Parrots Fish Photo

maintenance, care, compatibility

Before you get new inhabitants of the aquarium, you need to understand their types, types, characteristics of the content and other nuances. Certainly, the parrot is one of the best representatives of the water home world.

This is a unique pet with a bright color, lively character and very funny manners. It is noteworthy that for the breeding of the species, it took breeders several years and cross-breeding of fish from the order of South American type cichlids.

It was from them that the “sea elf” received the color brightness and the funny characteristic “beak.”

In the family of parrot fish, 10 genera and more than 100 species are distinguished. But only some of them are known and more common:

  • Red parrot The individual grows up to 25 cm, the color is predominantly red in combination with yellow, a distinctive feature is the beak, sometimes supplemented with sharp incisors and canines protruding to the outside. It is important that this fish changes its color several times as it matures. Natural loneliness in coral reefs does not affect good neighborly relations in the aquarium. By the way, it is the red parrot that is the most favorite inhabitant of beginning aquarists and the photos of fish can often be seen on sites. The pet’s nighttime rest is especially interesting – the fish at night creates itself a cocoon in the form of a cover made of mucus and prefers to sleep protected from all external influences.
  • Scar. Small representatives of the species, growing to 19 cm and having more than 50 species. The most famous are: dark, striped-bruised, Red Sea and guacamayia. The natural habitat is a coral reef, where fish feed on mollusks and some species of coral. But do not worry, aquarium parrots – Skara well belong to a variety of traditional food.
  • The green shish-thorn is an amazing representative of the fish family. To begin with, this “Petrovsky grenadier” grows to 100 cm or more, and the weight is also considerable – from 40 kg, such photos are often found on websites. But this all refers to the natural existence, aquarium representatives are much smaller, although here it will look like a “gulliver” among all other inhabitants. And do not forget that any quarrel of a green parrot with another pet can end in tears: using your forehead as a ram, the companion literally knocks the enemy “off his feet”, very skillfully attacking.

Of course, there is a parrot fish of other colors and colors: red, pearl, with a purple hue. Also there are representatives with various types of beaks.

And if you had the idea to start a couple of persons in your tank, you should think about the nature of other inhabitants, so as not to create unnecessary problems.

Immediately, we note that these scaly friends are distinguished by tranquility and peacefulness. But there are some points in the content of individuals necessary to create a normal environment for other pets.

  1. Nimble or calm fish that like to rake ground and disdain vegetation are the best friends of aquarium parrots.
  2. Angelfish – a problem may arise with them. A red parrot or another species mercilessly plucks algae where the scalar loves to hide. And after eating the twigs, the individual can pay attention to the neighbor herself, who is unlikely to enjoy the sea elf’s snooty character. Although in life there are examples of the normal coexistence of all types of fish, however, the aquarium should be at least 200 liters.
  3. Small fish – the subject of special “adoration.” The parrot fish will definitely try the little one on a tooth, without even noticing this fact. Therefore, if your friends are scaly friends less than 5 cm long, you do not need to tempt fate, get two aquariums.

Pelvicahromis pulher (lat. Pelvicachromis pulcher) or as it is also called cichlid parrot, and most often aquarium parrot fish is an excellent choice, especially among those aquarists who want to try to contain cichlids in the aquarium.

In addition to their very bright colors, they also differ in interesting behavior. But the most important thing that attracts aquarists is small size, peaceful behavior.

They can be contained in small aquariums and at the same time quite unpretentious to the parameters of water and types of food.

The aquarium parrot fish is calm enough for a cichlid fish, which can be kept in a general aquarium without fear that it will kill someone. Thick-grown aquariums love kribensis, and although they also like to dig deeper in the ground, they don’t pull out and touch the plants.

Like all cichlids, parrots love shelter, but also need an open spot for swimming, however, they mostly stay at the bottom. It is especially funny to watch parents with a flock of fry, gray and imperceptible, they instantly obey any order of the parents and dissolve literally before your eyes.

Red Three Hybrid Parrot – A Child of Human Hands

The red parrot (born blood parrot cichlid) is an unusual aquarium fish that is bred artificially and is not found in nature. It is characterized by a barrel-shaped body, large lips folding into a triangular mouth and a bright, uniform color.

In English-speaking countries, it is called Red Parrot Cichlid, we still have a three-hybrid parrot.
Do not confuse it with another cichlid, a small and bright fish, Pelvicachromis pulcher (Pelvicachromis pulcher), which is also called the parrot.

Cichlids do not differ intelligibility in partners, and create pairs with similar ones, and with other types of cichlids. This feature made it possible to get a lot of hybrids from different species of fish.

Not all of them are successful, some do not shine with color, others after such crossing become fruitless themselves. But there are exceptions …

One of the most famous and popular fish in an aquarium is a three-fold parrot, the fruit of artificial crossing. The horn flower is also a child of the genetics and perseverance of Malaysian aquarists.

It is unclear from what cichlids this fish came out, then apparently a mixture of cichlids from Central and South America.
Red fish parrot aquarium will be a wonderful acquisition for lovers of large, visible fish. They are shy, and should not be kept with large, aggressive cichlids.

They love aquariums with a lot of shelters, rocks, pots, which retire in fright.

The red parrot is an enthusiastic small fish that has the strength to stay active and mobile throughout the day. Fish maintenance requires a spacious aquarium with free swimming space: at least 200 liters of cubic.

It is recommended to build a pump over, all cichl like undercurrent.

Proper care of an aquarium parrot implies maintaining the permissible parameters of the aquatic environment: temperatures of 23-26 degrees Celsius, pH 6.5-7.5 pH. Aquatic parrots prefer oxygenated water, for which quality aeration is assumed.

Once a week you need to update half of the water tank, change some of the old water to fresh. The red parrot is jumping enough, so that the reservoir should be covered with a lid so that the fish would not end up behind the “house”.

In order to care for the fish was useful for her, you should not plant many decorations in the aquarium. Many cichlids are indifferent to them, since they themselves are not averse to building something new in the form of a nest. The red parrot can coexist with peaceful large fish, as well as with some predators. Tsikhlovaya fish are not averse to eat small fish (neon, gracilis), so this hooking should be avoided.

The red parrot has a small mouth, and can accidentally swallow small aquatic pets.

It is recommended to keep with arvanas, labo, black knives, middle South American cichlids, medium and large catfish, haracin and large barbs. The parrot is a peaceful fish, so there will be no attack on the listed neighbors.

It is not found in the wild, it was bred artificially in 1986 by gradually crossing several species of South American cichlids.

The parrot fish is a species of fish from the cichlidae group of perciformes, which belongs to the aquarium hybrids, artificially derived. The aquarium parrot fish went through a series of crosses, and in 1991, after a long research process, the species red parrot was bred.

These interesting cichlids conquer the hearts of aquarists with insane speed and enjoy wide popularity due to their interesting appearance and habits. Simple care, peaceful nature and good compatibility with many fish give them a great advantage over other cichlids.

Parrots have an oblong and high body, compressed on the sides. The most popular species of aquarium parrots is red parrot.

A dark streak runs along his body. The fins on the abdomen are colored bright red and the back is dark. Parrot fishes have one anatomical feature, which often leads to their death.

Fish have a head that resembles a beak in structure, which causes difficulties with the process of eating food. Their small mouth also opens vertically at a low angle.

Often, parrots die from starvation.

Parrot females are distinguished by their smaller size, but greater body weight, as well as by a different structure of the fins. The dorsal fin is highlighted by a golden frame and has several spots on the tip, while the caudal fin is chopped off and also has spots.

Aquarium parrots can reach sizes in captivity up to 15 cm. And how much these fish live in an aquarium depends directly on their living conditions.

Parrots usually live for up to 10 years if they are properly cared for. The red parrot can recognize the owner and show it with its twisting movements on the front wall.

In addition to the red parrot fish are also in other colors, there are orange, yellow, purple, green parrots.

Parrot aquarium fish are playful and inquisitive in nature, lively and live happily with their relatives. To provide them with comfortable conditions, you need a large and spacious aquarium of 200 liters with a top lid so that the fish do not jump out of it.

A filter simulating the flow is highly recommended in the tank, since in nature cichlids live in running water. The main water parameters: temperature 22-26 ° C, hardness 6-7.5 °, acidity 6. Parrot fish will also need powerful aeration, since the water must be rich in oxygen.

A third of the volume of water should be replaced regularly. Dirty water can lead to the appearance of the disease in the form of the appearance of dark spots on their body.

The red parrot is not picky about the presence of live vegetation in an aquarium, but likes to build nests on its own, digging holes and thereby changing the bottom landscape. Lighting should be diffused, the soil in the form of small or medium pebbles.

Proper maintenance of parrots should mainly involve a sufficient number of shelters for all the fish.

The red parrot is not capricious in the diet, loves to eat live food in the form of moth and small dry food. In order to avoid fading, the scales of the parrot must be fed with a special food containing carotene, which contributes to the acquisition of a reddish color to maintain the brightness of the color of the body of the fish.

Feed the parrots should be several times a day in small doses and supplement their diet with herbal supplements, vegetables and bread. But do not overdo it with overfeeding these voracious fish, so as not to pollute the water.

The remains of food can rot, and the fish will eat it anyway, which will lead to fish disease.

Reproduction in the aquarium conditions of parrots has not yet been crowned with success, no matter how favorable the parameters are created or how experienced aquarists try. The males of parrots are sterile and unable to reproduce offspring.

However, it is enough for the fish to change the water parameters a little so that they instinctively begin to prepare their breeding by starting the construction of nests. Aquarium fish pits in the ground and change the surface of the aquarium bottom.

It is very interesting to observe the process of nuptial games of parrots, after which sometimes females can lay eggs, which will remain unfertilized. However, some specialized firms engaged in breeding these fish say that the hatched fry are gray-black in color and become colored by 5 months.

At the moment, Western aquarists are fighting to stop the reproduction of these fish by artificial means.

Aquatic parrots have a peaceful nature and have good compatibility with many fish. The red parrot used to stay in the lower layer of water, so it is best to pick up its neighbors fish swimming in the upper level of the aquarium to avoid conflicts.

Especially it concerns the period of their spawning, when males start to show excessive aggression.

However, it is better to sit in the neighbors not quite small fish such as neon and gracilis, which they can accidentally swallow despite their small mouth. It is not recommended to move the slow moving fish.

The red parrot has optimum compatibility with large catfish, arvanoy, medium-sized cichlids, labo, black knife fish, large barbs and haracin.

Diseases caused by external infections are not as dangerous for parrots as their own, which are not so easy to diagnose and treat. Dark spots on the body may indicate poor water quality, after which you need to replace the water and siphonit soil. If the red parrot lies on the bottom or swims poorly, it is a sign of poisoning or overeating.

Usually, these diseases are provoked by the fact that the fish do not eat the food immediately, but can be taken over almost a day later, as a result of which poisoning occurs. These diseases are treated by jigging fish into a separate aquarium with high-quality aeration and dissolve metronidazole and methylene blue in water.

The appearance of white spots and grains on this cichlid’s body indicates the onset of the disease ichthyophthyriosis, which is treated with a special medicine and at the same time changes the water to clean and increases its temperature not higher than 28 ° C.

Parrot fish can perfectly decorate any aquarium, giving the owner great pleasure with his amusing behavior and curiosity. They do not need painstaking care, it is enough to observe proper feeding and ensure the correct composition of water.

Small fish live together with other peaceful neighbors and do not cause their extraordinary trouble in the aquarium.

This type can be called the most suitable for beginner aquarists. They are unpretentious, friendly.

For the comfort of the fish in the aquarium should always be overgrown plants, snags, various houses and shelters.

If a dwarf parrot does not find a cozy and reliable shelter, it will start digging itself for shelter under stones or algae roots. The bottom of the aquarium is better to fall asleep with small or medium pebbles. This species needs constant neighborhood.

If some individuals are long enough to be alone, then later it will be difficult for them to get along with other fish.

For quality care for parrot fish, the following conditions should be ensured:

  • water hardness should be between 6-15 °
  • comfortable temperature of keeping parrot fish 24-26 ° С;
  • Be sure to follow the continuous filtration and aeration;
  • once a week do a substitution of a tenth of water;
  • You can feed your pets with black bread, but vegetable food is preferable.

To parrot aquarium fish retain their bright color, they need to give specialized food with carotene. Although this species is very peaceful, in the period of spawning fish may show aggression.

When breeding parrot fish, novice aquarists may encounter some diseases. As soon as your pets feel the slightest deviations, they immediately begin to change color: dark spots will appear. Often this symptom indicates an increased amount of nitrates in water.

The solution to the problem is to replace half of the water in the aquarium and run it through a siphon. As soon as you notice that one of the fish has sunk to the bottom or has become noticeably sluggish to swim, immediately drop it into quarantine.

The treatment is carried out by adding methylene blue to the septer until a pale blue tint of water appears. Be sure to increase aeration during quarantine.

Also add 0.5 g of kanamycin and half a tablet of metronidazole to water. In a week, your pet should recover.

“Semolina” also hit this kind of fish. As soon as a fish appeared in the aquarium with characteristic white grains on the body, you immediately need to siphon the soil and add a specialized preparation at the indicated dosage.

Next, change half the water daily until the disease disappears.

Novice aquarists sometimes wonder how much the parrots live. It all depends on the quality of care.

On average, this type of fish can live up to 8-9 years.

The male of this type of fish starts only one pair, because it is better for future producers to initially grow in a separate aquarium. Its volume should be at least 40 liters, there we select 8-10 fry.

If you don’t set them apart, then during the spawning period it is better to keep parrots with species that live in the upper layers of the water in order to avoid hassles.

Fish are ready for breeding at about one year old. At the time of readiness, the males find a mate and choose a shelter. They do not allow anyone there.

To stimulate spawning, the water temperature should be no higher than 28 ° C.

During the breeding season, the female parrot fish sweeps out about 300 reddish-brown eggs. Fish prepare in advance special shelters in the form of holes for the larvae after hatching.

After five days, the youngsters slowly begin to swim and eat plankton.
