Leporin Arcus: description and content

Leporinus Arkus or Krasnoguby Leporin, scientific name Leporinus arcus, belongs to the Anostom family. Not recommended for beginners.

For Leporin arcus need a large aquarium with a capacity of 250 liters. A dark ground is placed on the bottom, snags and large stones are placed on it. Fish love a large amount of vegetation, but due to the fact that they spoil living aquatic plants, it is more practical to arrange an aquarium with artificial plants. The fishes are aggressive and pugnacious from the young age, therefore for the selection of neighbors for them it is necessary to approach with special responsibility.

They should be of similar size and activity. All these qualities are answered only by cichlids, it is with them. Leporin Arcus perfectly share the space of the aquarium. Swims in all layers of water.

There are frequent cases of jumping of fish from the aquarium, so you need to cover it with a lid. They love the circulation of water.

Replacing water is partially about 1-2 times per month. Optimum conditions of maintenance: temperature 24-27 ° С, hardness up to 20, acidity of water 5.8-7.5.

Live up to 18 years.

Omnivores. Preference is given to live animal food (bloodworm, shredded shrimp, etc.) and frozen.

They enjoy eating shoots of spinach, lettuce and other plants, eating algae with drifts and glasses in an aquarium.

By the age of three, the fish become mature. At this time, their size is approximately 15-17cm.

Spawning seasonal, double or gregarious. For breeding, clean, softened slightly alkaline water in a separate aquarium is better suited.

Spawning is made according to general requirements. The female and male are placed in it (possibly several males).

During the day mating games take place between the fish, after which the male presses the female and strikes her – “knocks out” caviar. In total for one spawning, the female can sweep up to 50 thousand eggs that settle to the bottom. Eggs amber color.

The incubation period is from 36 to 50 hours. Fry quickly grow, adding in growth each month to 1.5 cm.

In the first weeks of life, their food is microplankton.

They originate from South America from numerous river systems, including the Orinoco, flowing through the territory of Venezuela, Guyana, Suriname and French Guiana. They live in various biotopes: from moderate rivers to calm floodplain lakes and marshes.

Brief information:

  • The volume of the aquarium – from 700 liters.
  • Temperature – 20–28 ° C
  • PH value – 6.0–7.5
  • Water hardness – 1–12 dGH
  • Substrate type – any
  • Lighting – moderate or subdued
  • Brackish water – no
  • Water movement – mild or moderate
  • Fish size – 25–30 cm.
  • Food – any feed with herbal ingredients
  • Temperament – conditionally peaceful
  • Contents in a group of 3-4 individuals

An omnivorous species, in nature, feeds predominantly at the bottom with algae, invertebrates and organic detritus. In the home aquarium will take a variety of products, such as dry flakes, pellets, frozen or live food.

It is important that the products include a large number of herbal ingredients.

Peculiarities of behavior depend on the number of jointly contained fish. One by one, the Red-lip Leporins can proceed, chasing more than small neighbors in the aquarium.

When in a group of 3-4 individuals, they become more tolerant to other fish of comparable or slightly smaller size.
