In good conditions live about 8 years.

Dwarf cichlid is suitable for beginners, because the range of hardness and acidity, in which the parrots live, is quite wide. In the natural environment, water is from very soft and acidic to medium-hard alkaline.

For a young pair of parrot pelvikakhromisov a medium-sized aquarium is enough from 70 l. For the maintenance of the pelvicahromis group, select a capacity of 150 liters. Mandatory cover so that the fish do not jump out of the water. And also parrots need a large number of shelters:

  • grottoes;
  • coconut shells;
  • caves;
  • stones;
  • pots;
  • pipe scraps.
  • Water temperature24–27 degrees
    Rigidity5–19 dGh
    Salted waternot
    Water movementmedium or weak

    Change a quarter of the water and siphon the soil weekly. Periodically check the state of water tests.

    Place floating plants or plants with a powerful root system that do not require a lot of light:

    Pick up smooth soils of fine and medium fraction, for example, fine gravel or sand. The ground must be dark and not sharp so as not to injure the fish digging in the ground.

    If the substrate is painted, make sure that the paint is harmless to aquarium parrots.

    Choose a filter that does not create strong water movement. Equip the aquarium with a thermometer. In summer, at critically high temperatures, cool the water with ice packs.

    In cold weather, use a heater.

    Pelvicahromis prefer moderate lighting. Integrated use of the lamp and the heater overheats the water, so be careful and monitor the temperature.

    Omnivorous parrots absorb dry, frozen and live food:

    Make a varied diet by combining different types of food. Sometimes add herbal supplements, such as spirulina or a cucumber slice. Choose high-quality dry food from proven manufacturers.

    Do not take feed by weight, check expiration dates. Balanced dry food with herbal supplements will also be useful.

    Pelvicahromis has good compatibility with calm and peaceful fish:

  • gourami;
  • rass;
  • danios;
  • mollies;
  • swordtails;
  • barbs.
  • Pick up neighbors that match the size and parameters of the aquatic environment. Predatory, aggressive and large species are not suitable for living together.

    Spawning pelvicahromis occurs in the general aquarium or spawning. If you do not set aside parrots for breeding, take care of the delimitation of the territory and a large number of shelters.

    Parents care and protect the fry even after hatching.

    Sexual maturity comes at the age of 9–12 months. The body size of the male is 10 cm, the females – 7 cm. The tail of the male is diamond-shaped, and the female is rounded.

    The abdomen of the male is red, in the female it is more violet and rounded.

    If several pairs of pelvihacromis live in a reservoir, then spawning begins with the struggle of males for territory. They collide with noses and push each other. Having defined the territory, the parrots pair up and prepare dwellings for posterity.

    Couples are saved for life, therefore, parrots taken from different reservoirs may not give offspring. Optimally settle 3-4 fish of different sexes.

    Stimulate spawning by increasing the temperature by 2–3 degrees and replacing 20% of the water with fresh. Pelvicahromis spawn in canyons and grottoes. Place a few shelters so that the fish themselves choose where to form the clutch.

    In laying 100–300 eggs. Fry hatch in 2-4 days.

    Appeared offspring at first can not swim and another 3 days lying on the leaves. When the fry move independently, feed them:

  • infusoria;
  • grated egg yolk;
  • living dust;
  • nauplii of artemia;
  • chopped adult fish feed.

    Diseases occur in adverse conditions of detention. With proper maintenance of an aquarium, parrots rarely get sick. Subject to the same ailments as the rest of the cichlids:

  • Obesity that occurs during monotonous feeding and overfeeding. In the initial stages is treated with a diet.
  • Oodinozu. Accompanied by the appearance of a yellow patina on the body of a parrot. It is treated with copper sulfate or drugs for special purposes.
  • Ichthyophthyriosis The body of the parrot is covered with white dots, the fish itches about the scenery. Against the disease there are many drugs like copper sulfate and malachite green.
  • Tuberculosis. The infected individual loses color and appetite, becomes lethargic. In the early stages, treatment with kanamycin is possible.
  • Poisoning. If there is an excess of harmful nitrogen compounds in the water, increase the aeration and replace one-third of the volume of water. To prevent poisoning of fish, on time and qualitatively clean the aquarium.
  • Many keep pelvicahromis in aquariums. Bright color and peaceful disposition cause delight in many aquarists.

    The price for a parrot cichlid depends on the size.

    Size, cmprice, rub.
    Until 3120

    Pelvicahromis is also interesting because its color varies depending on mood and well-being. During spawning, parrots become especially bright.

    If the parrots are stressed, the colors become less saturated.
