Family haratsinovye (Characidae).
Homeland neon red is Brazil, Venezuela and Colombia. It mainly inhabits shallow forest streams and lakes of the upstream Rio Negru, as well as in the Orinoco tributaries.
In the USSR, neon red was first introduced in 1961. Of all the neons, it stands out for the brightest color.
Neon red has a low, elongated and slightly flattened body on the sides. The tail fin is two-bladed. The back is painted in olive green with glitter.
Two stripes run along the body: one glowing greenish-blue, going from the snout to the fatty fin, the other brightly crimson, originates from the middle of the silver abdomen and ends at the base of the caudal fin. The scales are large, clearly visible on the luminous band, which almost completely fades in the dark and instead of it appears wide and short blue-violet. The red color becomes light brown.
Eyes bluish-green. The fins are transparent.
The edges of the dorsal and anal fins have a bluish-white edging.
Gender differences: male – convex edge of anal fin; the female is larger and thicker than the male, the edge of the anal fin is concave. Neon red in the aquarium grows from 4 to 5.5 cm.
Lifespan 5 years.
It is necessary to contain at least 10-15 individuals, so that all their bright coloring is not lost against the background of other fish. Neon is a red, gregarious, mobile and completely peaceful fish. Get along well with various small fish.
Swim in all layers of water.
In the content neon red unpretentious, quickly strays into a flock, which no longer disintegrates. Aquarium should be from 50-60 liters with shaded areas. For him, take a dark ground and various shelters.
Thickets of plants (all types of cryptocoryne, echinodorus, Ceylon fern, Javanese moss are suitable) are planted along the back and side walls of the aquarium, while keeping free space for swimming. Neon red poorly tolerate bright lighting, so the aquarium should be in a shaded place with a weak top light.
Water parameters for the correct content: hardness up to 5 °, pH 6.0-7.0, temperature 23 – 26 ° C. It is advisable to install a peat filter (or add peat filtrate) and monthly (1-2 times per month) change up to 10-20% of the volume water, and pour as it evaporates.
Neon red eats live (frozen cyclop, small bloodworm and daphnia, mosquito larvae), vegetable and high-quality dry food. In nature, they feed on insects and small species of crustaceans falling on the water surface.
The process of breeding neon red takes place in a closed aquarium with a volume of at least 15-20 liters (per 1 female and 2-3 males) and a water level of 20 cm. This requires old water: hardness 1-2 °, pH 5.0-5.5, temperature 24 -26 ° C. Water must be disinfected with an ozonizer or an ultraviolet lamp. A Ceylon fern or cryptocoryne is placed in an aquarium (the plants are carefully washed before this), and willow roots are placed on the bottom of the aquarium.
Spawning place in a place where direct sunlight does not fall and obscure it from three sides with black paper. For spawning, females with a thick belly and active males are selected.
Producers are kept separately for a week in water with a low temperature, and one day before landing in the spawner they stop feeding. Spawning begins with the onset of darkness and lasts 2-3 hours.
Productivity is up to 400 small, transparent with an amber shade of eggs.
After spawning, the producers are removed from the aquarium. The incubation period lasts 20-36 hours. After 5-6 days, the larvae begin to swim and feed.
At this time in the aquarium include poor lighting and aeration. Feed the fry with infusoria, nauplii of crustaceans, rotifers.
As they grow, they begin to feed them with vegetable food (food in the aquarium should always be, but in small quantities).
Grow very fast. During the first 2 weeks, the fry hide under the leaves of the plants. At the age of 3 weeks, the fry appear to have a luminous streak, and the eyes begin to glow.
At 5 weeks, the fry completely become the color and shape of adult fish and are transplanted into a common aquarium.
Puberty neon red reaches to 8-10 months.
