Ornatus vulgaris – tips on keeping and breeding

Hello! Ornatus vulgaris is widespread in Guyana and in the eastern tributaries of the Amazon River. Schooling fish, interesting and very cute.

It is funny to observe their behavior, especially for males, who fluff their feathers cling to each other.

The high body of the common ornatus has a fatty fin. The back is olive-brown, the sides are yellowish with a red tint.

In good conditions, the color of the fish becomes blood-red. The belly of the ornatus is silvery and slightly yellow.

The tail fin has red spots, on the dorsal fin there is a white edging. The dorsal fin is strongly extended upwards, and its base is painted red.

Ornatus females are slightly smaller than males and have a not so bright color. Even the female from the male can be distinguished in the period before spawning – her belly is noticeably getting fatter. The German breeder developed a new form – white ornatus.

In natural conditions of life, ornatus does not grow more than 6 centimeters in length, and in aquariums even less.

As I mentioned above, ornatus are schooling and peace-loving fish, which prefer to keep in the middle layer of water under the cover of dense thickets of plants. As neighbors, small harazinki will suit them (thorns, red neons, black neons, minors).

To appreciate the beauty of this fish, it is advisable to buy a flock of 8-10 individuals. Aquarium water must have the following chemical parameters:

  • hardness: not more than 15 dH;
  • acidity: pH 6-7;
  • water temperature: 23-24 degrees.

It is also necessary once a week to replace about 20% of the water for fresh and feed a variety of food. It can be both bloodworm and ice cream food, dry food in flakes or pellets.

Difficulties in the care of a novice aquarist should not appear, at least I have not seen such.

Ornatus ordinary become mature at the age of 6-8 months. Among experienced aquarists walks the opinion that the best spawning occurs in three-year-old fish.

In order for a pair of fish to spawn, you will need to acquire a spawning volume of 10 liters. At the bottom you need to lay a separator grid and cover it with small-leaved plants.

Java moss for these purposes is ideal. The temperature of the water in the spawning aquarium should be increased by a couple of degrees compared to the general aquarium and The following chemical parameters:

  • stiffness not more than 3 dH;
  • acidity 5.8-6.7 pH;
  • The water layer in aquas is not more than 15 centimeters.

Before planting to spawn, they need to hold a couple of weeks apart. Try to provide them with a rich diet.

First, the male is placed in the spawning room, and the female is placed later. When the sun rises, the fish will begin to spawn, which usually passes in the thickets of plants from prying eyes.

During spawning, the female can sweep up to 500 small brown eggs. The fish is very sensitive to changes in atmospheric pressure, so by reducing the pressure you can push the fish to spawn.

As soon as spawning is over, the producers need to be removed from the spawning ground and the aquarium is shaded. After a day or two, the youngsters will appear from the eggs, and after another 4-6 days will be able to swim independently. As soon as the trifle begins to swim in the aquarium, then it will be possible to cut in the light and aeration.

Feed the fry with a well-known starter feed: rotifers, Artemia nauplii and Cyclops. About black ornatus you can read here, the information is more than available presented
