Peculiarities of the content of auratus fish

Despite the rapid development of biological sciences, some creatures of nature are still little studied. Among them is the gold parrot fish, or auratus. Bright coloring of scales, beautiful body shape and unique lifestyle makes it interesting for all ichthyologists and aquarists.

At the same time, keeping fish at home requires special skills and training.

The maintenance of auratus at home requires special skills and training.

The first mention of the fish appeared in 1897. It was found in the African lake of Malawi, with the largest accumulation of representatives of the species found on the southern shores of the reservoir between the reef of Yalo and Nkot Kota.

When searching for residences, auratus melanochrome of gold prefers areas with a large accumulation of stones and coats. In most cases, gold parrot families lead a polygamous lifestyle and consist of only a male and a few females.

If individuals do not have their own territories, they become lonely and only occasionally form groups of 8–10 fish.

The diet of the auratus consists of algae, which densely cover rocks and cliffs. Also as food creation can use:

The peculiarity of the representatives of the species Melanochromis Auratus is the different color of the body of males and females. The former are painted in dark colors and have several yellow and blue stripes on the body, and the latter, on the contrary, have a yellow body and dark stripes.

It is because of this unique property that many people dream of seeing several pairs of tiny fish in their tank. In the process of life, amazing creatures will massively destroy algae, and the need to buy large Plecostomus or other fish to clean the aquarium will disappear.

However, if there is no desire to breed fish, several females can be purchased, since in the absence of males they are less aggressive. As they develop, dominant females will begin to acquire the body color of the males.

As for males, they rarely make a similar change in color. The particular popularity of the species is due precisely to the delightful appearance.

In the biological description of a fish, its belonging to the family of cichlids under the name “mbuna” is mentioned. It includes 13 species with varying degrees of aggressiveness and some external differences.

Translated from the Malawian language mbuna means “fish that lives in the rocks.” In fact, the name ideally emphasizes the creature’s way of life, although there are also individuals that prefer open water areas.

They are called utaka.

Auratus cichlid (melanochromis auratus) – capricious inhabitant of the depths, which needs special care and attention. With home maintenance, he needs to provide the most comfortable conditions, close to the real environment.

Otherwise, the fish will become very aggressive and will intensively show their territorial requirements.

Inexperienced beginners often face the problem that after buying a golden parrot, other species of fish begin to die en masse. At the same time, male individuals hate themselves or females with similar color.

And although their size occasionally exceeds 11 centimeters, the behavior is incredibly aggressive.

Inexperienced beginners often face the problem that after buying a golden parrot, other species of fish begin to die en masse.

Auratus “Golden Parrot” is characterized by a unique appearance, which makes it a valuable find for aquarists. Among the key characteristics are:

  • elongated body;
  • rounded head;
  • small mouth;
  • elongated dorsal fin.

Also, fish have pharyngeal teeth, with which they freely tear large algae with hard roots. In a comfortable habitat, the average body length reaches 11 centimeters, although there are also larger individuals.

Life expectancy is 5 years.

The content of fish auratus in a home aquarium has a lot of difficulties and unpredictable moments. The golden parrot is one of the aggressive representatives of the ichthyofauna, so the proximity to other aquatic creatures almost always ends in disrepair.

Males are considered the most malicious, they should be kept either with outwardly visible cyclides, for example, pseudotrophyses, or with fast species that are found in the upper layers. If we ensure that Auratus has the right care, then in a short time it will take root in the new conditions, start to eat algae and multiply.

Under natural conditions, melanochromis consume plant food, so in the aquarium they will quickly destroy any plants, with the exception of hard species such as anubias. In the aquarium, the fish are fed both live and frozen feed additives.

However, the priority should be put on food saturated with plant fiber. It uses food with spriulina, special food for African cyclides and other purchase kits, which can be found in any specialty store.

Breeding melanochromis is practically useless without proper experience with cichlids. The fact is that Auratus are very demanding and aggressive creatures., who hardly take root in common aquariums, strongly defend their territorial possessions and do not tolerate neighborhoods with other aquarium fish.

If you want to purchase a pair of these colorful creatures, you must first prepare a space for them and choose suitable neighbors. You will also have to regularly replace water.

Only if you follow the basic recommendations, the auratus will quickly get used to a closed environment, and soon they will start to eat algae and gain weight.

In Lake Malawi and streams flowing into it, a high percentage of mineral content is noticed. Together with evaporation, this causes a strong mineralization of water and the appearance of an alkaline reaction.

The waters of the reservoir have always been famous for their high purity and stability in terms of pH and chemical composition. Therefore, when domestic breeding cichlids, you should try to create the necessary parameters of water that resemble natural ones.

Auratusy are very demanding and aggressive creatures that hardly survive in common aquariums.

When choosing water, preference should be given to a hard alkaline liquid, without salinity. In some cases, the salt plays the role of a stiffening agent. In addition, melanochromis get along well in slightly salty water, so its presence is rarely allowed.

However, in a completely salted aquarium, the fish will not survive, as the maximum permissible percentage of salinity reaches 10 percent.

The volume of the aquarium for these creatures should be at least 190 liters. And if the owner of the fish plans to breed them or to place other creatures in the tank, then the optimal volume will be 450 liters.

Water is used only fresh, with the exception of certain circumstances, when you have to use salt.

When arranging the house for auratusov it is important to take care of the filtration system, which will ensure the proper movement of water. The role of the soil is played by small corals, which raise the level of acidity to the required parameters.

You can also buy in the store a special ground for freshwater fish.

Because of the resilient nature of the nature of the fish will get used to a certain level of pH, but to their growth and development were the most productive, it is better to provide comfortable conditions before placing the creatures in the aquarium.

Hardness indicators can be increased by coral rubble or aragonite sand, which are characterized by the ability to quickly dissolve in water and change its chemical composition.

A too high pH indicates a large accumulation of ammonia in the water. If you do not take appropriate measures, this can cause fatal consequences, including the death of the whole family of auratus.

To avoid such a development of events, it is enough to change the water in the aquarium in time.

Also, experts recommend putting into the aquarium all kinds of stone decorations, creating tunnels and caves. It is better to refuse a large number of plants, since they will be ruthlessly destroyed by golden parrots.

Fish in a special way grow well and develop in spacious tanks, where there is a place for free swimming.
