One of the most popular fish for breeding in the aquarium is the mossy barb. This waterfowl is appreciated for its unusual color. This species has a fluorescent body, which can be cast in green or blue, creating a magnificent glow in the aquarium.
Individuals are unpretentious, playful, so their content does not give the aquarist much trouble.
Mossy barb is a rather popular type of aquarium fish, which is valued for its color.
The Sumatran barb mutant lives in the waters of Thailand, Sumatra and Colombia. Most often they choose still waters, small tributaries with a high oxygen content.
These fish love to swarm in the vegetation and sandy bottom, so it is necessary to create similar conditions in the aquarium.
In the natural environment, individuals feed on various insects, algae, and invertebrates.
As for the appearance, this fish has a rounded torso, high back. The head of the barb has an unusual pointed shape.
The size of these fish is quite small, about 5-7 centimeters. On the body and tail there are fins, the inner side of which is colored red. But there are no black stripes characteristic of fish.
The main difference between these fish is the face: during spawning, it changes its normal color to bright red. Life expectancy in aquarium conditions is about 7 years, naturally, if the rules for caring for moss bar are observed.
Like all representatives of barbs, the mutant feels perfectly in captivity, so this fish is ideal for aquarium content. At the same time, aquatic inhabitants do not need any special care.
Enough to keep clean, regularly update the water and feed, actually perform the same actions as with other inhabitants of the aquarium.
Barbs get along well with fast fish: Sumatran barbs, danio rerio, ternetsii, Congo.
Since the green barb is artificially bred, it is quite enduring, rarely gets sick, so even lovers or beginners can keep it.
These aquarium fish are very active, moreover, they swim at all levels, but prefer open areas, so it is better to acquire large tanks so that the fish can move freely. It is best to choose long aquariums: barbs love to swim for long distances.
If you plan to plant water plants, it is better to choose a place for them in the back or on the sides, so that the central part remains open. In order for aquatic inhabitants to feel like in their natural environment, they need to equip their bodies of water, sow vegetation, and put gravel and sand on the bottom. In addition, create places in which they could hide.
For this great stones, snags of medium size.
It is necessary to keep a mossy barb in a closed tank so that the fish do not accidentally jump out and die. In addition, it is necessary to equip the tank with a good filtration system.
And Mossy barbus when maintained in an aquarium needs the following conditions:
- water temperature – 20-26 degrees;
- lighting – moderate;
- hardness – 2-25 dGH;
- acid-base balance – 6.5-7.
Do not forget about the regular replacement of water, for the representatives of the barbs it is extremely important. The water accumulates the waste products of aquarium inhabitants, the remnants of food that rot, all sorts of phosphates and nitrates, all of which adversely affect the fish.
In addition, due to evaporation, the water hardness increases.
It is advisable to feed him the most diverse, to maintain the activity and health of the immune system.
This variety is enough to replace only 25% of the total, and they will feel great. But if the aquarium is small and densely populated, then it will have to be replaced every week.
In addition, you need to daily remove from the water the existing debris, remnants of food, you can do this with the help of a siphon. Only such conditions allow to grow beautiful and healthy fish.
Active barbs get along well with almost all the inhabitants of the aquarium. You can hook up other fast-swimming fish to this species, but they can bite them for fins, especially if they are knocked down in flocks.
Immediately it should be noted that mossy are especially aggressive, when living alone in an aquarium. Therefore, it is preferable to keep at once several individuals or even a small group, then they will be engaged in each other.
But the slow representatives of aquatic fauna are not very suitable for nimble barbs, they will constantly bite them for long fins. These fish include cockerels and marble gouram. In order to create a beautiful composition it is better to populate the water world at once with several varieties of barbs, these can be albinos and a Sumatran look.
This will diversify the aquarium, make it more interesting and contrasting.
It is important to keep mutant barbs in a flock, in quantities of 7 or more, this significantly reduces their cockiness, as hierarchy is established and attention switches.
These aquarium fish are omnivorous, in fact, like their relatives. They can give dry food, as well as feed with fresh and frozen foods.
It is necessary to purchase only good quality food, they pollute the aquarium less. If you plan to feed aquatic inhabitants with food, then the diet should include:
- 60% of live food – it can be bloodworms, tubule;
- 30% plant food in the form of spinach, lettuce leaves or dandelion flowers;
- 15% of combined feed intended for barbs.
But you should not give a lot of feed or make immediately for the whole day. The fact is that these aquatic inhabitants do not know the measures, and they will eat everything at once, therefore it is necessary to calculate the dosage.
It is better to make several supplements per day, once in the morning, then in the evening, then waterfowl pets will not get obesity.
It is quite simple to propagate this type of fish, but first it is necessary to distinguish the female mutant barbus from the male, in order to do this it is necessary to wait for spawning. During this period, the male red nose, the female does not.
Also, the male has a brighter color and, as a rule, they are slightly smaller.
Sexual maturity in these green fish begins already at 6 or 7 weeks, as soon as they grow to three centimeters in length.
At this time, it is necessary to choose from the flock a pair that is planned to be propagated; for this, the largest female is selected and the male painted in a bright color.
It is best to transplant this pair into a separate container, the volume of which should be at least 50 liters. Moreover, it is also necessary to place aquatic plants there, since caviar is tossed on them.
And also the tank must have a filter and heater. To parents could not eat offspring, set a special marble substrate, then they will not be able to swim up to the caviar.
As soon as all the caviar is fertilized, the parents must be removed in order to avoid eating the caviar.
Besides, need to provide:
- water temperature – 25-27 degrees;
- lighting – 40 W;
- stiffness is average.
Two weeks before spawning a couple should be divided. During this time, exclusively live food is given as food, it can be bloodworm, artemia and other insects.
After that, the pair is reconnected, and the first courtship of the male after the female begins within a few hours, they begin to swim together, spread the fins.
As a rule, the next morning the female begins to spawn, and this process can be quite lengthy. The fact is that at a time it lays a maximum of three eggs, and their total amount can be up to 700 pieces, and sometimes even more.
As soon as spawning is over, both parents are removed from the spawning grounds, since they can simply eat caviar. The fry begin to hatch on the second day, but they need to be given time to adapt.
And after 5 days, you can move them into a common container, where they will begin an independent life. As for feeding, at the very beginning make a liquid purchased feed or egg yolk.
And on the second day, you can add protein foods, for example, the nauplius of Artemia.
