Peculiarities of keeping and breeding lionfish

The lionfish is often called one of the most dangerous inhabitants of the sea. This fish has long attracted the attention of divers and lovers of breeding marine fish. But in both cases you need to be careful with this inhabitant of the deep sea.

Despite the visual appeal, the fish has dangerous needles – they are very sharp and poisonous.

The body of the lionfish-zebra is dotted with a large number of long sharp and poisonous rays.

They call the fish not only the cape, zebra fish or lion fish – it is by this name that it is known to many. Its pectoral fins are very long, resembling wings or a lion’s mane.

A striped color of gray and red-brown shade served as a reason to compare it with a zebra. The fish belongs to the Skorpenov family. The length of thirty centimeters, rarely come across copies of more than fifty centimeters.

Weight on average is a kilogram. Scales smooth, rounded shape.

The head is large enough, there are outgrowths.

Mouth with an oblique incision, large. Color usually varies by habitat. The brown tint can be dark or light.

If the fish lives close to the shore, then there will be more dark tones. But regardless of the color, you can always see stripes on the body.

The structure of the needles is interesting – the grooves extend along the length, they are quite deep. The poisonous glands covered with a thin layer of skin are concentrated in them.

The fish lionfish lives in the Indian and Pacific. But recently its population began to be met on the coasts of Haiti, Cuba, and Florida.

More often they are found among the reefs.

Fish rarely moves during the day. In daylight, she prefers to hide among stones, corals.

They press their belly against the sand, and thorny fins are set apart – this is how they protect themselves. At dusk the lionfish goes hunting.

It is easy for her to swallow a fish, the length of which is up to twenty centimeters. Lionfish is a predator that hunts crustaceans, small fish. She resorts to two methods of food extraction:

  1. Active. Puts the victim into a narrow cave and immediately eats.
  2. Passive. It stiffens in one position, straightening its rays and fins. Small fish swim up to a beautiful “bush” and are eaten.

The lifespan is approximately ten years both in nature and in an aquarium.

The rays of the anal, thoracic and dorsal fin of the lionfish are dangerous due to the presence of poison in them. Of course, you can not fear for their lives with a needle with such a needle – the amount of poison is not enough to kill a person.

But after the injection, a person can begin to experience pain, lose consciousness, it is very dangerous for drivers.

Then the pain subsides. The injection site may slightly swell, numb. If you get a large dose of poison, then convulsions can happen, paralysis of the respiratory muscles, a violation of the heart.

Touching the needles of fish is not worth it, even if it is already dead, as the poison continues to act after its death.

If a person injected about the rays of a lionfish, then he immediately needs to swim out to the shore and hold the affected part of the body in water (45 degrees). You can heat the skin with a hair dryer – due to this, there will be a denaturation of poisonous proteins and toxins will cease to spread to the tissues.

Despite the danger from the needles of the lionfish, she herself never attacks a person — he is simply not interested in her. The predator is protected only at the moment of danger. He never retreats from a potential adversary.

The lionfish repels attacks, turns its back to the enemy, trying to expose its main weapon so that the enemy stumbles upon the needles.

A person eventually develops immunity to this poison. At the second injection, the pain will be less pronounced, and so on.

Still, it is better not to risk it and try to avoid contact with the needles of the lionfish.

Lionfish can already be found in many home aquariums, pet stores. But you need to follow certain rules for care, so that the fish lived in comfortable conditions and did not pose a danger to its owner.

Many types of capefish living in the world’s oceans vary in size and color coloring.

First of all, you need to prepare for her aquarium with decorations. To do this, follow the following rules:

  1. The tank should hold 450 liters – no less.
  2. The small fish-neighbors will consume the lionfish for food, therefore, only large individuals or sedentary invertebrates can settle there.
  3. Aquarium equipped with a fluorescent lamp, special filters. Too bright lighting they do not like.
  4. Algae is required for a lionfish to hide in them. From the decor, choose stones, caves, large shells, corals.
  5. Every week you need to change in the aquarium 20% of the water to a new one. The optimum temperature is 25 degrees, the level of rigidity – 8.
  6. A powerful skimmer is used to move the water, but a few sections are left with a weak current, since the sails have a large sail area of the fins.
  7. It is better to choose a specific aquarium so that you can always watch the “pet”.

For stable growth and development requires a balanced menu. Usually it includes small fish and crustaceans.

Lionfish usually want to eat in the evening and at night, so they rarely feed them during the day.

Important components of the menu are freshwater crayfish, cardinals, guppies. But you should not feed her with goldfish – it will provoke the development of beriberi.

Zebra fish loves to hunt for live food, but can have a snack and a frozen one. If you plan to feed the fish such food, then you need to create a zone of turbulence in the aquarium – a piece of food gets into it, and the lionfish has the impression that it is moving.

For a meal, a fish eats up to ten medium-sized specimens, so it’s enough to feed it three times a week. Overfeeding is not worth it – the liver becomes fat and will cease to function.

With a good appetite, lion fish can kill itself.

Lionfish are predators, they swallow their prey entirely, and they serve as food: small fish, shrimps, crabs, clams

When feeding it is important to avoid contact with poisonous rays. To do this, make sure that the fish were away from the hole for the feed.

She can get angry and try to attack her hand.

Lionfish live well in pairs and groups. But for a large number of such individuals at home you need to buy a very large aquarium.

If you plan to breed this type of marine life, you should start with the main thing – to understand where the female is, and where the male is.

Belonging to a certain sex is determined only one year after the birth of the fish – it is then that the ripening period begins. Males are more massive, more females two centimeters long.

They have a prominent forehead, while the anal fin has a spot of orange color, while females do not have it.

Lionfish live a twilight lifestyle, daytime hiding in crevices or belly top at the ceiling of underwater caves

Mating occurs every night during the week of the lunate cycle. Males in such a period are distinguished by their aggression, so they must be fed with extreme caution.

After spawning, females begin to lay eggs in two portions. Each is enclosed in a mucous membrane, it is called a matrix or simply – eggs. Matrix has a ball shape with a diameter of five centimeters.

It fits up to two thousand eggs, but there are also cases when their number reaches twenty thousand.

The mucous pouch pops up and breaks on the surface of the water, releasing a huge amount of eggs.

In the aquarium it is very difficult to mate the lionfish, they are used to doing it in natural conditions, so it may take several attempts until the long-awaited caviar appears.

Lionfish are very beautiful, they are so interesting and diverse that you can talk about them endlessly. But they are also very dangerous inhabitants of the underwater depths.

Although if you observe the precautions and provide them with the required conditions, the exotic sea will please their owners with an interesting appearance and active lifestyle in the aquarium.
