Kissing gourami in a home aquarium

Hello colleagues. I apologize for the weekly absence, the vacation is over and the harsh work has begun with daily absences at home. Now you have to take minutes to write articles on your favorite blog.

In today’s article we will talk about a labyrinth fish called Gurami kissing.

This aquatic animal is commonly found on the island of Klimantan, Sumatra, Java and Thailand. The fish has a unique ability to survive – it can easily live in muddy puddles, gutters of rice fields, swamps, slow-flowing rivers and artificial reservoirs, where there is dense vegetation.

The fish has a tall and elongated body, flattened at the sides. The mouth of a small fish, but the lips like a noble Negro – thick and bulging. The main body color of the fish is yellowish-silver with dark longitudinal stripes on the sides.

On the gill covers there are vertical dark stripes. The fins can be either greenish or grayish yellow.

In nature, one can also find an albino form of guramka. During the spawning period, the color of the males is brighter.

Under natural conditions, this fish can reach 30 centimeters in length, but in aquariums, their size does not exceed the 20-centimeter mark.

Guramka is considered a peaceful and slightly shy aquarium fish. Cases of aggression occur, but only in relation to other males. Like other members of the labyrinth family (lalius, pearl gourami, marble, moonlight, chocolate), the kissing gurum breathes atmospheric air.

The fish has to periodically rise to the surface and take a breath of air. To keep your pet from catching a cold, cover the aquarium with a cover glass and a lamp.

Thus, you can kill two birds with one stone: there will always be warm air under the glass and the evaporation of water will decrease.

Kissing gourami slow fish, preferring to stay in the upper layers of the aquarium. If the fish are contained in common aqua, then it may remain hungry due to more nimble neighbors.

The best option for this aquatic animal will be a specific aquarium, the volume of which should be at least 100 liters. If the volume is less, the fish can become extremely shy.

In Aqua, it is necessary to organize a dense planting of aquarium plants with a long stem (hornpole, Canadian elodea, ambulia, lyudwigija, limnophila, cabomba), and also place floating plants in aqua (pinch, riccia, azolla, nyad Guadeloupe). Water parameters should be as follows:

  • Active reaction: 6 – 7 pH;
  • Stiffness: 5 – 15 dH;
  • Water temperature: 24 – 28 degrees Celsius.

Kissing gourami can be called sanitation aquarium, as they gladly eat various types of algae, which are torn from the walls of the aquarium and from plants. In addition, the fish do not mind to enjoy the hydra, which destroys in the bud, if you have got one. You can feed the Guramka with live and vegetable food.

Daphnia is preferable from live food, the fish-crawfish often refuses to take it. But be careful with dried daphnia, as it strongly stirs up the water, causing bacterial outbreaks.

Dried cyclop has the same bad property.

Guramka reaches sexual maturity at the age of one and a half. If you acquired a flock of fish, then spawning often occurs in species aqua.

The fact is that in order to get offspring in a separate spawning ground, you have to seed different sexes. The female differs from the male in a fuller belly, but this is not a 100% indicator.

To stimulate spawning in aqua make water changes and increase the temperature of the environment by several degrees. It is also desirable to reduce the hardness of the water in the aquarium.

Spawning, as a rule, occurs in the evening in low light. But there are exceptions to the rules and the fish spawn in the afternoon.

Why is the fish dubbed “Kissing”?

Strangely enough, but the harbinger of spawning is a savory kiss of two rival males who are trying to move each other with their tasty smacks. Fish during kisses can be in this position for a long time.

During spawning, the male wraps the female in his body and when the male compresses the body, the female at this moment spawns.

The number of eggs that the female can sweep away in one spawning can reach six thousand. The initial color of the caviar is amber, but then it darkens and sticks to the plants or it floats to the surface.

If you kept the producers on a starvation diet, they can eat all the caviar. If spawning proceeded in a common aqua, the eggs should be transferred to another container with a 15-centimeter water level. If the fish spawned in a separate aqua, parents should be removed from it.

Leave in akva with fry weak aeration. A day after spawning, larvae appear from the roe, and after a few more days, the fry can already swim and feed.

Starter feed for fry: ciliates and rotifers, and a week later, vegetable feed can be added to the diet.
