Macrognatus aquarium fish: photos, keeping and feeding, breeding and breeding

Natural habitat of macrognatus. India, Myanmar, Thailand. With whom just do not confuse this unusual fish, as it is just not called. She can be eels, catfish, and loaches.

But it has nothing to do with, except that she is also a fish. There are only one family in the trunk-trunk-like detachment – the trunk-nose, sometimes they are called prickly eels, but this is figurative.

Macrogatuses grow large up to 40 cm, in the homeland it is a delicacy. In an aquarium, macrognathuses are usually smaller, about 20–25 cm.

Peaceful fish with twilight and night activity. They feed on a variety of invertebrates, a favorite food of mosquito larvae, a tubule and earthworms.

For the sake of caution with adults, small fish should not be kept to prevent them from being eaten. Inanimate food get used to eat not all individuals, especially dry food. We have some fish ate squid and cod meat, cut into long slices.

But there were Makrognatus individuals feeding only on live food.

For Makrognatus soil in the aquarium is required, and there should not be pebbles with sharp edges. Fishes love to dig in, sticking their nose out of the ground.

If you deprive them of this opportunity, skin diseases can begin. In connection with the underground way of life of mucus, fish produce an excessive amount with the expectation of rubbing off the stones during bury.

When the content without soil mucus is not rubbed off, which causes inflammation of the skin. Aquarium must be tightly covered, because It happens that the fish get out, especially in the corners of the aquarium, equipment wires and ducts.

Photo Makrognatus can be seen on the right.

With the content of Makrognatus, the water parameters do not have special significance, but the water must be clean, continuous filtration and aeration are obligatory, the temperature is 20-28C. Fish react positively to salted water, especially when they begin to skin disorders.

Fish breeding is difficult. Although spontaneous spawning occurs, it is usually necessary to resort to gonadotropic injections.

Macrognathus reach sexual maturity after a year. A mature female Macrogatus is much fuller than a male; you can even see eggs. During the spawning period, the anus of the fish swells, the female has an ovipositor, the male has a seed tube.

The activity of macrognatuses significantly increases, they almost do not dig in the ground, the males constantly pursue females. A couple of fish are planted for spawning or two males on one female.

To avoid caviar eating by manufacturers, a plastic net is placed on the bottom. It is necessary to provide powerful aeration and flow, the water should be clean and fresh, Ph about 7, temperature 26C. the female eats about a thousand eggs (fecundity depends on the size of the producers).

Incubation lasts 3 days, after 3 days the fry begin to swim. Makrognatus babies are fed with rotifers, nauplii of Artemia and Cyclops, then a microworm, small Cyclops, Artemia.

You can buy Macrogatus in a specialized nursery. You can find out the price of Macrogatus fry on the bulletin board.
