Labeotrofeus ordinary: conditions in the tsikhlidnik

Hello, friends! We continue the cycle of articles devoted to the family of tsikhlovyh and we consider today another resident of Lake Malawi called Labeotrofeus ordinary.

This fish prefers to stay near the rocky coast, densely overgrown with algae. But there are cases when labeothrofeus was met at great depths.

The body of the labotrophus is long and flattened at the sides. The structure of the oral apparatus allows the fish to scrape algal deposits from stones.

In nature, there are a huge number of color variations, but the most common body color is light blue. There are 2 stripes on the head of the fish, about 10 pieces on the body.

The color of the dorsal fin can be either red-orange or completely red.

Light blue fish with blue fins can also occur. The color of females is usually orange-yellow and monophonic, and black dots and spots can be seen through the body. In addition to orange, females can be painted brown with white or dark dots all over their bodies.

Females are slightly smaller than males, whose size is 15 centimeters, but if conditions are favorable, the fish can grow up to 20 centimeters.

Fish prefers to stay in the middle or lower layer of water. Like other tsikhlovye, labeotrofeus ordinary very territorial and aggressive aquarium fish.

It is preferable to have several females and one male in one aquarium. If you plan to keep the fish in the general aquarium, the neighbors for laberotrofeus should be selected with the same habits.

For a group of fish of 3-4 females and one male, you will have to purchase an aquarium of the following dimensions 100 × 40×40 centimeters. Due to the fact that the male can love the entire territory of the aquarium, the sharing of another weaker male can be fatal for the latter and the stronger male will simply kill him.

The aquarium should contain stone caves and grottoes, weaves and other similar decorations.

As aquarium soil, you can use sand of different fractions. Light in aqua should be moderate.

From aquarium plants it is better to use grass with hard leaves and a strong root system. For the role of a green ornament for a cichlid, echinodorus, gedelite bolbitis, valisneria, nymphea are suitable.

When you plant the plant in the ground, it is necessary to lay stones around the rhizome so that the cichlids do not dig them out of the substrate.

Parameters of aquarium water should be as follows:

  • Stiffness: 10 – 20 dH;
  • Temperature: 24 – 27 degrees;
  • Acidity: 7.2 – 8.5 pH

If in the aquarium the water hardness drops to 6 dH, for fish this can be fatal. In addition, in an aquarium with cichlids, water should be filtered and regular changes of ¼ of the water to fresh should be carried out.

More than 50% of the Labeothrofeus diet is vegetable food, everything else is alive and its substitutes.

The fish reaches sexual maturity at the age of 10-12 months. Spawning labeothrofeus in the general aquarium. This type of cichlid can perfectly interbreed with tapir cichlid.

Spawning occurs in a previously prepared depression in the ground or on a flat stone. The process of fertilization of eggs takes place in the female’s mouth.

The spawning process takes some 30-40 minutes, during which the female lays up to 70 eggs.

When spawning is over, a female should be taken from the aquarium and the male switches to the next female ready for spawning. To prevent the male from driving an already inseminated female through the aquarium, she should be transplanted to another aquarium. Fry will begin to leave the female’s mouth 20-25 days after spawning.

While the roe matures (the process takes about 4 weeks), the female does not eat anything at this time. So that other fish in the general aquarium would not drive the exhausted female, it should not be immediately transferred to a common aquas.

Fry need to feed the Artemi cyclops and naupli.
