When you pick the piranha aquarium, be careful and take care of your hands!
