Ornatus fish

maintenance, care, compatibility

Ornatus ordinary or red (lat. Hyphessobrycon bentosi) is a rather large tetra, which has a nice color and interesting behavior. It is quite hardy and unpretentious, although it does not like drastic changes in the content and parameters of water.

To provide suitable conditions for ornatus, will have to try.
The fish is also called the white-fledged ornatus phantom.

Ornatus must be kept in a flock, at least 6 fish. But, despite the fact that this is a schooling fish, they will stick together only when they feel the need, for example, for large fish in an aquarium or when water parameters change.

Like other tetras, the ornatus red phantom fish loves aquariums densely overgrown with plants. Although in nature they live in soft and acidic water, they have long adapted to different conditions and take root well.

Ornatus is a small freshwater fish, belongs to the Kharatsinov family. Natural habitat – the Amazon River and the waters of French Guiana. It got to Europe in the 30s of the twentieth century, where it began to be bred as a decorative aquarium fish.

Ornatus ordinary has a small body 4-6 cm long. Life expectancy is from 3 to 5 years.

The symmetry of the body is elongated, flattened at the sides and narrowed at the tail. The fish has a two-blade tail, the dorsal fin is raised, there is also a fatty fin.

The color of the body of ornatus is different, each species has its own shade of scales and fins.

Ornatus ordinary – it is peaceful and unpretentious in the content of the fish. Allowed maintenance and care in the general nursery with a volume of 50 liters, with other small and peaceful fish.

Lighting should be moderate, not bright. For the fish, it is necessary to establish shelters in the form of dense thickets of plants, caves and snags, leaving the space of the swimming place. Prefer water with peat extract.

It is necessary to update the water once a week for 20% of the total volume of the aquarium.

It is necessary to install a powerful filter and aerator. Acceptable parameters of the aquatic environment: temperature 23-25 ° C, acidity of water 6.0-7.0 pH.

Feed the fish should be small live food (daphnia, Cyclops, frozen moth), combining it with a dry food for small fish.

Ornatus vulgaris becomes sexually mature at the age of six months. The stimulation to spawning is soft and sour water with a temperature of 2-4o higher than usual. At the bottom of the spawning should put Javanese moss and separator mesh.

Before spawning, producers should be given live protein-rich food. They breed for 3 days, after spawning, the female and male are transplanted back to the aquarium.

White-horned Ornatus (scientific name – Hyphessobrycon sp. “White fin”) lives in the wild in the Amazon River. Body length – 5 cm.

This is a peaceful schooling fish, which can be maintained with 5 neighbors of similar size, differing in peaceful behavior. The color of the fish is beautiful: silver scales, dorsal fin pointed and milky white, tail fin red-orange, the other fins are white with red edging.

Fish prefer thick vegetation and shade, as well as a sufficient amount of space for swimming.

Content in the aquarium is permissible with the following parameters: temperature 22-25 degrees, acidity 6.5-7.0 pH, hardness 8-12o. Once a week should be replaced with 20% water. For 8-10 adults, an 80-100 liter tank is recommended.

It feeds on live and dry food, as well as its closest relatives.

Ornatus Red is another representative of the Kharatsin family, which is cultivated in domestic aquariums. The symmetry of the body is almost identical to ordinary ornatus, but the body color is a different color. In the fish, the color of scales is light pink, in the dorsal part the color is brighter, on the belly it is golden.

The dorsal, caudal, and anal fins are colored bright red.

Look at the color of the body red ornatus.

Sexual dimorphism is noticeable – there is a dark speck on the male’s dorsal fin, in females this fin is white and rounded. There is also a small black spot on the body of the males near the gill covers; it is more pronounced in the female.

The size of the aquarium fish is 4-5 cm, it becomes mature at the age of one year.

To ensure proper care for the fish, it is better to settle with a flock of 8-10 such fish. You can choose a small fish tank, leaving enough space for decorations and swimming.

The best neighbors are small and calm species of the Kharacin fish family. Ornatus Red prefers warm water heated to a temperature of 22-25 ° C, with acidity pH 6.0-7.0 and hardness 2-8o.

To clean the water and soil from the remnants of food, organics and ammonia, install a filter in the tank, periodically siphon the bottom of the aquarium. Be sure to update 20% of the water 1 time per week.

Under conditions of captivity, ornatus red feeds on crushed live food, chopped pipemaker, dry food (but not often).

Ornatus vulgaris is a small aquarium fish belonging to the Kharatsyn family. In the wild, their habitat is the lower Amazon and the waters of Guiana.

Ornatus was first introduced to Europe in 1933, where, over time, they were bred as an aquarium fish.

The fish in the content is not very whimsical. It can be kept in a common aquarium with other fish. The volume of the aquarium may be small, from 50 liters.

The lighting is moderate.

These fish are very fond of various shelters, snags, grottoes and dense thickets, while there should be enough free space for swimming. Water is preferable to settled, enriched with peat extracts. In this case, it is desirable to carry out the replacement of about twenty percent of the water from the aquarium on a weekly basis.

Filtration and aeration of water is required.

For the content of ornatus, room temperature in water should be maintained at 23-25 degrees, pH 6.0 – 7.0. As the ornatus feed, it is better to use small live feed, for example, Cyclops, daphnia or small bloodworms, you can also combine it with dry food.

Ornatus reach sexual maturity in 6-8 months.

Water in spawning should be up to 15 centimeters, soft and acidic, and its temperature is 2-4 degrees higher than usual, at the bottom there are small-porous plants, such as javanese moss.

Before placing the ornatus in the spawn, the male and the female are kept separately for 1-2 weeks and are fed abundantly with live food. Marriage games continue for three days.

After spawning, ornatus are removed from the calf.

Detachment, family: haratsinovye.

Comfortable water temperature: 20 – 24 ° C.

Ph: 5.5 – 8.

Aggressiveness: not aggressive 0%.

Compatibility: non-aggressive, peaceful fishes (neons, tetras, sword-bearers, petsyli, ornatus, pulchera, lanterns).

Useful tips: Popular and beautiful fish – I recommend.

Description:

Ornatus is a small, slim, interesting aquarium fish. The body is elongated and flattened on the sides of the body.

Dorsal fin high, two-lobed tail fin.

Schooling fish, it is best to keep them in a spacious aquarium min. from 35 liters in a large group of 10 pieces.

Water parameters for content: dH up to 15 °; pH 6.5-7.0; t 23-26 ° C. In the aquarium, install a filter and aeration and weekly replace up to 20% of the volume of water.

Compatible with all peaceful fish. Do not plant them with large fish and predators.

Feeding aquarium fish must be correct: balanced, diverse. This fundamental rule is the key to successful keeping of any fish, be it guppies or astronotuses.

Article “How and how much to feed aquarium fish” talks in detail about this, it outlines the basic principles of the diet and feeding regime of fish.

In this article, we note the most important thing – feeding fish should not be monotonous; both dry and live food should be included in the diet. In addition, you need to take into account the gastronomic preferences of a particular fish and, depending on this, include in its diet ration either with the highest protein content or vice versa with vegetable ingredients.

Popular and popular feed for fish, of course, are dry food. For example, hourly and everywhere can be found on the aquarium shelves of food company “Tetra” – the leader of the Russian market, in fact, the range of feeds of this company is striking.

In the “gastronomic arsenal” of Tetra are included as individual feeds for a certain type of fish: for goldfish, for cichlids, for loricarids, guppies, labyrinths, arovan, discus, etc. Also, Tetra has developed specialized foods, for example, for enhancing color, fortified or for feeding fry.

Detailed information on all Tetra feeds, you can find on the official website of the company – here.

It should be noted that when buying any dry food, you should pay attention to the date of its production and shelf life, try not to buy food by weight, and also keep the food in a closed state – this will help avoid the development of pathogenic flora in it.

Ornatus is an interesting aquarium fish that lives in the waters of Guiana and the lower Amazon. The fish is very small – no more than 4 cm, if it is contained in an aquarium. It is characterized by an elongated body, flattened laterally and somewhat narrowed in the area of the tail.

Regardless of the species, ornatus are characterized by the presence of a two-cavity caudal fin, a rather high dorsal fin and a fat fin in relation to the body. Depending on the color, ornatus red and black (phantom) stand out.

To begin, we’ll talk about them.

There are also several species of the fish under consideration.

So, there is a whitenaceous ornatus. A very unpretentious fish that easily gets along with other non-aggressive species. Ornatus white-smelt can live in a 10-liter aquarium (a pair), but aquariums from 80 liters are more acceptable.

All questions of maintenance and breeding are similar with the view of Ornatus ordinary and will be discussed below.

There are also yulidohromis ornatus. But this fish belongs to a completely different family.

That is why it is necessary to contain yulidohromis ornatus taking into account very different rules and features.

Finally, you can hear about such a fish as elongatus ornatus (or pseudotrophy). Such a pseudotrophy also is not associated with ornatus ordinary.

Pseudotrofaus refers to cichlids. To care for this fish you need to know all the rules, due to which the pseudotrophyus feels comfortable.

Back to content

When breeding ornatus, it should be borne in mind that they mature in approximately 6-8 months.

When organizing a spawning one should proceed from the following:

  • water level should not exceed 15 cm;
  • water is needed quite acidic and soft;
  • the temperature level is a couple of degrees above normal;
  • the bottom is necessarily covered with small-pore plants.

The female and the male are divided into 10-14 days, during which they are fed abundantly with live food. After that, the fish are placed in the spawning room, where mating games last for three days.

It is very important that each fish be removed from the calf immediately after spawning.

In this way, Ornatus ordinary is quite convenient for the aquarium content of the fish. No special difficulties in caring for him does not arise.

Because of this, a considerable number of aquarists prefer that ornatus live in their underwater kingdoms.

Ornatus conditions of detention

Aquarists love ordinary Ornatus for the simplicity of the content. In addition, it is noted that the fish are much healthier than Neons and other representatives of the home water world.

They do not need much space for swimming, especially isolation from other types of fish. However, these fish are characterized by love for all kinds of shelters and caves.

Therefore, such conditions and they need to create a fish house. Snags and stones, dense thickets of aquatic plants and grottoes are ideal conditions in the aquarium for ordinary Ornatus.

It will be great if you also darken one of the corners of the fish dwelling for these modest inhabitants.

With regard to the parameters of water in the aquarium, it is recommended that the water there was “old”, enriched with peat extracts. Water temperature should be at least 23 degrees.

Stiffness must be maintained at a pH of 7.0. Acidity does not matter.

It is recommended to clean the aquarium where these small fish live once every 7-9 days.

All water for general cleaning should not be changed. It should be replaced by no more than 20% weekly. For comfort and optimal maintenance of Ornatus usual, it is recommended to install a filter in the aquarium.

In nutrition, these aquarium fish are not demanding.

For them, suitable live and small food in the form of daphnia and Cyclops, bloodworms and Artemia salina. The diet can be enriched with dry feed, as well as include herbal supplements. It can be pounded delicate plants: duckweed and peristristis, lettuce leaves and dandelion, spinach leaves.

Pre-vegetable feed should be scalded with boiling water.

As for the nature of the fish, they are peaceful. The same calm and small-sized fish will suit them as neighbors.

If you provide ordinary Ornatus with adequate conditions for life in the aquarium and good nutrition, then there will be no problems with its content. The fish will long please the eye with a bright appearance and calm.

COMPATIBILITY

Compatibility of Black Ornatus: you can keep in a species aquarium either with similar or smaller fish (Tetras, Rasborami), suitable in character. Not bad get along with other Kharacin.

Reproduction

When the fish reach sexual maturity, almost the entire flock begins to swim lively back and forth along the walls of the aquarium. Such “races” can last for quite a long time – sometimes the fish circle in this way for up to 15 hours in a row.

At first it is impossible to discern which of them decided on their choice and formed a pair, but later everything becomes clear.

Before spawning, the male and the female are isolated from each other and strongly fed. Separately, they should spend a few days – usually 10-14. Then the reproduction of ornatus continues in the spawn, in which the female lays its eggs the next day or several days later.

Eggs are not deposited in any particular place, as the female simply throws them out of her body, coming into contact with the male – this happens several times.

Ornatus pink multiplication occurs somewhat differently: the male swims up to the female and beats out her body eggs with blows. At one time, the female allocates from 7 to 12 eggs. After spawning, adult ornatus are removed from spawning.

In total, spawning can be delayed up to 400 eggs.

Why should spawning ornatus be held in spawning? For the reason that in the general aquarium, the offspring do not leave a chance to survive: both the tired parents themselves and other fish are not averse to profit from caviar and newborn fry.

Ornatus are small aquarium fishes that represent the family of haracin. In the wild, ornatus lives in the waters of Guiana and the lower part of the Amazon.

These fish were brought to Europe in 1933, and since that time aquarists have bred them at home.

Beautiful aquarium fish ornatus grow to four centimeters in captivity and to six centimeters in nature. They have an elongated body, which is flattened from the sides, and narrows to the tail.

The tail fin in a two-cavity fish, the dorsal fin is high, there is also a fatty fin.

The color of these aquarium fish depends on their species. So, ornatus black is painted in dark gray with black specks in a violet luminous border. All fins, except for the pectorals, are also black.

Black ornatus females shimmer with a red-brown tint, like all young individuals. That is why it is very difficult to immediately determine the sex of the fish.

If the color of the calf in the fish is pink, and golden play is visible on the abdomen, then it is ornatus red. In this species of ornatus, the floor is determined by the shape and color of the dorsal fin: in females it is white at the tip, and in males it is black or bright red.

The most common species is Ornatus vulgaris, which is colored silver, and the graceful fins are decorated with orange specks. The dorsal fin is usually black or orange with black specks. The most exotic species is considered yulidohromis ornatus, brought from the waters of Lake Tanganyika.

The elongated bodies of golden color on each side are decorated with black stripes. These fish are often called “golden parrots” for a luxurious bright color.

The unpretentious and beautiful fish is white-fledged ornatus, so named because of the elongated white dorsal fin, which colorfully looks against the background of a light silver body.

Exotic lovers will appreciate the blue elongatus ornatus fish with vertical black stripes on the sides and the ornatus phantom, which may be black with a blue tint, silver or red color.

Quite rarely in aquariums one can see pseudo-trophy of ornatus – fish of the genus melanochromis. There are about 125 species and subspecies with various colors.

Ornatus – unpretentious fish. They do not need large space and isolation from other types of fish.

Ornatusa are shelter lovers, so there must be snags, thick algae bushes and various grottoes in their aquarium. It is great if it turns out to darken one of the corners of the aquarium, so that the disturbed inhabitants will have a place to hide.

It is better if the water is “old”, enriched with peat extracts. You can replace no more than 20% water. The temperature should not be below 23 degrees, and its hardness must be maintained at a level of 6.0-7.0 pH.

Ornatus are eaten by small live (daphnia, cyclops, bloodworms) and non-living food.

The aquarium, where your ornatus live, should be cleaned every 7-9 days. As already mentioned, all water should not be immediately replaced.

To make the fish comfortable, install a filter in the aquarium.

In order to breed ornatus with success, two 6-8-month-old individuals need to be settled into a container with water two degrees higher than normal. The bottom is covered with Javanese moss.

Often the duration of marriage games does not exceed three days. When the female postpones the eggs, it is better to sow the pair, as the slightest change in habitat conditions provokes the male to aggression, which leads to the destruction of the eggs.

In general, ornatusa are peaceful aquarium fish. If you provide them with suitable living conditions, proper care and a balanced diet, then they will be happy for a long time with a bright and unusual appearance.

Black ornatus are unpretentious, but it is better to keep them in a flock, from 7 individuals. It is in it that they can open up. They are very active fish and the aquarium should be quite spacious, about 80 liters or more.

Especially if you have a decent flock. Ideally, soft water is needed for black ornatus, but they are perfectly adapted to local conditions and tolerate different parameters well.
An aquarium with black phantoms should be well planted with plants, preferably with floating on the surface, but it should be where the fish will be able to swim freely. Dimmed light and dark ground beneath emphasize the beauty of black ornatus.

Caring for a standard tank – regular water changes, up to 25% and filtration is desirable, with a moderate course. Water temperature is 23-28C, ph: 6.0-7.5, 1 – 18 dGH.

Yulidohromis: content, description, types, photo-video review

For the peculiar outlines of the head and bright coloring, the golden yulidohromis (Julidochromis ornatus) was nicknamed by the lovers of African cichlids by the golden parrot. The similarity with the bird gives it a slightly curved down, resembling a beak snout, and in coloring it is perhaps one of the most beautiful yulidochromis found in aquariums.

The lower body of the fish is golden orange. From the elongated snout to the caudal fin there are two wide black shiny stripes – one in the middle of the body, the other along the back, the space between them is milky white.

Unfortunately, due to closely related crossings, the J.ornatus line, which has been in our country since 1973, has greatly degenerated and faded. It is represented by rather inconspicuous fishes with a dirty yellow, less often yellow, body color, along which two thin, often intermittent dark stripes pass.

The aquarium for keeping J.ornatus does not have to be large. For a pair of fish, an aquarium of 20 liters is suitable.

A 60-liter pond with plants, soil and stone terraces is quite sufficient for a group of 6-10 hulids.

Water should be the following parameters: hardness 8-20 °, pH 6.9-9.5, temperature 21-32 ° C (optimal – 26 ° C). Aeration and filtration required

water, weekly replacement of a quarter of its volume.

Ornatus yulidokhromisov feed can be any live food: the crank of the appropriate size, Koretry, well-washed pipemaker. During the summer period, golden juliochromis gladly eat various zooplankton: daphnia, cyclops, “live dust”.

When constructing an aquarium, it should be remembered that golden parrots in nature live in crevices, among stones, in small caves. Therefore, in the aquarium it is necessary to make several rocky terraces, better at different ends.

You can put large mollusk shells on the bottom (if they fit into the overall interior) – their yulidochromis also include their own territory.

When the grown-up fish are divided into pairs, they occupy a certain space and protect it from other fish. However, they do not really bother their neighbors, especially if they are fast and nimble.

The fact is that the mouth at yulidohromisov is small and the jaws are not strong.

Reproduction yulidohromis ornatus. Fish ripen by the year, sometimes somewhat earlier, with a length of 4-6 centimeters (maximum – 11 centimeters).

Having taken a fancy to the cave, they lay up to 40 in it, usually 10–15 green eggs, attaching them mostly to the “ceiling” of their house in the form of compact masonry.

Golden yulidokhromisa can rightly be called a “turncoat.” Often, in search of food or when exploring a territory, he slides freely on his back, then dying in place, then turning over, then speeding up the movement, then slowing it down. At the same time, in the darkest places, for example, between stones, he turns on his “lights” – the turquoise flickering edges of unpaired fins, the luminous touch under the eye, the gleam of “eyebrows”.

Floating – like “Nautilus”, lost among the underwater reefs.

When two fish meet, especially if they are a couple, the exchange of ritual postures begins: the fins shrink and unclench, the male performs his mating dance in front of the female, then follows a series of bows and turns, and the fish change places.

After spawning, the clutch is mainly looked after by the male, and the larger female is engaged in the protection of the nearby territory, occasionally replacing the male on duty. At this time, fish is better to give floating feed or feed them in the immediate vicinity of the shelter. At a temperature of 26-27 ° C, on the third day, caviar leaves helpless larvae with greenish-gray yolk sacs.

With full tenacious threads of mucus, they are attached to the walls of the shelter and hang down the tail, swaying slightly on the current created by the male under them.

After 5-7 days, the yolk sac in the larvae dissolves, and they slowly and carefully disperse along the stony bed in search of food.

Small black thin fry are practically invisible in the cracks and hollows of granite, and only by the behavior of the male and female can you guess that they are walking and guarding their offspring. At this time, the parents become nervous and aggressive.

True, worries about fry force them to keep closer to the caves, but still get some fish. This is mainly soma – antsistrusy, loricaria, etc., trying to get into the empty shelter.

Tough measures are applied to the particularly unreasonable ones: the couple rushes at the violator, seizing his fins with anger. After such an attack, even the most desperate neighbors rush to the opposite corner, often half burying in the sand or hiding behind the filter.

Younger swims greedily absorb the Nauplius Cyclops and Artemia, live dust, finely chopped tubule.

At about one month of age, the fry acquire the color of adult fish, but their general background is darker. A feature of the large fry of the “natural” line is their later coloring: they begin to “turn yellow” in 2-3 months.

But from early childhood they have shiny edges on unpaired fins, gleaming scales slightly, which is practically absent in the fish of the old line, with the exception of a dull shading under the eye.

Video yulidohromis ornatus – gold

Ornatus was brought from the upper reaches of the Colombian rivers Rio Muku and Meta. Since 1962, this fish has firmly settled in the aquariums of domestic amateurs and professional breeders.

The body of this fish is almond-shaped, flattened at the sides. The main decoration of ornatus is sail-like dorsal fin.

The adipose fin is small, and the caudal fin consists of two blades. The color of the scales in this fish is pale pink, slightly darkening on the back.

The belly is golden. The fins on the back and chest are bright, orange or bright red.

The red male phantom is different from the female: the male has a black speck at the end of the dorsal fin. The shape of the fin is also slightly different: in the female it is more rounded. The black spot in the gill cover is pronounced only in females.

By spawning, the male acquires a rich red color. Ornatus usually does not grow longer than 4.5 cm in captivity, whereas in the wild they can reach 8 cm in length.
